Shomeret | 1490 comments 4)Death in Delft by Graham Brack (historical mystery) Source: Purchased on Amazon Started: 8/14 Finished: 8/16

Why Read: We were reading it on this group, and I'm interested in 17th century Holland especially with Vermeer as a character in the book.

Comments: Doing sketches for a murder investigation is a good role for an artist as meticulous as Vermeer. I laughed when his wife complained that he needed to whitewash the parlor walls. That's the wrong sort of painter. I liked the way the mystery resolved. I gave it a B+

5)The Spiritualist by Noah Alexander (historical mystery) Source: Story Origin Started: 8/16 Finished: 8/16

Why Read: This was on a page of review copies on Story Origin. I was interested in a woman investigating a purported paranormal situation though I suspected it wouldn't really be paranormal.

Comments: This takes place in 19th century India and there's interesting cultural content. The detective uses a handbook written by the head of the Bombay Detective Agency where she works. She isn't supposed to be a detective. She's the secretary, but she gets her boss to give her a case. To his amazement she solves the case. I gave it a B. 6)Side Chick Nation by Aya de Leon (Puerto Rico contemporary fiction) 375 pages. Source: Library Started: 8/17 Finished: 8/19

Why Read: This deals with Hurricane Maria and its aftermath. The MC is Dulce who is a character in Uptown Thief. I loved Marisol, the MC of that book. She also plays a role in this book.

Comments: This is a powerful novel and I learned a great deal about Puerto Rico. I gave it an A. See my review at https://shomeretmasked.blogspot.com/2...

Ann (annrumsey) | 16933 comments Shomeret: Yes, Death in Delft was rather delightful for including Vermeer and the doctor with the microscope, Van Leeuwenhoek. I like to read books that include details of hurricanes, and am interested in Puerto Rico so Side Chick Nation has jumped onto my tbr. Thanks!
