Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments Who like Draco? Who hates him? Is he misunderstood? What are your thoughts?

message 2: by Shen Binghe (new)

Shen Binghe At first, when I was reading Harry Potter for the first time. I will have to admit that I hated him, but when I reread it several times, I liked him. I feel that he is misunderstood because he had to deal with the pressure of his parents and his peers. Now, he's my third favorite character dispite everyone saying bad things about him.

message 3: by Rory Gilmore (new)

Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments I totally agree!!! I haven’t read all the books yet but by the movies I use to have him but not I love him!!!

message 4: by Josue (new)

Josue Sirius Black also had pressure from his family. His whole family were proud pure blood wizards who sympathized with Lord Voldemort. He chose to be a decent human being and stood up to his family about his beliefs to the point where he was disowned by his family and even removed from family photos. He chose to do the right thing and to not judge others simply by their blood status. I think this is very much relevant in today's world. With all the issues we have right now I think the world today can learn from Sirius black in that regard. So please don't make excuses for Draco. It is never easy to go against your family, but in life one has to do the right thing and no the easy thing.

Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments I get what your saying but it’s irrelevant to the topic

message 6: by Josue (new)

Josue How so? someone above commented that he is misunderstood because he had to deal with the pressure of his parents. I commented that having the pressure of your family does not justify the choices you make, and used Sirius Black as an example.

Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments Ohhh, that’s make sense! I guess it was how it was worded

message 8: by Lacey (new)

Lacey | 22 comments I don’t love Draco but I do believe that he faced a lot of pressure and influences to become who he was specially before book 6 meaning that I don’t completely hate him either. For me, he’s very difficult to like and possibly sympathise with before The Half Blood Prince, this is simply because he is a bully and has no qualities that I particularly like although Harry at the very beginning of their encounters didn’t help but the culture clash from both sides plays a big factor there. However, by the end of book 6, it is easy to see why people like him. I just don’t know that his action to save Harry from the wrath of Voldemort in book 7 was out of bravery/defiance, or if it was simply cowardice bearing in mind that he feared Voldemort long before this point.

message 9: by Gaby (new)

Gaby (gabyglow) | 5 comments I think he was raised to think that he was superior because of his blood status and money so he was broken and had nobody he could talk to, at least Harry had friends that cared for him,but that does not excuse his behavior and bullying. Harry is more broken than Draco though.

I looked it up.... It's really cool! I'm Malory Weasley, Ginny's twin sister.... I'm pretty sure I got the right one? Either way, it's really cool.

I don't think Draco is misunderstood. I think that's a weak excuse. He :
–bullied Harry
–laughed at Cedric' death
–called Muggle borns quite derogatively by the the name 'mudblood'
–was partly sadistic
–joined a sadistic genocidal cult
–was proud of it moreover
–did not mind Hermoine's physical abuse
was whiny

A lot of people mistake his crying-in-the-bathroon scene as trauma because of being forced and misunderstood. That just makes him whiny, not virtuous. He wants to be a cool Death Eater who remorselessly murders, kills Muggles for fun, knows advanced dark magic and tyrannize the weak to make himself feel powerful. That's snivelling cowardice. Sorry, Malfoy fans, he is pathetic. Good that he improved later.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I would like to add: kindly learn to differentiate Tom Felton and Malfoy.

I lost the power of speech for a few minutes.
DRACO IS AMAZING!
And Harry deserved it. No offense, but that guy is a wimp. And extremely stupid. And Cedric was amazing, sure, maybe he shouldn't have, but how is Harry any nicer? He laughed at poor dracos dad being put in azkaban. He totally discriminated against all Slytherins, said that all children of death eaters would obvi become death eaters, because of their parents. He is a class a asshat. And he is the reason that my poor draco cried. I hate him.
NOT MY DRACO YOU BITCH!!!!!
Just, like, random reference there....
And he is not a snivelling coward!!
He was worried because his mum would DIE if he didnt do that, and probably so would his dad!!
He wasnt ready!
Tell me that YOU wouldnt cry if the only way your family would live is if you killed some unkillable guy?
Oh, thats right.
You cant.
Cut draco some slack!

Exactly. And dumb. Painfully dumb.

Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments I sorta get what your saying since I haven’t read HBP yet but so far yea he’s a jerk but I still think he is the best character yet

message 23: by Rory Gilmore (new)

Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments I have read the first five books and I am reading OOP now and I like book Draco so it’s not just the portrayal of movie Draco that I like.

message 24: by Rory Gilmore (new)

Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments The app is prob having a issue and idk why I like book Draco. He’s just idk I like him. I guess I am kinda bias cuz I am a slytherin and know what it’s like to be picked on because you are a slytherin which is part of his problem but he’s nice but not nice at the same time. And I know that he’s not the way he is because if getting picked on but because of his upbringing and influences

message 25: by Rory Gilmore (new)

Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments That probably makes no sense

message 26: by Rory Gilmore (new)

Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments They really are

message 27: by Rory Gilmore (new)

Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments Yes!! Are you a slytherin?

message 28: by elisia_spiering (new)

elisia_spiering Draco made mistakes, just like any other person. He was raised to believe a certain thing, and his main influencers in his life was his parents and both of them had close connections with Death Eaters and Voldemort. While Sirius Black also had this sort of problem, he and Draco just dealt with it in a different way. Sirius choose to refute his destiny due to his rebellious behavior and Draco modeled himself after his father to please him. Draco is not inherently evil, just influenced. And he is extremely devoted to his family, and most of his actions was to protect them. You ask yourself, would you lose your family for this guy at school that you have hated for 5 years? That's why Draco choose to be a Death Eater.

message 29: by g.vee (new)

g.vee (gvesthetic) As for Draco, I believe that was not brave and was jealous. He did everything from bullying to making his father buy things for him just for telling Harry that he believed he was beneath him, but he was just jealous that Harry is the chosen one and gets all the attention etc. Out of cowardice he chose the dark side. He was afraid to tell people his feelings. He was afraid of his father. His mother. Afraid if he will not be able to hold his pure blood reputation.
But he was raised that way. He grew up in fear. If his parents had not taught him to believe and bow down to fear, to be perfect and not to show his feelings, he would have been better. I believe his parents, especially Lucius, did not care about him that much he did about his reputation.
It was not alone his parents fault. He could have been like Sirius, who was brave and daring that he left his own family for the good side. He did not accept the dark side because of his family, but he fought against them and did what HE thought was right, unlike Draco. He was just his father’s puppet. Or he could have been like Regulus. He fought for the dark side, but after realising what it actually was, he changed sides.

I agree. As far as I’m concerned, Draco’s only redeeming quality is that he’s not completely an evil monster. I doubt it was not in his nature to be evil, but nurture.

IMO: Was Draco evil? No. Was he a horrible person for most of the scenes we see in the books? Definitely. Did he deserve redemption arc? Nope.

I completely agree with all of this. A summary: Draco is not a good person and while his parents did influence him, it's not completely them, since like Sirius, Draco did have a choice.

I feel like he can totally be redeemed for all the bad things he has done, but it's easier said than done.

message 33: by Rory Gilmore (new)

Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments So true! I totally think he could have gotten a redemption if he wanted too

message 34: by Luna (new)

Luna (luna13) Blake Malfoy wrote: "So true! I totally think he could have gotten a redemption if he wanted too"

Yeah. He technically did in CC (if you want to consider it canon though). And according to the author, every character in the series is redeemable, except Voldemort ofc, but I really can't see how Umbridge could be redeemed?

message 35: by Rory Gilmore (new)

Rory Gilmore (artemis1) | 120 comments I think Voldemort could and umbridge couldn’t
