Zuzana | 2568 comments Hi Elli, Happy New Year to you, too.

Guys, I’m eager to start training my falcon! I’ve already placed an order for the Falconry Glove at Jack’s, and now I’m turning my attention to the Beginner Hunting Skills quest.

I’d love some suggestions for “3 books that feature a real bird of prey in the text. It must be an actual bird—no spaceships like the Millennium Falcon or metaphorical hawks keeping watch. Only the genuine talons-and-feathers kind will do!”

While I enjoy Harry Potter, I’m not quite in the mood to re-read the books for the “owl”. Any recommendations, please?

Note: Most common birds of prey - Eagle, Falcon, Hawk, Owl, Kestrel, Vulture.

That's a difficult one... Hmmm

1. I think there is an eagle in The Dark Tower.. I seem to remember the Gunslinger training as an eagle handler when he was young. Been years since I read it so I can't be sure...

2. There are Eagles in the Lord of the Rings trilogy... in The Return of the King.. & The Hobbit, or There and Back Again

3. There are hawks in the one of the books in the Mercy Thompson series... River Marked?

Midnight at the Blackbird Café - has a hawk. I also like to look for series with birds in the name in case other birds are named. I'm going to do some more looking.

There are eagles in the Black Sun series.

Also the Ransom Riggs series has people who transfer to birds, I have to rack my brain to remember if there are any of prey though.

For Kindlecorn (and possibly other summon monsters that don't have a weekly limit) - can you only summon 1 monster at a time? Or can you summon a few at a time and fight multiple in one day (after 1 day wait)?

1. In the Digging for relief quest, it says "Find a book where "deep" and/or "depth" appears at least 40 times". So I just have to find the book? Not read it? ;) ;)

2. Heal Potions: Minor Heal does 5 hp, Major Heal does 15 hp, and "Heal" does 10 hp. Why isn't it called "Medium Heal"? (I call it that in my logs!)

3. Doubling attacks: what's included in the doubled part?
ex. Cat: base atk = 2. Using Radagast and Pet Plus Potion, it would be 2 * 2 * 2 = 8 atk, yeah? But what if the Cat is wearing the Lucky 13 Collar?
Is it (2+1) * 2 * 2 = 12 atk
or (2 * 2 * 2) + 1 = 9 atk?
Ditto with the Fish. I think this can all be remedied by adding "to base attack" or "to total attack" to the items that add atk points.

Fresh books?
Counts as fresh:
1. if I read a book after the quest/etc start date
2. if I buy a book from someone and they duplicate it to sell to me, even if they read it before the state date
3. if I glue 2 books together using book glue
4. if I cover 2 books together using book cover
5....?

Doesn't count as fresh:
1. a book I read before quest/etc start date
2...?

Maybe fresh?
1. if I read a book after the start date and then duplicate that book myself, I would think it counts as fresh.

UNKNOWN!
1. if I read a book BEFORE the start date but duplicated it AFTER, would that be fresh or not? It kinda seems not, but it someone else dups a book for me, it counts so I'm unsure

Some are easier than others.

Rebecca, as neither Kindlecorn description nor Timed monsters header specify the time, only requirement is the bait. So if you lure/ summon it properly, you're good to go.

Thanks, Sandy. I found it, too. It's very helpful, but it lists only books where birds of prey are the main topic or protagonists. For the quest a mere appearence in the text is fine, for example a character watching a hawk in the sky circling its prey.

Keeper of the Books ★ NBRC ★ | 175 comments I’ve just reviewed and updated It’s Called a Lance… Hello! Part 1 quest.

As Ray rightly pointed out, the original version was far too restrictive—there simply aren’t enough books with 4.5+ ratings to choose from. So, I’ve adjusted the requirements to better fit the story. Now, books with ratings of 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3 correspond to jousting points of 1, 2, and 3.

It’s still challenging but much more achievable!

Here’s the updated wording:

"A jousting tournament is coming to town! Perfect! You've been looking for a chance to impress long reigning champion, Count Adhemar. You decide to review the rules and sign up.

+1 point for a hit that does not break the tip of the lance.
+2 points for a hit that breaks the tip of the lance.
+3 points for a hit that shatters the tip of the lance into several or multiple fragments.

1. Read a book with an average rating of 4.1 or higher and with 100-10,000 ratings. +1 XP
2. Read a book with an average rating of 4.2 or higher and with 10,000- 100,000 ratings. +2 XP
3. Read a book with an average rating of 4.3 or higher and with over 100,000 ratings. +3 XP

Points are additive, but you must read the previous # before collecting a higher #. For example, if you read #1 and #2 you will have +3 XP. But if you only read #1 and #3, you can not collect points for #3 until #2 is completed."

Hello Cathy, welcome back! :)

I’ll do my best to answer your questions:

1. Hidden monsters can be found after you’ve obtained a puppy (from The First Puppy of Novel Kingdom quest) and trained it in tracking (via Jill’s Dog Training).
• To attack monsters labeled as "Minor Hidden," you’ll need a puppy with the Beginner Tracking Certificate (e.g., Woolymarks).
• To attack monsters labeled as "Hidden," you’ll need a puppy with the Intermediate Tracking Certificate (e.g., Merely Kats).

2. I didn’t create this quest, but if I remember correctly, the jousting points are inspired by the movie A Knight’s Tale. In the quest, they’re included mainly for storytelling purposes. Originally, the points listed at the top didn’t match the ratings below. However, I’ve made some adjustments (see the post above), so the ratings now align a bit more with the jousting point system, making the quest easier to follow.
Hope this helps! :)

Keeper of the Books ★ NBRC ★ | 175 comments Rebecca wrote: "Also is the consensus that the magic pumpkin can duplicate an egg? That's consumable right?"

We really need to put together a clear list of items that can and cannot be duplicated.

At first, I was going to say yes to the bunny egg, but then I realized something: the egg only lasts up to a week before it rots. The magic pumpkin requires you to keep the item in your possession for two weeks while it works its duplication magic. Since the egg would spoil before the process is complete, the duplication would fail. The pumpkin can’t create something out of nothing, after all!

1. Fixed. It's now "read" to make it clear. Thanks for spotting that, Ray.

2. You’re absolutely right—it does seem like “Medium Heal” would make more sense. But I can also understand the logic behind the original naming: the basic Heal Potion represents the standard healing value of 10 HP, with Minor being 5 below that and Major being 5 above it.

Even if I wanted to rename it to "Medium Heal," doing so would be a big task. It would require reviewing and updating countless posts, many of which are locked or can only be edited through the mod’s account. At this point, most players are probably used to the current naming, and the change would be purely cosmetic for what would be a massive amount of work.

3. Doubling pets' attacks:

Cat's basic attack is 2 + 1 (Lucky 13 Collar),
Pet Plus Potion, Radagast and fish all can double a cat's attack: 3 x 2 x 2 x 2= 24 AP

Other pets with Pet Plus Potion in effect and Radagast as the companion:
Horse: 1 x 2 (PPP) x 2 (Radagast)= 4 AP
Puppy with the Intermediate Attack Certificate: 2 x 2 (PPP) x 2 (Radagast)= 8 AP

Note on Radagast: He only affects pet's combat skills, i.e. when their interacting directly with the foe - either detracting its HP (cat, dog, horse) or AP (Rock LVL1).

The best example is the Rock:
Rock LVL 1: diminishing your enemy's attack power: 1 x 2 (PPP) x 2 (Radagast) = detracts 4 AP from the opponent's attack power
Rock LVL 2: healing power: 1 x 2 (PPP)= heals the hero for 2 HP at the end of the battle (Radagast has no effect)

!!! PPP doubles drops from all your pets, but only pets - Bird the Friend is not your pet, also Lemon tree, Pumpkin, Horse Rug, or the Garden are not your pets - so PPP has no effect.

Fresh books?

EDIT: After some polishing:

Fresh Books

What counts as fresh?
1. A book you read after the quest or event start date.
2. A book purchased from someone in the Open Market thread (even if they read it before the start date). The date of purchase becomes the new "read" date. (This should not be misused to bypass fresh book requirements by swapping older books with friendly adventurers to "create" fresh books.)
3. A book created by gluing two books together with book glue after the start date—but only for tasks that rely on page count.
4. A book created by covering two books together with book cover after the start date—but only for tasks requiring a specific number in a series.
5. A book you read after the start date and later duplicated yourself. The "read" date remains the same.

What doesn’t count as fresh?
1. A book you read before the quest or event start date.
2. A book you read before the start date, even if you duplicated it yourself before or after the start date. The "read" date remains unchanged.

Important Note: Swapping older books via the Open Market to bypass fresh book requirements is not allowed! Please honor the spirit of this rule to keep the challenge fair and fun for everyone.

I’m considering setting a limit on duplicating books to keep things balanced—perhaps something like, “No book can be duplicated more than once.” Since purchased books are considered fresh, you would still be allowed to duplicate them one time.

I haven’t decided yet whether to enforce this rule, but if I do, it will be announced in the Notice Board thread!

As for your question, Rebecca, the Duplication Potion should work on bought books.

BTW Congrats on your first Emerald Dragon Battle! You go, girl!

Cool, thanks for clarifying. This does however bring up another specific situation that I don’t know is intended or not.

I could have a not-fresh (stale?) book that fits a quest requiring fresh books and could offer to swap it (sell for zero gold) with someone in the same situation. We would both end up with fresh books, right?

I ran this by my very spirit-of-the-rule partner (as opposed to me, who am very letter-of-the-rule, ie loophole-finding lol). He plays D&D and suggested that perhaps this is intentional to encourage interaction between players.

Keeper of the Books ★ NBRC ★ | 175 comments New Announcement on the Notice Board! Cutoff for old books!

As we prepare the game for an influx of new players, we are conducting a thorough review of all threads to correct errors and enhance game balance. Our goal is to create a fair and enjoyable experience for both veteran adventurers and newcomers alike.

The most significant upcoming change is the cutoff for old unused books (see here ), which will take effect on July 1, 2025. This will provide ample time to incorporate these books into quests or wait for the cutoff date to gain compensation for forfeited books.

Note: To use a book, incorporate it into a quest. The quest must be marked as "completed" in your adventure log before July 1, 2025.

SandyL | 4747 comments Re: the new rule about old books......

I am in the middle of a lot of the quests and I have books slotted for some tasks that I've read all the way back to 2022, but haven't finished the quest yet. I read primarily romance and some mystery, and not so much of the fantasy, sci fi and paranormal that so many of the tasks are geared towards. Does this mean I'll lose those books and have to start over on the unfinished quests? I'm not complaining about the rule - I just need to understand it.

When a new quest is posted, I don't use my old books for them.
Maybe any new quests should have a reminder that only fresh books after whatever date (and the date should be listed since you can't really tell later on)?

Thanks!

Welcome back, Cathy!

re 1: Yes, it works unless the monster desctiption states otherwise.

Sandy, I completely understand your concerns. The long hiatus between quests over the past 4–5 years has left many veteran players with large backlogs of books. While I can't change the past lack of quests, something needed to be done to balance things moving forward.

The cutoff rule is the fairest solution I could devise. It levels the playing field for all adventurers, regardless of how long they've been participating. The good news is that there’s a full six month period to prioritize unfinished quests, shuffle books between tasks, and complete what you can. Even for quests that remain uncompleted, there’s a safety net—1 XP compensation per forfeited book.

For context, I have about 10 unfinished quests I'm working on and two incomplete upgrades for my magic staff (Levels 19&20: currently at 8/19 and 5/20 books, meaning 26 more books to go). For reference, I finished only 26 books last year! So this adjustment definitely doesn’t favor me—it impacts everyone, including myself. I’m taking it as a challenge, planning to reshuffle my books strategically, plan my new reads to finish old quests, look for missing books at the Market, use my Santa Coupons, and whatever remains on July 1st, I’ll still get the 1 XP per every "lost" book.

SandyL wrote: "When a new quest is posted, I don't use my old books for them.

But you can, and lot of people do. Some quests already have fresh book requirements, but features like the Open Market and Duplication Potion have made them under current situation mostly ineffective.

As for the dates, you can always refer back to the Notice Board thread. Each quest ties its "fresh books" requirement to its publication date. In the thread, quests are either tagged with a header like "Quests starting [month/day/year]," or, if no header is present, the quest's start date is the publication date of the post (visible in the top-right corner). This ensures clarity for anyone revisiting older posts.

SandyL | 4747 comments Thanks Zuzana.

I guess I'd better get working on trying to either reshuffle books or finish quests!! I have over 100 books earmarked for various unfinished quests and 38 unfinished quests. 😊 If nothing else, the XP points will put me that much closer to the next level, and I'll have more tasks to read for again!

Do you think there could be an exception for certain tasks - for instance the 5000 Leagues Under the Sea? I've been putting my books that don't have anywhere else to go there, I have 29 books and only 480 leagues so far!

And 38 unfinished quests?! WOW! Do you count all the quests that you haven't completed (in the Quests thread)? Or do you work simultaneously on 38 quests?

I don't think there will be any exceptions. But 29 books in the the 5000 Leagues Under the Sea quest and 4000+ leagues to go is not right. That quest brings you only 2 Major Heal potions and 5 XP!!! The right thing to do is to (view spoiler) I guarantee that those books could be used in other quests much more efficiently.

Look around for better quests or use them in scrounger hunts. Even if you throw all those books at the Goblin, or Brown Bat or whichever Common Monster you can kill in one blow, you'll get 29 XP and at least 29 drop items. See?

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3793 comments Sandy if there is anything you are looking for to complete some of these quests, post in the open market! I have a backlog that I would be happy to trade for. I read most fiction genres and basically no nonfiction lol.

I definitely have been trying to catch up on quests from my backlog of books but what I really want is XP to level up !

The only thing I really have been hoarding books for is that book glue to level up my sword because I am afraid of big books hahah so I’ll be prioritizing that for sure!

Also question (my reading comprehension is exhausted today) - does this mean that books read before Jan 2025 cannot be duplicated? It seems like it I just want to verify.

Megs (meganlikesbooks) | 373 comments Quick question about the old book cut-off.

How does it work for multi-stage quests where you can get quest rewards at different stages without having finished the full quest (say the relay race for example)? Would each stage be considered separately?

Example: Relay Race Quest
If I finished the first 4 legs, I would have received the reward for completing 3 legs. So would I only lose the books I used for the 4th leg, then restart at leg 4? Or would I lose all the books and start all over, since I technically hadn't completed a quest? And, if so, would I lose the quest reward for finishing the first 3 legs?

I hope that makes sense! Thanks!

Can I use pets/hat/bauble on magical creatures?

And I do have one health gem but could not remember where I got it. That was a looooong time ago:)

Thanks for the links.

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I'm so excited to be coming back! Didn't realize it had been so long (2020). Great job on all the new quests and monsters!

With that cut-off, I know what I'll be doing for the next 6 months - have a TON of books to use and so many open quests...

Zuzana | 2568 comments Cathy, with spells you can only use pets. Hats and baubles bring bonuses to weapons only (sword or staff).

I plan a new feature - Training yard for young and old knights to show off their battle prowess. There will be incentives (small rewards) for doing so. I think that people learn best from examples. That will hopefully help with more complex battle mechanics (Wendigo, Hydras, Queens, etc).

Zuzana | 2568 comments Megs, for multi-level quests, the completed parts are already done, once you cash-in rewards the books are already gone. It wouldn't make sense to get compensation for those books - they were already "used". If there are books in reserve for uncompleted parts of the quest, then those will be affected by the planned cutoff.

Cathy Galloway | 876 comments That's great! I know I peeked at your Wendigo battle since I had no clue how to even begin with that one.

Zuzana | 2568 comments Rebecca, I'm aware that duplication of books needs to be addressed in connection to the cut-off. There will be (I hope) comprehensive rules for that. But the gist will be that old books (pre-2025) won't be eligible for duplication. Otherwise the cutoff would be ineffective.

That's what I was thinking - I will plan on that! Thanks!

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3793 comments Question about the Splintercat - does vulnerable to earth spells, mean the same as weak to? As in, the base attack of the spell is doubled?

Thanks!
