What is a BOM (Book of the Month)?

At NRBC we use a more structured approach to our BOMs. A reading schedule is posted prior to the start date and discussion questions are posted each day regarding that section of the book. We ask for volunteers to write the discussion questions for each section, and to engage with responses from the other readers. The nominee of the successful book is required to write a set of questions.

Each month we have two BOMs: an Adult Fiction or Non-Fiction title (usually starting around the 2nd of the month) and a Young Adult title (usually starting around the 16th of the month)

The titles are selected following an open nomination period (usually running from the 10th to 25th of the month) and a voting period (usually running from 27th to 3rd of the month).

Nomination threads can be found here. Our previous BOMs can either be seen on the group bookshelf or on this spreadsheet. We do not repeat titles - if you want to read and discuss with friends then you are encouraged to request a Buddy Read thread be set up

“Books of the Month” (“BOMs”) include:

• A reading schedule which can range from 50, 75, to 100 or so pages a day.

• Discussion questions posted daily by moderators and volunteer group members who help one of us out. We love members who volunteer to write discussion questions. If you'd like to give it a go, just post in the thread the date you'd like.

• If the book is over about 400 pages, we'll usually plan a break day.

• Members do NOT have to answer every question, they are meant to stimulate conversations about the books AND allow us to glance back upon them when the sequels come out. This helps us to remember what exactly happened in the previous book.

• We find this style of reading to be more fun than just posting one or two sentences about a book. We feel this is what distinguishes us as being a ‘book club’ rather than just another GoodReads ‘group.’

• If you can NOT start the book on time, feel free to join in at a later date. They are set up to make it easy to do so.

• Moderators are people too, so occasionally we get sick, have to work late at our real jobs, or have something that keeps us from writing the questions. Please forgive us; we're only human and we don't get any compensation for what we do--not even free books!

• Likewise, if you volunteer to write discussion questions, but then real life gets in the way, please let the moderators know as soon as possible so we can organise a replacement

• Discussions and questions are set up to make you think, analyze, and see things you, or even we, may have missed. Feel free to add your own thoughts at any time, if you think we've missed something.

• If you've read the book, feel free to let us know what you thought about the book. You can do so at the end of the read, or, if you can't wait, add spoiler tags before you comment

Here at NBRC we love our BOMs! And whilst they get a lot of love during team challenges they can be a bit unloved outside those times. So, we have a new incentive for participation during the year: the chance to change your participation in the BOMs into extra draws in the team challenge DQ randomiser!

For each BOM, starting with the January 2022 Adult BOM, that you participate in, you can collect participation points! Three participation points will give you an extra entry!

So, bring on the reading and the chatting!

Rules:
For each NBRC BOM you participate in (i.e. answer at least three sets of DQs within a month of the start of the BOM) you will get a participation point. During challenges you can swap your participation points for an extra entry in the randomiser, on a basis of 3 participation points to 1 extra entry. Your team will be allowed a maximum of 6 entries for each BOM.

Restrictions:
- you must link posts to your participation if you want to claim them
- one one set of DQs will be allocated to each team
- must be from the main group, Backroom BOM participation doesn't count
- takes effect from January 2022 BOMs
- participations are not transferrable (i.e. you can't pool wiyh another player)

Example:
The first challenge BOM is the June 2022 Adult BOM.

Cat participated in the January and February, plus the May Themed BOMs (5 participation points in total). She can therefore claim ONE extra entry for the June Adult, and still has two participation points. She participates in the June Adult, and thus gains an additional participation point (to a total of three). She can turn these three in for an extra entry in the June Themed BOM. She now has no participation points remaining.

Team Mods have three volunteers for the June Adult BOM: Cat (could claim two entries), Judith (could claim three entries) and Sophie (could claim two entries). They are only permitted a maximum of 6 entries, and so Judith only turns in enough participation points to claim two entries. Judith still has participation points to claim another entry in the June Themed BOM.
