Time and time again she was outshined. Her father was the crowned victor of District One years past and her brother was the star pupil in her training facility. Time and Time again she was ignored. Her mother practically denouncing her the moment her dream of becoming a victor spouted from her mind to her lips. Mave's mother already knew though. She knew the day was fast approaching; the day Maverick would leave the nest and flutter towards the battlefield, daggers in hand. That day is today.

It was time for a change.

She wanted to prove to her peers, that Maverick Sai Masonn was stronger than the rest, better than the rest, smarter than the rest. The girls of the district knew of her determination, and used it to their advantage; knowing she would definitely volunteer. They put their names in and rested well knowing that they were safe. So seventeen year old Maverick became their saviour. Their metaphorical Jesus; saving their sorry butts from unavoidable death. But Mave was no one's sacrificial lamb. She was going to come back. And she was going to come back to her family a victor.
