hahaha. Yep. I know not everyone will complete it, but that is why it's a challenge. hahaha

To be honest, I'm not sure I've even read 15 books in the last 6 months.

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 281 comments Yeah that'll be a pretty big challenge considering my overall lack of reading focus in 2020 lol! But maybe it'll be a good push. I always read for the full 24 hours on the actual day, even when I'm in a horrible reading slump, so Dewey's does have magic powers! :D

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 281 comments A couple of questions:
1) Can audiobooks count?
2) Is there any rule for counting books we've already started? I have a lot of books already on the go lol.

Oh gosh audiobooks better count!! lol.

lol true!

message 8: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Audiobooks and books already started both count.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments I see that previously started books count, do all books have to be completed?
In that vein, if you read a book that is over 500 pages and only read 500 pages before the challenge ends, does that count?
If we only read 75% of each book for each "read 75% of book" prompt, does that count?
And this challenge ends on Oct 23?

Thanks Kate!

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments Oh one more question, graphic novels/comics count, yes?

Kelley (shewolf0316) | 505 comments Mod
so if we originally post a book for one challenge, then decide to use it in a different challenge instead and replace it with a different book, can we do that? I am reading a book right now that can fit 4, 5, 8, 13, or 15. Can I move it around as suits my needs as long as in the end it only counts towards one challenge?

I think it's only set in stone once you fill in the Google form. You can swap as much as you want until then.

These are good questions that definitely made me think. I think that we are going to need for the books to be completed during the challenge. Additionally, for books that are started and you complete for the challenge, you will still need to read the minimum page count for the challenge. So we have a 125 page count minimum. You will need to read at least that many pages for the book to count... And the book must be completed. So, if you have a 600 page book that you already read 500 pages, that would not work because you didn't meet the 125 page minimum. However, if you had only read 450, then it would be able to count. Meanwhile, if you only read the first 125 of a 250 page book, that wouldn't count because you do need to complete the book.

Yes, comic books and graphic novels count, as long as they are more than 125 pages.

Yes, you can definitely do that. That is why I made it so we can all have our own threads so we can have as much space to organize as we need. I plan on putting my books in every category they fit in and only deciding on the last couple of days which book will go where based on filling the most prompts. I hope that makes sense.

message 15: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 566 comments I have an absolute lack of autumn/spring covers. So I need to go for setting. Is it enough that half the book is set during the correct season? (That half of the book does meet the 125 page minimum, just).

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 281 comments Does the "can be multiple books" note for the long book item mean that instead of reading one long book, we can choose to read several small books that add up to at least 500 pages? e.g. two 250 page books. I just noticed that note, but it's also there for the small book item, which makes less sense...

At this point finishing looks unlikely for me lol but it's possible that replacing the long book with three more Fear Street books would feel more achievable since they're very bingeable. :D

I think that part is only for the youngsters.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments Jamie wrote: "Just to clarify, there is no minium page requirement for a short book?"

The minimum for any book in the challenge is 125 pages.

That doesn't seem right. From the rules: "The only other requirement is that qualifying books need to be over 125 pages (except for the short book task and for readers under 13)."

Requiring the short book to be between 125 and 249 pages seems oddly specific. One of my immediate TBR books was 121 pages so I used that one for the short book item.

Oh I didn't see the "and" there. I read it as except for the short book task for readers under 13.

That is what I wasn't sure about. Hoping a novella could count. Getting tricky to get these done in time.

message 23: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 566 comments It definitely looks like the short book task is exempt from the length rule. I have used a book that was 100 pages long.

But the bit where the long book task says it can be multiple books I interpret as being only for those under 13. Unfortunately. lol If I could use a series I would have completed that one by now.

message 24: by Susan (new)

Susan | 678 comments Kate, what is the deadline for finishing the pre read a thon challenge? Is it the start time for the read a thon? I highly doubt that I'm going to finish the remaining 6 books by Saturday but curious on the deadline.

Yes, I'll accept that.

Correct. Only a maximum for that particular one.

Like Elyse pointed out, that is only for the youngster. I wouldn't expect a 7 year old to read a single 500 page book. So simply reaching the page count would be the challenge for them.

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Susan wrote: "Kate, what is the deadline for finishing the pre read a thon challenge? Is it the start time for the read a thon? I highly doubt that I'm going to finish the remaining 6 books by Saturday but curio..."

Yes. But I am thinking that perhaps I should have made it by the final hour of the readathon. I will try that instead for next time. Or getting this out a month before the event instead of three weeks. My book slump is so severe that I haven't done a single task :(

Just my two cents here. I like having the Pre-Readathon challenges separate from the Readathon. That way, everyone starts 'fresh' at the same time on Readathon day with new challenges, etc.

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 281 comments Ann A wrote: "Just my two cents here. I like having the Pre-Readathon challenges separate from the Readathon. That way, everyone starts 'fresh' at the same time on Readathon day with new challenges, etc."

Me too. I don't like being told what to read during the read-a-thon. I'd sooner have the pre-readathon challenge start earlier.

message 31: by Kate (last edited Oct 21, 2020 09:47AM) (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) I am thinking of starting it a month ahead of the readathon next time. That should give plenty of time. For some reason I had it in my head it was important to start on the first of the month, even though I had planned this months ago. LOL

That would be good. 15 tasked books in just over 3 weeks with no prep time is too much. I am going to be burnt out of reading before the readathon starts I fear. Instead of an alternate task, we needed a pass on a book for this month. Lol.

message 33: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) I had also forgot when writing it up, that I had only meant to do 10 tasks for this time period. It’s so hard to find a happy medium between the speed readers and the normal readers and those of us who are in a total book slump. Haven’t finished a book in literally months :(

message 34: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 412 comments If there is a giveaway, maybe a tier entry. Like for every 5 tasks you do, you get 1 entry. And just as the fun factor, each person can choose their own (5, 10, or 15) challenge level based on their life.

message 35: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 412 comments Regardless though, I love having a challenge leading up to the readathon!

Kate (kathrynlouwca) That’s really smart! I like that idea and will definitely use it next time.

Either works. Whatever makes it easier and more enjoyable for you.

We usually don't find out until after the current readathon is over. I'm gonna guess Oct 23.

Depends on the group also --- facebook group, Twitter, and Goodreads work together well (and instagram) - this person is hosting a lot this morning including mini challenge and sprints

There's his twitter status with brief announcements but the link is to this personal blog that lists more details
