Chapter 1: Aaron Wolfe
“Ugh, what is that vile smell?” Aaron groggily wakens to a strong pungent odor. He attempts to search around for the cause of the smell, but all he sees is complete darkness. After shaking his head and rubbing his eyes, he still cannot see anything. The last thing Aaron remembers doing was inspecting a disturbance earlier. Aaron attempts to stand up and falls over in pain. He stumbles around in the dark, searching for any form of light. Suddenly he feels his feet brush up against something. “Great, I must be surrounded by rats” he thinks to himself. He kicks his feet at the object, expecting to hear squeaks, but the object is silent. Frantically he searches his pockets and stumbles upon his phone. A feeling of relief comes over Aaron; he had forgotten all about his phone with everything going on.
He turns on his flashlight; a look of shock comes over his face. On the ground scattered everywhere are body parts and puddles of blood. It looks like a bomb just went off, but there were no burn marks at all. Throughout his years of being an investigator he had never come across a crime scene like this before. He has investigated and caught many serial killers, but the bodies were never this mutilated.
Using his phone, he scans the area to see where exactly he is. On the street there are several parked cars on the block. On his left lies a convenience store with broken windows. Shards of glass cover the street. Strangely, none of the cars were damaged at all. Aaron looks around the perimeters further to see if he could block the crime scene by any chance. Unfortunately, there are no signs of alleys or even dumpsters on the street. He soon gives up and his instinct kicks into search for any possible survivors.
Aaron moves slowly over the glass making sure he doesn’t get cut. The smell of death gets stronger as he searches for any signs of life. He feels the need to hold his breath. The stench is so bad he could throw up. He takes a deep breath and thinks to himself, “Just relax, I have been to several crime scenes and haven’t thrown up yet. I must continue searching for survivors and figure out what caused this.” He keeps on walking, moving the flashlight back and forth, but still he finds no sign of life just more scattered bodies around. No one was spared; he could see pieces of men, women, and children. He holds back a tear, saddened by seeing the bodies of children. “They are so young and innocent. What could they have possibly done to deserve this?” he says to himself. “Does innocence mean anything to you? Why not spare them?” he yells out loud. Sometimes even serial killers have been known to spare people’s lives. They each have a separate modus operandi and choose certain victims. Some killers target only women, while others target runaway kids. This killer was organized; he cannot see any footprints, or anything left behind from the killer.
Aaron decides he should take about another twenty minutes or so to search for survivors before going back to his car to report the crime. Sadly, he finds no sign of life anywhere in the town. He picks up his phone and calls his partner. All he can hear are tones. He chuckles to himself, “Figures. I’m out here all alone and my phone has no reception.” He immediately turns the phone off then back on, to see if that works. Still no reception. He lets out a sigh and begins to walk toward his car. Once Aaron gets closer to his car, he presses the remote to unlock the doors of his Mustang and nothing happens. Can this day get any worse? he thinks to himself. He unlocks the doors manually and gets inside and inserts the key into the ignition, turns the key to fire up the engine and nothing happens. With another sigh, he gets out of his car and begins the long walk outside of Llyn.
After an hour or so he reaches Llyn’s border. On the other side of Llyn, the mood changes instantly. Aaron squints his eyes as bright light rushes into his eyes. Hills can be seen in the distance as his vision improves. Birds fly over him and land on a patch of trees nearby. It’s comforting to hear birds chirp after what he has just witnessed. A beep wakes him up from is dream state. Aaron grabs his phone and checks his messages. No new messages, but at least his phone works now. He decides to call his partner Jaclyn Hunsaker, the only person he could really trust.
Jaclyn says, “Hello”.
“Hey Jaclyn, can you do me favor?”
“Is everything okay?” she asks.
“Yes, my car will not start, I am just outside of Llyn.”
“Okay Aaron, you owe me one,” she says with a smirk. After the call, he looks at his watch. It’s 7am. Wow, where did the time go? he thinks to himself.
