Although "Get Out" (directed by Jordan Peele) has won countless awards, I wanted to write a review on it, as I have just watched it for the first time, even though it came out in 2017. This movie was incredible and had a story line that was hard to stop paying attention to. To discuss the themes in the movie, I will need to include a slight *spoiler alert.
Although the story is set in modern day, the main theme of the movie is slavery and heavy racism. We follow the story of Chris, an African American man who is dating Rose, a Caucasian woman. He is invited over to her home and continuously discovers creepier things about the family. The main thing he notices is that all of the housekeepers are all African American and that they behave strangely - they don't seem to be unhappy at all. Chris comes to discover that his girlfriend's family has been hypnotizing all the African-American boyfriends (and girlfriend) that Rose brings home and are auctioned off. The consciousness inside of their bodies are stuck in the "sunken place," as Rose's mother called it, while dead family members' consciousnesses are placed into the body.
This movie had me on the edge of my seat and the story was incredible. I would recommend this movie for anyone who loves interesting stories that will keep you watching.
