Jchi2210 | 1 comments I would like to preface this request for books by stating that I think I may be a sucker for tropes. I enjoy the young protagonist going to an academy/school and learning/training to be more powerful. I enjoy the coming of age hero that learns to be a master sword man type stuff. Please forgive me for the tropes that I fall for.

With that out of the way, I am really looking for a new book series to read. I enjoy reading books that have strong/powerful protagonists. I don't mind if they're young or if it's a coming of age type book. What really started me down this rabbit hole was the book called The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter. I thoroughly enjoyed it and need something to fill the time until book 2 comes out. It reminded me of An Ember in the Ashes book quite a bit, although I never did like the direction that that series went in after the first book.

I also wanted to say that I have tried the Wheel of Time books and I really couldn't get past book 2 or 3. I also tried Malazan book of the Fallen series and couldn't catch on to it either.

Here are some books that I did absolutely love and didn't want to put down and stayed up till 5 a.m reading:

The Kingkiller Chronicles
Red Rising series by Pierce Brown
Most Brandon Sanderson books
Eragon book series (when I was younger)
Throne of Glass series
Scythe series
Legend series by Marie Lu

I would really like to find something that I can add to that list. Thanks!

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2790 comments Try the Powder Mage series by Brian McClellan and the Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemisin. Cool magic system and powerful protags.

Eva | 968 comments - The Honor Harrington series also as a powerful (or at least very smart) protagonist (On Basilisk Station)
- anything by David Gemmell is probably going to be your jam, e.g. Legend, or Lion of Macedon.
- The City We Became - reading it right now and NYC's avatars feel very powerful
- The Black Prism - this has many main characters, but most of them are or become very powerful (although some lose their power)
- Jade City - powerful magical gangsters

And Theft of Swords. They are not young protagonists, but I feel confident based on your description it will appeal to you.

The Dragonbone Chair and the rest of the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn Series

Eva | 968 comments Oh my god, have we read the same Assassin's Apprentice? I've read a character who was more trapped and helpless, without any kind of agency! But maybe that changes later in the series?

Nutri I would recommend The Masquerade series about Baru Cormorant - it's written by Seth Dickinson. It's easily one of the best (if not the best) political fantasy series I've read so far.
Baru Cormorant is the protagonist, and her story begins when she's very young, also attending to school is an important arc of the beginning of the story. :)

Evan Peterson | 10 comments Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher..
In fact anything by Jim Butcher will have characters that seem become Uber powerful over time ( in my estimation sometimes ridiculously too powerful..but that is just my unpopular opinion)

M.A. A. McCrackin | 17 comments I second on Codex Alera. I love that series. It has been my absolute favorite for years. There are characters within that I don’t like, but Tavi more than makes up for it. The character growth in this series is amazing. I recommend it to everyone

JCHI!! Have you read this? This is exactly what you are looking for. You had me at Master Sword. If you're familiar with the lore then you will love this book.

That's been in my TBR for a while; I'll have to move it up!
