Trisha (trishabisen) | 2389 comments This thread is to discuss Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third book in the Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling.

Pages: 435 pages

Length: 1 Month (December)

Participants: Alaina, Raviteja.

Everyone reads at their own pace during a Buddy Read. Because participants can be at different parts of the book at different times, it is extremely important to mark spoilers so that the book is not ruined for someone who is not as far along as others!!!

Mark spoilers by placing {spoiler} before the text and {/spoiler} after the text but use the < and > instead of the { and }.

Happy Buddy Reading!

Haha yeah, I flew through it! It was hard to stop once I started the book.

This book is one of my favourites in the series and I have no doubt I will do the same once I start it :D

Ashleigh Motbey (ashybear02) | 1686 comments This is always the one I fly through too!

Cassie | 370 comments I always really liked Prisoner of Azkaban, especially as I got older. I love the discovery of the first two books, but the plot really takes off in this book. The character development starts getting really good here too, in my opinion. This is probably the last really good pairing, overall, of book to movie production. After this, it just felt like a sprint to the finish in the movies!

Alaina (ameserole) | 255 comments Let me know if you want to continue this series next year!

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 354 comments Alaina wrote: "Let me know if you want to continue this series next year!"

Definitely yes! We will be doing the rest of the books from January to April I assume. Shall I request for those in the buddy read sign up thread? I do not see Goblet of Fire scheduled for January.

I agree with what you said about the book-movie pairing. The last Harry Potter movie I saw was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and I abandoned the movies after that.

Yeah, I brought that up on the thread and I can let them know that we plan to continue this series! Just wanted to double check with everyone first.

Alaina (ameserole) | 255 comments Raviteja wrote: "Chapter 2.."

Oh wow, I never really thought about it.. but then again - that does make a lot of sense!

Alaina (ameserole) | 255 comments Raviteja wrote: "Chapter 3.."

Comment @ Ch 3, I totally forgot about that when I first read this book but it made so much sense during this re-read. It was fun noticing different things this time around.

Comment @ CH 4, OMG! (view spoiler)

If we are reading for the first time, it is tough to guess because we wouldnt be taught about animagi at that time. Bu during reread, we see a lot of things that we missed before.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 354 comments Alaina wrote: "Ch 5: [spoilers removed]"

I dont think they know Sirius is in Hogwarts. Since Harry is a potential target, they let the Dementors in the train and Hogwarts.

Also, I think Hermione received it after her 'discussion with McGonagall" about the her subjects. That is around when she told Harry to go and said she needs to discuss something with Hermione.

Nevermind.. Sirius was muttering "He's in Hogwarts" before he escaped Azkaban and that is why the dementors were there in Hogwarts.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 354 comments Alaina wrote: "Ch 10: [spoilers removed]"

It sure must be heartbreaking for Harry, to listen to all the stuff. I felt so bad for him there.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 354 comments Alaina wrote: "Ch 15: [spoilers removed]"

That indeed was intense and I was cheering for Gryffindor all the way.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 354 comments ""Your father is alive in you, Harry, and shows himself most plainly when you have need of him. How else could you produce that particular Patronus?"

I wonder if Dumbledore meant that literally or figuratively. :)

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 354 comments Alaina wrote: "Finished: [spoilers removed]"

i dont think Uncle Vernon ever cared about Harry or his family enough, even Harry's parents except for the fact that they can do magic. Harry's sass is always spot on when he's with them!

Ha yes it is! I wish he was more sassy in the movies to them.

Until the last conversation with Sirius and Lupin, this book was pushing Harry down from time to time, making it worse for him. If not for the reveals in the end, I was thinking that Harry would really get depressed.

I feel that the movies never gave importance to Harry's parts with the Dursleys, and they focused more on his life in Hogwarts. Its injustice to Harry's personality as we miss some key aspects of him.

Ashleigh Motbey (ashybear02) | 1686 comments This is probably my favourite book but there was a lot missing from the movie. I like the movies but I don't like how the movies reflect a lot of the characters because a lot of them changed too much, they erased some characters all together and I felt Prisoner of Azkaban was the first one to significantly change things up!! I like them on their own, but not as a reflection of the books or the characters haha
