That's too good :D

Xee (xeey) | 3 comments I once nearly missed out on what is now my all time fav series, because I didn't really like the first book's beginning. It seemed hard to read for some reason. The series kept getting rec'd right and left by all and sundry and I decided to try again after a few months. I have never ever been so happy to be wrong.

Having said that, if the writing is too juvenile. Then I'm done after the first 3 chapters. It's really hard for me to put a book down though.I try to see it through to the bitter end.

Anne Bishop's The Others? I'm loving those books so far...

Kelly | 1 comments It all depends on the writing style and maturity level of the book at first (if those 2 are riding high - i stop in the first chapter) - If those pass I aim for 3 or 4 chapters.

Yes, just finished the third book. I wish she wrote faster ...

KritikaB | 103 comments It depends I guess. Usually, I will try to read at least 50 pages. However, if there is some potential, like something is going to happen soon, I might read some more. However, there were some books that I couldn't finished more than a couple of chapters because of the character or writing style.

Irene (irenemikhaylova) | 478 comments It actually depends on many things. I may continue reading for a while if:
- the book has high rating
- my friends left positive reviews
- the book has potential
- the step picks up in 10-20 pages which I just skim, not read
- I promised to read it whole

I will not continue reading if:
- there are many errors
- it's to complicated to follow the plot lines
- it's too shallow or there's no plot whatsoever
- there are disgusting things done to characters

Then there are extenuating circumstances :)
- if the book is boring and I have more interesting book, I will leave it be for a while
- if it's a part of the challenge, I may continue reading
- if I don't have much time and I don't really enjoy the book I may stop reading it

Chanel (bcsaturdai) It's not so much as chapters beofre I give up. I give a book fifty pages before I give up on it. (There has been one book that I have dropped before my page limit and that was Fifty Shades of Grey. I made it exactly five pages before screaming for mercy). If the characters haven't grabbed my attention within the first two chapters I still push. You never know when things could get better.

AlisonClaire | 8 comments You know, I am far less specific when I decide to give up on a book. Frequently, I don't even make a conscious decision to stop reading; I just put it down and don't pick it back up again! I think I have a short attention span though. There are quite a few series that I have started and simply lost interest in.

Lilian Flesher (38460207-lilian-flesher) | 21 comments I usually can always find something about a book I like, sometimes it is very hard to get into a book, especially if it's from a genre your not used to reading, lately I have explored a few OFF THE NORMAL types for me, and found I thoroughly enjoyed them. I do hate errors in books though, and repeated words, repetition is so annoying!!

I would never give a bad review, my motto is if you have nothing nice to say then do not say anything lol, so in that instance if I could not give a good review then I would not bother to leave a review.

message 62: by J (new)

J It depends. If I'm not sure where the book is going, I'll give it until about halfway through the book. If I'm pretty sure I know what's going to happen and I don't like it, I could give it as few as two or three chapters, depending on when I figure it out.

message 63: by Sin Tess (new)

Sin Tess | 3 comments I don't usually give up a book. But if the first 50% of the book isn't that interesting I give up. More often I give up series. It happens when the author doesn't introduce new situations,or he/she repets the situations from where the characters don't evolve.

This was my strategy until I read the first book in the Weather Warden series. I think the first chapter ran on for nearly 100 pages. *shudder* Still haven't shaken the memory!

Christina Harlin | 8 comments Four to five chapters is my usual breaking point - by then I have a fairly good idea of the writer's style and the tone of the story. Tone is a big issue with me. If I give up, this doesn't always mean it's a bad book, merely one that is not to my tastes. There have been plenty of very popular books that I simply couldn't make it through. There have been a few books that I didn't get past four or five pages, much less chapters.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I'll give a book 100 pages to interest me. If it can't, I try a new one!
