Sacha Gilbert | 28 comments The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan was the first real book I'd ever read on my own. My brother had given it to me when I was in elementary school, and I read it and loved it. During quarantine, I eventually got to the point of boredom where I was rereading books and rewatching movies from my childhood.

This book is based around Greek mythology. Percy Jackson, the main character, had grown up not knowing his biological father. At age twelve, he discovers that he is a demigod; his real father is Poseidon, the god of the sea. 70 years prior, the three eldest male gods, Poseidon, Hades, and Zeus, had sworn an oath that they would no longer have children. Percy represented that broken oath by Poseidon. In the story, Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen, raising some suspicions about Percy.

I still really love this book and I could probably read it multiple times. It has a lot of nostalgia around it, and the rest of the series is also really good.
