Sacha Gilbert | 28 comments Moonlight (dir. Barry Jenkins) is another A24 movie with beautiful scenes and a great story. It follows the story of Chiron, a black boy growing up in a rough neighborhood in Miami. The story is divided into three parts: Little, Chiron, and Black, which represent his youth, adolescence, and adulthood respectively.

There isn't exactly a "plot," which is the case with most coming of age movies. Usually, I am not into these types of movies that don't have some sort of antagonist, but this movie was an exception for me.

Chiron doesn't fit in, which is shown from the very start of the movie. He doesn't have a great family life, he's quiet and shy; in fact, he only really has one friend: Kevin. In this movie, we watch Chiron slowly realizing his sexuality. (Spoiler:) By the final part, "Black," Chiron is a completely different person. He doesn't seem shy at all, and it almost seems completely unrealistic. However, when he meets Kevin at the end of the movie, everything starts piecing together, and everything makes sense again.

5/5 stars.
