I think so Shannon...I checked the QnA and it doesn't say specifically so we should probably ask.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Jenny, I was going over the rules and I was looking to see if I could add anything to the meals, and I noticed that meal #14, Fish and Chips, needs lemon in place of pepper (or added to it?)

◈ fish and chips (fish, or any types of fish, potato, salt, lemon) Note for scavenger hunt only: Must contain all these items (4), add vinegar for bonus points.

message 155: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Eek! Okay, let's take out pepper and find lemon. Good catch Vicki!

message 156: by Tammie (last edited Sep 26, 2020 05:28PM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments Ditto...Nice catch Vicki...if anyone sees an opportunity to switch things around because of need, please do feel free to do so. The SS will tell us if something hasn't been used...it's pretty easy.

I asked the question about if it there was an advantage to adding an ingredient beyond the minimum to make a dish tastier...the reply indicated that for this round it wasn't necessary...hinting that next round it may be.

Also, if we get to the end and want to add an ingredient, we just need to indicate the proper menu item...no need to insert.

So for now...let's continue with trying to stick with our minimums and reading as lengthy of books we love to read. I hope everyone is enjoying the challenge!

If you prefer someone complete your menu items, just let us know and someone will work at it for you :)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments No problem, ladies. :)

Tammie, I am 100% enjoying this one! It's different and whoever set it up has done an amazing job organizing it and making it "user" (Vicki) friendly. lol

bamaace83 | 965 comments Y'all definitely need to read the City of Bones series. Playing catchup over here. It's one of my all time favorite series. It's been so long since I've read Clockwork Angel but that's another really good series. An Ashley book that I liked was Sweet Dreams. A couple random ones are The Time Traveler's Wife and The Book Thief. Y'all all should read the BOM. The Clare one. It's really good. I'm going to fix my menu items right now with the books I've finished the last couple of days.

message 159: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I've started updating it but I'll finish it later this afternoon. I plan on spending some quality time updating everything tonight. I have lemon in one of my books. I did get the longest one posted. I read it on kindle so my page numbers are weird but it seemed like all they did was talk about food in that book.

Tammie | 4553 comments Question on Chain of Gold...not sure if anyone is familiar

I have not read this author...the precis says it's a Shadowhunters novel. Am I going to be stepping in the middle of a story if I read this and potentially not understand? This author looks pretty popular. It's such a long book...I could use some advise/perspective on reading this.

message 161: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments You can read this book without reading the other series. They may mention a couple people from other books but this is a series on its own. The different series are different generations of the same family. I’ve read almost all of them and really enjoy them. I realized I missed a book so I’m going to read that one this week. I need to update goodreads because one of the series I read before I was on goodreads.

I won't start it until maybe next week. I'm going to do audio as well, but have put a reserve in for the kindle version...I can try and hunt for some based on our grocery list to see...will start a list on the SS...may work on it tomorrow during a boring meeting :)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I don't know how far you are into the story.....I know there are some alcohol references. I have the hardback copy. I'll see if I can find some time to skim a few parts and see if anything triggers. I can see if I can get a kindle version also.

SHOP FRONT Update

We have reached our minimums on several meal preps...
Sandwiches
Salad
All drinks except Tea
Dessert

As we progress through this round, if you have choices, please check to see what meals are needed

Also...the meal item numbers in the KITCHEN and STORE FRONT need to line up. So as your finish any menu item...jump over to the store front and record that item and give it a fun name...using the titles of the books to create the item was hinted at in the example given by our mods :) If someone has time to go and make our menu items more 'cleaverly' named that would be great.

Doing well given we are still at under 2 weeks :)

bamaace83 | 965 comments Cool, I'll probably snatch that tomorrow when I have time to update this one. I think I have all the other ingredients to make the fancier fish and chips. I was trying to get all the little weekly challenges updated. Work was crazy and I think I'm going to bed early tonight.

Tammie | 4553 comments Hey everyone! How's your reading coming along...any super fabulous reads to share with everyone??

I finished All the Light We Cannot See last week...I'm sure most of you are saying...I read that book years ago! It had been on my tbr forever...anyway I loved it and highly recommend if you haven't read to do so. Looking through my tbr to see what other fabulous longer books I can find...

I just started a couple of challenges that are going to have me reading many shorter books. Will have them in the wings as needed.

We've just hit week 2 and have 23 more books to read. So we're in great shape.
-We want to be sure every single book possible is used in our recipes. If we run out of places to put ingredients, we can just add more ingredients to our existing recipes.
-We also may want to trade out some longer books if we have them...next week we'll see where we are, and if needed we can free up a few spaces...so read on!

After next week we'll discuss how we want to revise our strategy for the next round, so start thinking about what might work better...

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments I have several "vinegar" words I've been hanging on to, Anna.

Is there a plan for anything right now? Is there a reason you're reading longer books in particular, Jenny? I know we get more words for scavenger of spell-out but would two 250 page books, for example, be as good as a 500 page one? I've mostly been reading shorter due to Turf Wars. LOL Coordinating these challenges is sometimes next to impossible.

I read a few books yesterday and today that I need to add. If I am not mistaken, we have until October 17 before the end of Round 1. Correct?

message 181: by bamaace83 (last edited Oct 03, 2020 01:52PM) (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I really liked The Hate U Give and Ugly Love. Both had been on my TBR and I finally was able to get to them. Totally different books but both had me deeply invested. I've got a couple over 500 books still planning to read to help with the alcohol and dessert. I also have a couple 200 page books hanging out in case we need them but I'll get all my menu items updated tomorrow afternoon. Right now, I'm multi-tasking while watching the Bama game but we are going to friends house tonight to play some board games and snack so my reading time will be limited until tomorrow. I just added that book from the library Tammie so hopefully I can get it read next week too. I'll make it fit somewhere.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments I'm not sure why we want/need alcohol if the points if eaten are only 20 points. Am I missing something? (It wouldn't surprise me! lol)

Re POINTS:
10 points per book read
2 points per scavenger word / spell-it-out letter used per book (maximum numbers shown below)...so the longer the book, the more scavenger and spellouts we get.
Since we are maxed out at 80 books for every team...the likely best way to do 'best' is to read longer books.

This is a challenge, however we should all read what we love. Like you, most of us are participating in multiple challenges...so we're going to have shorter books. It's just a strategy to make room for the longest books. We'll figure it out either way...

The next round starts on October 17...I'd like to suggest we finish by late on the 15th just to allow for final SS work...especially for this 1st round. We can find the clock and post a countdown when we get closer.

hehe...I don't know that any of us will completely understand this game until we get through the 1st set of customers...bottomline on alcohol...is that some of our customers will likely want it...I think it can be carried over to other rounds too. Not sure.

bamaace83 | 965 comments I made some meals but need suggestions on whether to make sandwhich, quiches, or salads. I'm not sure what I should make with some of my ingredients but it looks like I have some good options left in my ingredients. Also, I went ahead and added the two long books to the spreadsheet that I'm tackling the next couple of days. I'm hoping they have good choices for desserts and drinks.

Suggestions:
1. Change your Fish 'n chips w/ Vinegar to just Fish 'n Chips. We have the max for the vinegar option already made with line 166 needing vinegar to finish the last one. I believe there's vinegar somewhere someone can just fill in.
2. I would just make whatever...if you move your finished to the menu, you'll be able to see what's left in the STORE FRONT. We've met all of our minimums except Tea...so if you want to make some tea, that would be great...tea requires water...you could add lemon or sugar if you want to make it tastier :)
3. We can carry over anything frozen to the next round, so if you have choices, make or start a frozen entree. Feel free to use anything I have available to fill it as well.

message 189: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments Thanks! Let me figure out how to move those finished ones over and I'll make that change. I know that I have stuff to make tea. I can make some frozen things.

message 190: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Having no notifications kinda sucks...

I'm only counting my longer books, but still plan on posting shorter books here if needed. We were reading way too fast to count everyone's books with our 80 book cap which is why I was only posting the longer books in the SS with the scavenger items I found. But like Tammie said, everyone should be reading what they like, and it should be a fun challenge, so if you like shorter books read them and use those books!!

message 191: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I made a couple frozen meals but I also made a couple meals that could be for kids. I have no idea how many children we will have to serve but wanted to make sure we had a couple more options for them. I made tea also. I still have lots of ingredients left in some of my books to make a few more things. I'll come back again and check things out. I plan on using my big books for drinks and desserts when I finish them so that we have some more of those options. Off to work on something else. I agree no notifications is making this hard!

message 192: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I'm not sure those min/max numbers on the STORE FRONT relate to the min/max items we can have for each type of item. They are the same min/max numbers we have to follow when creating the item. I don't think they (the Mods) care if we have 20 teas, no milks, and 30 cookies. They just want to make sure we use a good amount of ingredients for each item on the menu.

I think maybe we should ask in Q&A or look in Q&A if that's already been answered.

I think we need more desserts (the kids, teenager and adults all like them). And we can only get desserts, alcoholic drinks and non-alcoholic drinks when we have a BIG BOOK and get the ALL category.

message 193: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Any DDC items we have (non-alcoholic drinks, alcoholic drinks and desserts) are all frozen and can be used in the next month if they aren't eaten.

And I really don't think there's a maximum on the number of meals we can create, just the number of ingredients needed for each item. I've asked in Q&A to make sure.

message 194: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I'm going to take some time tomorrow while listening to audio books to try and go through our book tab and cross out the items we've used from each of the books we've listed, and also move up books that somehow were placed at the bottom of the SS for Round 1. Right now, looks like we have spots for 12 more books from now until the 19th. Once we finish all our books, and have all our menu items and shop front ready, we'll be good to go.

Depending on the answer to my question regarding min/max menu items on the STORE FRONT, we can decide if we'd like more dessert, more salads, more whatever. The good thing is all the FROZEN and DDC items carry over from month to month, so if we want to "stock" items up that is where we should do it.

We can get lots of desserts and DDC drinks when we have the ALL category, so hopefully we are using our big books for more of those items. We can't get desserts from FRESH or FROZEN books is my understanding.

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Do you think we need bread (or toast or sandwich) in our sandwiches, or some sort of green in our salad? I was checking our ingredients and for the most part we do, but for some we don't. Are those sandwiches for our carb conscious guests, so they're served without bread? I think we could sell it that way.

Also, not all "salads" have greens so I think we just need to be ready to sell any non-conventional "recipes" we've made to the judges.

I think we should try, but the instructions only call for specific recipes on fishinchips and tea. I did ask and they replied that we can add an item to a recipe without inserting it next to the recipe...just need to note the correct menu item number.

Did you notice our SS problems? Something is messed up getting our results to the main SS. I saw the mods comments about a few other SS issues, so I’m hoping they’ll figure out what’s wrong.
