I'm sorry, Nick. The MPE for this title is 474 pages and doesn't work for Power of 9. It will work for 10.2 Scrabble. I don't see combos, but you might have more insight having read it. (less)

This is O.K. with me. But I have a question.
The paperback I read has 472 pp.
The only edition I see with 474 pp is a hardback.
What are you referring to when you say the MPE has 474?

Thanks,

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments The first question/answer below doesn't really apply here, but it refers to MPE so I have included it. And, as a note, I always use the Other Editions link when looking to get page count for our challenges.

From our FAQs:

Different editions of books have widely different number of pages, and ebooks and audiobooks may not have pages at all. How do you determine page count for the 100 page minimum and for awarding Jumbo points?
In the interest of fairness, members that read the same book should receive the same amount of jumbo style points, no matter which edition is used. We will use the most popular English-language print edition (MPE) to determine page count.
For poetry collections, we will use the number of pages of the edition read. For ebooks without a print edition, the word-count of the text must be at least 30,000 words. For audio books without a print edition, the audio book must be at least 3 hours long.

How is the "most popular edition" determined
The Most Popular Edition (MPE) is the first book that comes up when you search for the title. Alternately, you can click on the "Other Editions" link on the book cover and sort by number of ratings. Make sure that the most popular edition is an English language print edition; not an ebook, audiobook, or large print edition.

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1722 comments I am going to post an abridged edition of The Count of Monte Cristo and I am going to try to explain my reasoning for claiming styles.

The edition I read seems to be an earlier printing of this edition Bantan abridged edition It was published by Bantam Pathfinder and translated and abridged by Lowell Bair, originally published in 1956.

BPL does list an abridged edition as assignment here They don't list the translator or who abridged it.

But the edition listed on Goodreads has a Lexile score of 930
Lexile

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments Don't worry about the abridgement. At RwS everyone gets the same page count. The only restriction for styles is YA (and this doesn't fall into that category) or when the task has restrictions (like Short Works this season).

Bryony (bryony46) | 247 comments I remember quite a lot of Agatha Christie’s books have a lexile below 800. I’ve just read Cards on the Table and wanted to check if we only need to look up the lexile if the book is shelved as JUV etc at BPL? I can only see it shelved as FIC at BPL so wanted to check this before posting the task. Thank you.

You're good with that one Bryony. It was on the list with a low Lexile, but I've checked it for you just now and they are no longer using it in classrooms apparently.

Owlette | 715 comments I'm not sure where to post this question, but here goes: on the Group Reads list, the count is for not-a-novel books, isn't it? For me, 2/6 were not novels: post 304 Building Big and post 581 Leap of Faith: Memoirs of an Unexpected Life. I don't know why they aren't tallied on the Readerboard.

We will research this and get back to you.

Owlette | 715 comments Thank you!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments I'm not sure whether you know this or not, but because RwS has such a complex scoring system, 10 years ago we started using a database. It has made things much easier on your scorekeepers! Unfortunately, your situation is one that falls through the cracks.

Your two not a novel claims don't show up for technical reasons. Because the 30.1 Go for the Green task isn't required for an RwS finish or a Mega finish, those claims don't get counted toward your 5-book total for the Group Reads calculation. When you claim another book for one of the 10-point or 20-point tasks, your book count will be 5 and your not a novel styles will feed to the database query.

Owlette | 715 comments Okay, I think I sort of understand. :)

You made me go back to the history of the development! I should add that I think both of your not a novel claims will show up, but I'm not 100% certain of that. In any case, we will watch the Readerboard, and I expect you'll be among those offered the opportunity to select a group reads for next season.

Valerie Brown | 3270 comments I think Kate made a typo on the Readerboard. I am pretty sure I should be at 1530, not 1430.

Kate has found the error and it will be corrected next Readerboard update.
