message 1: by Susan (new)

Susan Lewallen (susanlewallen) | 797 comments Frankie travels back from her aid work in Kenya to her parents’ home in New Hampshire for the summer, where an arsonist is slowly terrorizing the little town. She wrestles with her father’s progressive dementia and her own uncertainties about her career and personal life. A summer fling (that’s all it seemed like to me anyway) should add some tension but I found it dull. Frankly I didn’t think she wrestled very convincingly with any of the issues confronting her. I wasn’t satisfied with the resolution of any of the conflicts and I didn’t understand the purpose of a number of the secondary characters. There is some nice prose and one vivid description of a fire racing through a house will stay with me. But the loose plot and too much mundane detail kept me from enjoying the book much.
