Aurelius_93 | 3 comments Hello , I’m just curious how other people read as I find it fascinating how people can read with such speed and comprehension.

How I read :

1. Read every single word from left to right and then move onto the next line and repeat this ...

2. While going across the sentence I am saying each word in my head.

3. I use a pen as a pointer and start and the beginning of the line and move until I reach the last word of the line.

4. I set a target to read so many chapters by a certain time in one sitting.

Other queries

A. If your reading a book and it’s late at night and your super interested in what your reading , and your coming to the end of the book but you are starting to fall asleep , do you close the book and carry on tomorrow or do you have some kind of routine where you have a cup of coffee or go and rinse your face with cold water just so you can finish that book?

Is what I’m doing (above) ok or should I try and change a few things

I Just wanted to know if anyone had any tips for helping with the above

Thanks , Jason

That's a very interesting topic. Although I don't have the perfect answer to your question I'll just post my opinion and how I do read for comprehension.

1. Same as you
2. I do speak out most of the words that I'm reading. This works better for me because I don't drift off as much and through saying and hearing the words I process them better. Therefore my comprehension has improved by this method.
3. I follow the words with my finger.
4. I take some short time to rethink the content in my own words after I finished a chapter. Maybe even write some important passages on paper.
5. Most of the time I read just before bed and set myself a target of 2 chapters without any given time. It shouldn't feel like it has to be that amount of pages in that given time.

While my method is good for comprehension, it is slow. I'm definitely up for some tips to improve my speed. But what is important to me is that I understood what I read. How fast I read the book is only secondary.

A. When that happens I close the book. If I'm tired I start to read faster because I set myself this chapter or this book and then I go to sleep. Therefore my speed is high but the comprehension suffers.
The cold water maybe helps for some short time. And I wouldn't recommend the coffee if you want to go to sleep afterwards.

Your method is definitely okay because I don't think there are methods that are extremely good or bad. Afterall you have to decide if your method works for you. You have to decide if there is a need for change in your routine.
If you think your comprehension isn't good enough, maybe try some tips from my reading routine.

Hope this helps somebody or gives some new insights. I'm also looking forwards to read some other answers.

Best regards
Timo
