bamaace83 | 965 comments Thanks for helping me. 4 pages too short for The Silent Wife. That stinks. I'll have to go back and figure out all the character names to add those in. Okay, I did the first step. What should I do next?

Tammie | 4553 comments I feel your pain...my last book was 300 pgs...1 pg shy of 4 more ingredients!

checking now...

Tammie | 4553 comments For the Alchemist you won't be able to do scavenger with only 2 possible ingredients...so that will have to be a spellout. Unless you can spellout a menu item, let's leave the spellout until we have more books.

Lots of choices for the other...
Silent wife...Salad and apple can be added to the fruit salad I've already started...that's 2 of the 8...

Maybe start a curry with some of the other ingredients...we'll need spices to go in there...we could put my lobster in with it for the meat...tater-tots, corn, will doritos work in a curry?

Curry definition: a dish of meat, vegetables, etc., cooked in an Indian-style sauce of strong spices and typically served with rice.

The curry needs at least 5 things...so leave blanks for what needs to be filled in...

bamaace83 | 965 comments Cool, let me go add those two for Silent. Yeah, Alchemist gave really good points and was super short for Turf Wars so I knocked that out for those. It was a toss up if it would work over here or not.

I'll check it out from the library via kindle and see if I can find some spices or potatoes...I'm thinking there was at least one potato in that book...hehe

message 106: by Tammie (last edited Sep 20, 2020 03:00PM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments no potato but...here's a few more for The Alchemist...so you should be able to use for scavenger

Spices pg 106 - put in curry
Tea pg 36, 37 - can use to make tea
meat pg 9 - put in curry
water pg 1, 6 - use for tea
oil pg 32
vegetables pg 39

bamaace83 | 965 comments Thanks so much. I think I'm going to use the flag feature on libby so I can flag when a word appears in a book. I think that will work better for the ones that aren't audio books. Let me go add those things.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Here's my Read It and Eat shelf and I added it to the Members tab: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I think I have no idea what I am doing now that I started. LOL I see you girls saying you were short pages so maybe my book is too short? It's 180 pages and I put it on the SS with all the food/drink words in my book (still working on adding any) and I have EGGS if you still need it.

Questions:
1. If "honey" is used in my book as a term of endearment, may that still be used?
2. If we find a food/drink such as coffee and it's on a lot of pages, is there any reason to add all of those pages or just one or two?

Go to the meals and points tab...you’ll see the breakdown for scavenger words...@301 we jump to 8 words vs 4 with 300, etc...this tab’s content really helped me understand the challenges

Honey ...yes we could use that...with tea perhaps
I’ve had the same thing with coffee and tea... I noted 2 or three and left it at that

Tammie | 4553 comments Shannon wrote: "is baked ziti considered pasta or are they talking about the actual word pasta"

Yes, baked ziti could be one of the 3 required ingredients for the scavenger method...awesome find!

Tammie | 4553 comments We could probably use a couple of 'vinegar' words if anyone can find them for the 'bonus' fish 'n chips.

I started this menu item knowing I have a book that I will read that will have vinegar...but if anyone finds, just fill it in and we can start another.

message 115: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I’ve got two books going right now and I’ll keep an eye/ear out for vinegar. One is audio and I’m going to have to find the words. The other is Libby and I’ve been bookmarking. In that one I’ve already found flour, sugar, eggs, lemon and a few other things. It could come in handy but it’s not over 500 pages. I’m definitely going to find a 500 page book to knock out this week for some alcohol words.

I hear you...I've got a few I know coming up that will have alcohol. I think once we get going it's not to difficult. The SS does a good job of showing items we haven't used yet...awesome feature.

Tammie | 4553 comments A clarification for Fish'nChips

◈ fish and chips (fish, or any types of fish, potato or chips, salt, lemon) Must contain all these items (4), add vinegar for bonus points

For our meal #5 we had recorded chips and potatoes. We can use one or the other...so I deleted the potatoes and slid in the option for vinegar (bonus). Hope this makes sense.

I am currently reading Save Me the Plums: My Gourmet Memoir - it has all words fish, chips, vinegar and lemon

If you have choices...Opt for something frozen...those items can be carried over to the next round

message 123: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments Cool, I made a curry and just need one ingredient but I have that in the book that I'm reading right now. I took spices from Alchemist. I have 4 ingredients to go towards a quiche also.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Can we use the same word more than once using the same book as long as the word is used more than once in that book?

Also, I have mostly been either going for FROZEN food or whichever one can give us most points if eaten. Is there a strategy we're using for that, or should I just put my meals wherever and the captains will move them? And where is the spellout tab? Under what circumstances is it better to use the SO?

message 126: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Another question, I am reading a 338 page book but when I put it in on the SS it said I can do 10 words when I thought the MAX for that page count is only 8. Is 10 accurate or is there an error?

It should only be 8

I'm using SIO when there are a lot of characters and/or there are very few food/drink items mentioned in the book. FROZEN is better as we can use them from month to month.

message 129: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments Same word can be used multiple times just as you described...just note the different page numbers.

Not sure we have much of a strategy at this point...still getting our arms around this. If we complete our 80 books and still have time, we may do a combination of things like...
Adding more ingredients to make our meals tastier or swapping out longer books.

Right now we’re at a pace that will have us finishing about 4-6 days early...that’s ok as the next rounds are longer so good to know we can handle it...but it might be good to have more longer books. I say might..let’s see where we are at half way point and we can adjust then if needed. For now, just read what you love.

As far as spell out...there are going to be books that just don’t have ingredients for words in them...that where spell out comes in.

Also there are min and maximums for meal types we’ll need to pay attn to this..ideal is probably to make more frozen as that meal appeals to a wider range of customers

message 130: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments Cool, thanks for explaining all that better. I have one more book to add now and I'll finish another one tonight. Quick question on page numbers considering I'm in so many different things. Page number of the edition that we read or first edition that pops up? I haven't ran into this issue yet but it's going to happen with a book later this week.

message 131: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I posted one of my books and the other I'm going back to find words. The only problem is, my husband usually works overtime during the week but with everything going on in Louisville, he's home this week at night. This is good and bad. He's safer at home at night but bad because I'm supposed to "socialize", ummm does he not know I need my reading and beverage time after work. Anyway, I'm super glad that I only have one book that I need to finish by tomorrow night and it's on audio and I can do both. I'll get the other book added tomorrow, probably with the book I'll finish.

message 132: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments You should record the page numbers for the version you read

There is an exception to this...if you read via audio you record the page number for the default version...the first book on the list of versions

No problem...I think our rounds are 4 weeks long so we’re no where close to crunch time. ;)

Shannon O'Flynn | 630 comments Im over half way done the book I'm reading and I've literally only found one food word which is pumpkin (pretty sure that's not helpful anyways haha). Not to mention its a 400 page book :/

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Hopefully there are a lot of characters and good SIO options!!

message 136: by Shannon (new)

Shannon O'Flynn | 630 comments Im definitely hoping. Theres been 13 characters so far so thats not bad!

message 137: by Shannon (new)

Shannon O'Flynn | 630 comments Ok I'm up to about 6 food words now but im pretty sure most aren't helpful. Only 100 pages to go so unless I find more ill probably just do SIO's

message 138: by Tammie (last edited Sep 24, 2020 10:59AM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments Looks like everyone is getting the hang of this. We are at one week and are done with 1/3+ of our books. I'll suggest that we focus on longer books for the next couple of weeks if that's something you enjoy.
If you come across a 'spice' in your reading, please add it to a curry recipe or save it to add to a curry recipe someone else creates.

message 139: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I have two littles to finish by Friday night and I’ll definitely find some bigger books. I’m going to have to go back and find the words in a few so I’ll get everything updated this weekend. My work is kinda crazy due to the protesting in Louisville so we are working different hours and it’s messing up my rhythm.

message 140: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I'll just focus on posting my bigger books (301+ page books) so we get 4, 8 or 12 items. If we run short I can go back and post some smaller books.

message 141: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Oops, I meant 8 or 12 items books of 301+ pages

message 142: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Maybe I'll just post completions here for the smaller ones in case we do need them later, and I have a place to record any food items or SIO characters we might need.

message 143: by Tammie (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments If our rounds are four weeks, we can update everything we need to this weekend, right?

bamaace83 | 965 comments Anybody have a suggestion for a good book over 500 pages? I'm striking out over here. I have some solid 400 plus page books that I can knock out but that 500 is being tricky.

message 148: by Tammie (last edited Sep 26, 2020 06:46AM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments Not sure if you would like any of these or not:
Marianna Zapata and Kristen Ashley books tend to be longer...their style drones on a bit, but overall I've enjoyed these authors.
My all time fav or Zapata is The Wall of Winnipeg and Me and Ashley The Gamble
Cake
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - a classic I read for book club that turned out to be wonderful (so many of them aren't)
The Chestnut Man - thriller (which I don't like, but liked this one)
Lilac Girls - interestingly good
A couple of NR standalones that are really good--The Collector The Liar The Obsession
Anything J.R. Ward, Kristen Cashore I could recommend

What I've got on my list to read that's over 500:
I've just started All the Light We Cannot See -- liking to so far...it's a best seller which practically everyone else in the world has read, but for whatever reason I'm just getting around to it :)
I'm also going to read the 5th Twilight book...most of those are over 500 Midnight Sun (might be awhile for me as their is a long waiting list at my library)
City of Bones has been on my tbr forever as well...I may try that one...I think most of the books in this series have versions over 500.

I'd love any recs as well.

Tammie | 4553 comments *****Just a quick not on books that are shorter/4 pointers*****

If you aren't a heavy reader and don't like longer books, please don't shy away from adding your book to the SS just because a couple of us are holding back. We're doing purely for strategy. Read what you love!

message 150: by Shannon (new)

Shannon O'Flynn | 630 comments For the BOM is the rule still the same. That you can read it and count it as long as its within a month of the end date?
