I'm currently craving some water based hijinks in speculative fiction. Children of Ruin appeals most after seeing it pop up on my timeline yesterday, but I'd prefer to read something new to me. Must be a standalone novel or a completed series. A spacefaring aquatic species would most definitely sate my thirst. It doesn't have to take place entirely underwater (or at all). Don't be afraid to recommend fantasy.

Eva | 968 comments I had no idea Children of Ruin has underwater locations: now I want to read the series even more!

You could join our current buddy-read of The Engines of God which has alien underwater temple ruins that contain the answers to very vital mysteries and need to be explored quickly before the planet's terraforming is started.

Also have a look at the recs in this thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Or maybe Peter Watts' Beyond the Rift?

So now I'm worried that I've spoiled a surprise in CoR, but at the same time... How does that not rachet up the excitement levels to reading the book?

That and the blurb sounds perfect! I've bought the ebook for The Engines of God and will start it immediately.

That thread seems to be seeking pirate tales and humans v sea creatures stories, but thanks anyway. EoG will hopefully see me through the week.

Thank you!

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments Peter Watts is an excellent suggestion but start with Starfish

And I will go a little bit out there and recommend Lagoon as well

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments I just finished Driving the Deep #2 of the Finder Chronicles and the majority of the story takes place underwater & ice of a moon.

Finder #1 is currently on Audible Plus if you have audible. You need to read #1 before #2. I've enjoyed both books.

Gabi | 3441 comments David Brin's "Startide Rising" takes place on a water planet. (I'm on the road, so I can't link atm)

Startide Rising by David Brin.
I was also going to suggest that. It’s part 2 of the Uplift Saga.

Startide Rising’s MCs are space travelling evolved Earth aquatic mammals, and as Gabi says has a mostly watery setting.

Comes highly recommended. Unfortunately not read it myself, might be worth a look at.

message 12: by Don (new)

Don Dunham There was a book by either Alastair Reynolds or Ian M. Banks that had genetically modified aquatic species that were prized as fighter pilots because they were naturally wired to offense and defense in 3 dimensions...
Cannot remember the title right now.
