Travis Foster (travismfoster) | 1154 comments Hi all,

Beyond PacMan at pizza places in the 80s, I've played no video games. My son, however, is all in and has a PS4. Any suggestions for high fantasy games he and I could play together? They'd have to be good for someone like me with no experience and preferably rated Teen rather than Mature (though some M games might be okay).

Thanks!

P.S. If it helps, he's about to turn 13.

I'm assuming you want to use that PS4? Most games I'm aware of for the PS are online cooperative, not couch co-op. But I think Diablo 3 is available, which has a kind of fun fantasy story about reclaiming the world from the demons of hell. and should be fairly simple, if the computer version is any indication. Heads up though, there is only 1 black playable character and it's a super racist "witch doctor" so...yeah.

Phillip Murrell | 604 comments If you don't mind going back to older games, I recommend the Fable series. They can play couch co-op (at least some of them) and are definitely a PG-13 rating. I also had a blast with them, especially part III.

Sarah | 3169 comments I think Fable is only available on XBox? But it is lots of fun.

I have enjoyed Dragon Age in the past. Please be warned there is nudity and sexual content but they are great fantasy games.

There is Horizon Zero Dawn which is also a great fantasy/SF game. No nudity that I am aware of. I never actually finished it.

I'm a jerk sorry. I didn't read closely enough. Neither of these have local co-op. I will say my daughter has been enjoying Legend of Zelda on her Nintendo Switch and the way we play together is literally just to take turns. She'll play for a bit and then hand the controller off to me for a bit and then I'll hand it back to her.

It's not really ideal but I can see that working for either of the above games. For me it's more about spending time with her. We still have a lot of fun and seeing her problem solve has been interesting.

Leticia (leticiatoraci) My kids, 10 and 8, like Minecraft, Untitled Goose Game, Spore, Duck Life, Plants vs Zombies and Rock of Ages. Many of these games you can play on Steam with a computer too. For two players I would recommend Minecraft and Rock of Ages.

Micah Sisk (micahrsisk) | 1436 comments Divinity: Original Sin (either 1 or 2)? I've only played a few hours of the first one but have watched quite a bit of it online. The second one is rated very good. Both are rated M for gore and violence but I don't remember them being particularly brutal. Watch them on youtube some and see for yourself.

These are turn-based combat classic Role-Playing Games. You and your son may or may not be into that kind of play. The combat requires no twitchy hand-eye coordination and is a lot more strategic or ... tactical I guess. They get good ratings.

Chris | 1130 comments Co-Optimus is a website that lists all cooperative video games. You can search by platform, genre, ESRB rating, couch co-op, etc.

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments If you aren't committed to the idea of an action game vs a turn-based one, I suggest Dragon Quest XI! (My avatar is an enemy from that series, so there's a teeny weeny bit of bias there.)

There are some extremely mild action elements in the world exploration, but the combat itself is completely turn-based. While I'm not sure if you can play it co-op, it's very friendly to passenger-seat play. It's certainly "high fantasy." It lives up to its title by having dragons, for one thing...

Can't play Dragon Quest XI now without thinking that I'm killing Beth now.

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments Not to worry, I'll flee in the first turn before you can even move 50% of the time.

Nor am I a droplet of mercury, as one of my other GR friends thought. :D

The creature is called "metal slime."
