Old paper books can't have ASINs: this book was probably re-sold in the Amazon marketplace and Amazon added one to identify the item, but we don't use it here. I removed the ASIN.

Oh I saw that and was surprised but thought maybe it was a country difference: is that rule the same worldwide? Or just for older books, maybe?

I think so: I mostly use Amazon Italy, but I guess it's the same method worldwide.

I think every second-hand copy that gets re-sold in the Amazon marketplace has an ASIN, not only old books but more recent ones too.
But in this case the ASIN identifies that single copy, not the edition, and so it's not to be used on Goodreads.

I see, it's good to know, I'll keep that in mind.

I also did not realize, before your first comment, that ASIN was Amazon's system only. Despite seeing those on all things Amazon, I still somehow had assumed it was more universally used equivalent to ISBNs. After your comment, I was guessing that it must be a more recent system only (hence my previous questions)... until I looked it up and realized it was only Amazon's. In that light, it makes sense that in this case it IDed the deal or the copy and nothing else!
