Tammie | 4553 comments I can't think of a change Shannon...looks great!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Looks like we're ranked 4th at this point. I think there is still the review that needs to happen...not sure how that effects things.
Note: Not all of the teams have waited on their customers.

Gap between us and 1st is almost 2000 points...so the 1st place team knocked it out of the park. Likely longer books, more fresh meals.

Still...nice work ALL!

bamaace83 | 965 comments I was nosy....I went to see who was on the 1st place team....yep.....they read all the books...all the time. I'm on some teams with them in other things and some of them are pretty amazing competitors. To go off that, I love this team and I think we are majorly kicking butt. I also love seeing where our creativity takes us because we seem to all go in different directions which is pretty cool. I really like this challenge and have never done one like this before. It has really kept me on my toes. Now, we just need to figure out a way to derail Team 1's train or knock them off their flying brooms....

bamaace83 | 965 comments Finding the words that can give us bonus points next round could be helpful also. It looks like I'm on the hunt for books that have healthy nuts as characters that eat avocados, legumes, and what the heck is an ube?!?

Tammie | 4553 comments hehe...I agree some of the food names are crazy

ube -> https://www.realsimple.com/food-recip...

message 306: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments If we find an 'ube' we could do an 'ube' buddy read ! Have a 'house ube specialty' :)

message 307: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments A couple of 'word' search tips

Only track desserts and 'other drinks' if you are reading a book over 500 pages. Exception is coffee or tea.

If I'm reading with kindle, I look up all the words that are listed on the 'meals and points' tab at one time and then just note the exception or more specific items as I go. Obviously this doesn't work if you are listening and can't get a kindle version.

message 308: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments Hehehe! Ohhh purple sweet potatoes...I think the fancy grocery stores may have those..maybe? I eat almost everything and honestly have never heard of or eaten an ube. I'm all for a house speciality. I'll keep my eyes out for it. That sounds like a good idea on tracking and could save some time. I know this time I had to go back to find the ebook version because I was reading audio and then I'm sure I missed some words. I'll have to remember this for next time.

message 309: by Shannon (new)

Shannon O'Flynn | 630 comments Just to make sure. As long as theres like 1 chapter left to read of the book its ok for the next round... right?? Lol that book was just too good i couldnt put it down. But i stopped before the last chapter lol

yes...that's correct.
You could probably technically finish because the round ended at 4PM but concerned same dates might be confusing...not sure...

bamaace83 | 965 comments I found avocado in the book that I'm reading! Maybe one of those other fancy words will show up also. I'm having to read a book and mute the tv to calm my nerves of this baseball game. Tomorrow at work is going to suck....

Hey the Braves are winning...isn't that your team? No way I could read and watch game 7 ;)
At least you are in it...the Cardinals were terrible this year...had a rough start with Covid problems...

message 313: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments Well.......they were winning. Now it's tied. It's going to be a long night. Yeah, the Cards did have some covid problems. The Braves have some pitching problems our ace popped his achilles at the beginning of the season and we've had to rely on some very young pitchers.

message 314: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments What fancy words are we looking for?

message 315: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments We are looking for these words:

Swinborne Score of 18
Meals with the word "ube", "watermelon", or "legume" in the text or title, or used as a spell-it-out will attract more adults for round 2

message 316: by Tammie (last edited Oct 20, 2020 08:14AM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments Here's the wrap-up for Round 1...the carry overs don't apply to us as we ran out of meals...but some good tips for the next round...we should attempt at least a few spell outs for the words noted in Jenny's post...unless we can find them in text of course.

Round 1 Complete - what to expect for round 2

Thanks cooks, chefs and kitchen hands - you have survived the opening of your restaurant and round 1 customers. Phew!

Frozen Meals from round 1 not consumed
Can be used in round 2. You should copy and paste these from your Shop Front Round 1 to the Shop Front Round 2 tab (Note: column D on the round 2 tab won't populate - don't worry we will fix it up)

Desserts, Drinks and Cocktails from round 1 not consumed
Can be used in round 2 or round 3. You should copy and paste those you want to use in round 2 from your Shop Front Round 1 to the Shop Front Round 2 tab (Note: column D on the round 2 tab won't populate - don't worry we will fix it up)

Fresh Food from round 1 not consumed
Fresh food not used will be rotten unless you received tips from adults to preserve.
The amount of tips you have from round 1 is directly attributable to your Swinbourne Score.

Score Tips
17-20 20% of adults tipped

13-16 10% of adults tipped

6-12 5% of adults tipped

0-5 0 adults tipped

Adults were pretty crumby tippers in round 1, but now your doors are open and you have a Swinbourne Score and media buzz, expect much higher tip rates in round 2!

If you have Fresh food from round 1 you are preserving by using a tip, copy and paste those you want to use in round 2 from your Shop Front Round 1 to the Shop Front Round 2 tab (Note: column D on the round 2 tab won't populate - don't worry we will fix it up)

Swinbourne Score
All teams have received a score which is available on the Status Sheet.

In round 2, enter the word you find (if doing a scavenger hunt) related to your Swinbourne Score in the justification on your kitchen tab ; and then when creating the meal tick the highlighted box (column G)

Books read cap
For round 2, it is 90 books per team

Customers round 2
The exact number of customers won't be known until they arrive, but be sure it will increase for round 2 as your restaurants gain in popularity!!

Favourite customer meals for round 1 - just for fun and team kudos
The Bees Buzz
Pizza in a Bowl
Forbidden Fruit Salad
Possum Curry, done right with sweet potatoes
The Makes You Pucker Tart
Christmas Mystery Curry
Boozy Broccoli Spaghetti with Crunchy Almond Slivers
Salt tea
Salted Lizard meat sandwich
Swamp chicken and veggie sandwich
Homestyle like your grandmother made, this ham and egg quiche is the prefect comfort food to turn you from Moody to Magic
Ba nanana na na na nanana MAKE YOUR BODY SING!!

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments We could spell out UBE and put it in salads and curries.

message 318: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments Jammin Jenny wrote: "We could spell out UBE and put it in salads and curries."

Yes...it would need to be put with salad and curry as the minimum ingredient count is 5...UbeSalad, UbeCurry would both work nicely.

message 319: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments So question about page numbers because every challenge is different and this time it plays a difference and hasn't before. Do we put the page numbers of the edition we read or the edition listed first? It changes my book from being under 500 pages to over 500 pages so just double checking because that adds in the extra words. I'll start to get my books updated maybe tonight or tomorrow night. It's been a long couple of days.

message 320: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I am pretty sure it's the version you're reading, unless it's an audible version or version without a page count, then you use the default edition.

message 321: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments Thanks! I went back and forth between audible and the kindle edition because of work so I'll mark the kindle and then I can use all the alcohol words I found. :)

message 322: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I've added the books that I'm reading and plan on reading this week. I didn't add any of the ones under 300 pages though. I'll just keep those as a back-up if needed.

message 323: by Jammin Jenny (last edited Oct 27, 2020 02:55PM) (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Here are some books I've read but haven't posted - lower page counts - but I can add them later if we need them.

Jenny's Unposted Books

A Fatal Thaw 208 pages read 10/22 (A, F, D, S, K)
Saturday the Rabbi Went Hungry 249 pages, read 10/24 (S, H, K, D, M, L, I, B, G, W)
Carrie 253 pages, read 10/25 (C, S, K, W, M, T, R, H, D, B, N)
Deviant: The Shocking True Story of Ed Gein, the Original "Psycho" 242 pages, read 10/26 (D, S, H)
Inheritance Reversal 232 pages, read 10/27 (I, M, J, A, H, K, B, T, E, W)

Tammie | 4553 comments Hope everyone is find some great books!

We're at 20 books which is a bit behind but I know I'm behind on entering books.

What do you all think about doing a couple of Swinbourne spell outs? I'd prefer we not have to use our longer books for this, but am open to whatever...noting Jenny and Shannon already have indicated spellout as an option for 2 of there's.

Possible spellouts:
ubesalad
ubepasta
ubequiche
watermelon

I'll suggest we look for U's and maybe a couple of Q's...we might be able to make quite a few if we can get the letters right.

message 325: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Yes I think we should do a couple spell outs...

message 326: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I haven't gotten things updated and I also have some books to add. That sounds good to me. I have a few 200-300 page books that I'm binge reading today and tomorrow to help another challenge that would work for that. I still have bigger books going also.

message 327: by Tammie (last edited Oct 24, 2020 09:06AM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments I'd suggest whoever can, just start a spellout...finish what you can and then someone can come along and add to it. Maybe avoid starting a UBEQUICHE unless you have the Q.

*Edit...I found a Q in one of the books I'm gonna read...so I'll start one one on the SS...everyone, if you have a shorter book that you are going to use for spellout, please just fill in. :)

message 328: by Tammie (last edited Nov 04, 2020 07:35AM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments Tammie's Books not on SS
Hot Holiday Nights, Jaci Burton 139 pgs
Driving Home for Christmas, Lexi Timms 222 pgs
I have ingredients noted if we need these.

message 329: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I saw someone post for UBEJAM too in the Q&A thread. I put UBE in one of our curries.

message 330: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Hey guys, I have several books to post too. I’ve been reading and updating for other challenges today, so tomorrow I’ll update this challenge.

message 331: by Tammie (last edited Oct 25, 2020 04:00PM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments Jenny I see your spell out for HAM (quiche). The minimum ingredients for a quiche is 4...so we need a longer word there...SPAM? - Item 5

Also, Tea must have water...easy fix for that one...I think most books have water. - Item 3

message 332: by Tammie (last edited Oct 25, 2020 04:00PM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments Jenny/Shannon...I just noticed that Shannon has 2 books with Jenny's HAM. Scavenger and spellout cannot be combined...need to split that up. - Item 5

message 333: by Shannon (new)

Shannon O'Flynn | 630 comments My bad! I fixed it by removing my ingredients there

message 334: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I put the SIO letters my unposted books will help with just in case we need them.

message 335: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I removed the SIO letters for the frozen pasta. Hopefully we can think of something else to use those letters.

message 336: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I thought I would get this done today but I didn't get to it so I will work on getting my books updated and my meals tomorrow and Tuesday.

message 337: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I'm slowly getting my books updated. I added the ones that I'm working on planning on reading this week/weekend. I will work on getting the words updated for the ones that I've finished and I made some more meals. I've got watermelon coming up in a book this week. I'll have to see if the other words are around.

I've been reading as much as possible but work has still been busy...I'm grateful for audio :)

message 341: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments I still need to get my books added. I’m sorry guys, but I’ve been super busy and I keep having issues with my computer. Ugh...so frustrating. I will add them soon!

message 342: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments When does this round end? I am having a lot of issues with my computer lately...so sorry guys. I'll get them on, I hope. We keep having to unplug our computer and plug it back in but if my hubby isn't home, I can't get to it to do anything. :(

Round 2 ends November 14...I'd like to see everything in my November 12 so we have extra time to adjust menu if needed.

You can record your info in the thread Vicki and one of us can enter it for you if you like.

As far as that goes...AND THIS APPLIES TO ALL...
If you don't have time to enter, just note it here and someone can help. It is greatly appreciated that everyone can do what you can...but it's understandable if something comes up.

I hope things get better for you soon Vicki :)

message 344: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Thanks, Tammie. I didn't realize we had SO long for this round! I don't want anyone to have to do my books for me. I'll get them done! I thought I only had until this Saturday, October 31, so I am thrilled and much relieved! LOL

message 345: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I know that I have books that need fixed and I'm hoping tomorrow night that I have some serious time to catch them up. I'll slowly get caught up this week. I also am trying to find a good shorter book with a U in it. That's one of my goals this week. I went ahead and added books that I know I'll read in the next week also. I will have more but I haven't put the 200-300 page books on there just yet but have them in reserve if it comes down to us needing them. This week I have longer books.

message 346: by Tammie (last edited Nov 02, 2020 07:38PM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments I think we’re going to need our 2-300 pgs books...like you, I’m searching for Us. We’ve got just over 1.5 weeks and we’re just at the half way point...so let’s go ahead and add at least a few of the shorter...especially if they can help us with our ube spell outs, would like to finish what we have soon...it would be great to get one more in.

I’m getting my reading done, but I’m very behind getting my meals going. Will pledge to get caught up in next few days as well.

Feel free to use any of my ingredients if you need them...just be sure to cross out what you use

message 347: by Shannon (new)

Shannon O'Flynn | 630 comments You guys can also use my ingredients. I dont think ive used any yet so theyre up for grabs. Just make sure to cross them out when used like Tammie said :)

message 348: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments Okay, sounds good. I may find some time today to try to go back and see if some of my shorter books have some good varieties in them for spell-outs or scavenger hunts. I know one of those smaller books had avocado but now I have to remember which one it was. Also, anybody have availability to get a hard copy or e-copy of Kulti? I listened to the audiobook and my e-library doesn't have it. I'm going to see if I can figure out how to use the drive in portion of the library but I'm not sure if they have it. I can attempt to hunt the words for on google but I was going to ask first if anybody could help me out before I went on a hunt. It's a big book so alcohol, drinks, and desserts would be first priority.

Kulti used to be on KU but free no more. You could use it for spell out if nothing else.

message 350: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments Yes, I wish it still was. I'll probably try to figure out about the library situation and how that works for pickup if they have it. If not, I will figure out some way to find some words. I think the google lookup has it in another language and not English. Pfft.
