Monsters
You may venture out into the surrounding regions of the kingdom to fight monsters and hone your combat skills. Killing monsters will let you gain experience and maybe even special items to help you in your travels. Some monsters are common while others are nearing extinction.

Attacking
• Fights alternate between yourself (The Hero) and the monster.
• First the hero attacks the monster, if the monster is still alive, the hero takes damage equal to the attack power of the monster.
• Certain potions or effects may influence the attack power and affects of the weapons.
• Some monsters may be more susceptible to certain weapons.
• The same weapon may be used multiple times per fight.

Bestiary of the World
Common Monsters - Common monsters exist everywhere in staggering amounts. After you kill one though the others scurry back into their holes for a week. You may either wait a week for them to become hungry and venture out again or bribe them out by using one of your spare books. Unfortunately, books used in this way are eaten and aren't good for anything else.
• Goblin - A green little angry fellow that likes to stab weary (and unweary) travelers with sharp pointy sticks.
6 Attack 10 Health - Reward: 1 Experience, 1 Goblin Bone

• Sewer Rat - The bane of all young hero's, the iconic sewer rat. Biting at ankles, he makes his presence known one nip and nibble at a time.
3 Attack 5 Health - Reward: 1 Experience

• Brown Bat - The brown bats are much prettier than the black bats because of their grace, stamina and ability to make a lovely bat leather hat.
3 Attack 15 Health - Reward: 1 Experience, 1 Bat Wing


Uncommon Monsters - Each of these monsters only has a limited population left. After exhausting the remaining population they will be extinct. Since there are so few of these monsters, they stick around each other like glue. Killing one won't scare off the others.
• Omnibus Troll - The Omnibus Troll is the perfect mix of all trolls in one. It's big and ugly and can occasionally sing Disney based songs when near donkeys. (Population: 3)
7 Attack 35 Health - Reward: 3 Experience, 1 Heal Potion.

• Lexicon Ness Monster - The Lexicon Ness Monster is a close cousin of another more popular lake dwelling creature. It spends it's days frolicking in the water, making bubbles and eating unsuspecting boaters. (Population: 2)
10 Attack 30 Health - Reward: 3 Experience, 1 Minor Poison Potion.

• Big Heart (starting 2/1/15) - A large pinkish Yeti that only shows up during Hallmark holidays. It has a big heart and a soft spot for weakness. Use your weaker (lower level) weapon for an additional 2 damage. If your weapons are the same strength either may be used. (Population: 2)
4 Attack 40 Health - Reward: 3 Experience, 1 Find Items Potion (You found the yeti, now let the yeti find other things).


Rare Monsters - Only one of each of these monsters exist in the world. Killing them will be challenging but will reap great rewards.
• Great Red Dragon - A flaming fiery beast with one molten eye that gleams with the fires of.... well, you know. This beast is highly magical. Your magic staff will only do half of it's normal damage however your sword has an additional 2 attack against this beast.
15 Attack 50 Health - Reward: 30 Experience, Orb of Fire (Adds 3 attack to a magic staff)

• Great Green Dragon - This earth dragon lives deep under a mountain of steel. This beast has become almost immune to the touch of a sword but fire will soften his armor. Your sword will only do half of it's normal damage however your magic staff has an additional 2 attack against this beast.
18 Attack 40 Health - Reward: 30 Experience, Orb of Earth (Adds 3 attack to a sword)

• Great Blue Dragon - This dragon rules the seas, and lakes, and streams, and inlets, and fjords and probably lots of other water related terms. Both of your weapons have a tendency to hit a bit softer on this beast (half as hard if you want to know specifics). However, for each healing potion you use, the blue dragon loses 5 health points.
15 Attack 60 Health - Reward: 30 Experience, Orb of Water (Automatically heal one health at the end of every fight)

• Great Yellow Dragon - This dragon rules the air. Yes... Like all the other flying dragons. But this one rules it extra special. Your one advantage is bat wings. Yes, bat wings. You can use 2 bat wings for a turn to fly up and meet the dragon on it's own turf and increase your attack power by 5!
15 Attack 80 Health - Reward: 30 Experience, Orb of Air (For quests requiring 4 or more items, this reduces the amount of items needed for a quest by 1).

• Great Novel Dragon - The king of all dragons, the Great Novel Dragon has been featured in stories far and wide. To fell this mighty beast you must be the strongest of all the hero's in all the lands in all the worlds in all the universes and so on and so forth.
25 Attack 150 Health - Reward: 50 Experience, Title of Power (The next NBRC newsletter will hail your praise as the "Great Novel Dragon Slayer" and you will receive a place in the Hall of Fame.)

Robin Hood has lost his hood! You never thought you'd see the day but some bandits on the road got the best of him and that place way down low got frozen over. You can barley stand to see him looking so sad and miserable. A local tailor offers to help but needs some leather to form into a new hat.

Provide 4 bat wings for leather and read a book with 6 or less characters in the title to provide a thin string of thread for sewing them all together. Receive 5 experience for re-hooding Mr. Robin.

A Fairy Odd Path

Faeries travel through thinning in the veil called in-between. Three small fairies have gone missing in the in-between. Find them before they're eaten by the Gothere Monster.

Read 3 books that are in-between series numbers. i.e. #6.5 or #2.1 in a series. May be part of a collection of stories but the whole collection must be over the 100 page minimum (a collection will only count towards one of the numbers). Fairies are forgetful but always thankful and after you remind them they provide you a Heal Potion and 2 experience for the rescue.

An important step in any young knights life is his first horse. Actually, once you get a horse you don't take nearly as many steps. So maybe it's really the beginning of the end of steps is acquiring a horse. No matter what, it's a good thing to do.

To acquire a horse you must have perseverance, persistence, perspicacity, performance, perfume and various other per related things.

Find all the items to receive your very first horse.
1) Gold to Buy Horse - Read a book with a mainly gold cover: A Shiver of Light
2) Riding Clothes - Read 3 books under 200 pages.
3) Horseshoes - Read a book with horses as a main part of the story or one set on a farm.
4) Horse Armor - Read a book over 600 pages.

6) Sugar for Treats - Read a book that's sweet (chic lit, romance) It Must Be Your Love
7) Apples for Treats - Read a book with a mainly red cover. Third Grave Dead Ahead

9) Hay for Feeding - Read a book with the title starting with the letter H. Halfway to the Grave
10) Bribe for the Stable Master to allow you to pick your horse - Read a book where someone takes or gives a bribe or where the main character is a thief.

You may choose 1 of two horses. You may also name him as he is now your horse.
Horse 1 is a American Quarter Horse built for speed. He will speed up your common monster respawn time by 1 day (6 days instead of 7).

The Tavern is looking to expand it's culinary offerings and asks you for help procuring the latest delicacy: Smoked Sewer Rat. You cringe a little at the name but agree to help deciding that they probably know more about gastronomic delights than you do. You head out for awhile then bring back 4 cuts of sewer rat, a pile of logs and some seasonings. Smoked Meat with Reduction is on the menu.... You ponder the meaning behind "meat".

Kill 4 sewer rats, these rats must be fresh kills to not poison the tavern patrons with spoiled meat. Read 1 book from the list of banned books for burning. Read 1 book with a seasoning or herb in the title. Completing the delicacy will net you 6 experience.

You are trekking through the kingdom and come to a fork in the road. A three pronged fork to be exact. Being the intrepid adventuter that you are you take the only logical course and pull a die out of your pocket.

Roll the die!

You take your path according to the side now showing.

You continue your trek and come across a stranger who needs your help.

A wizard named Cruamros is a bit of a clumsy wizard and has cast a spell on his pet cat. The cat has turned into a toad. To help the wizard restore his cat to its former self, you need to provide Cruamros with one of the following items which will help him cast his reversing spell on his cat:

1. A mushroom: “I want a pizza. Double cheese, pep-
peroni, onions, green pepper, sausage, and mushrooms." Back to the Bedroom, page 93
2. A flower: "her skirt floated upwards like the petal of a flower opening outwards" The Day We Met location 507
3. A stone: "I felt better with the tea in my hand and padded down the three stone steps into the lounge room...", Walking on Trampolines location 3026

You need to read a book that has one of the items above on the cover, as part of the title or is mentioned in the book (provide page number and sentence the word is used in).

For helping Cruamros you receive +1 exp and a minor poison potion.

Everybody Lies

You have a terrible rash.... well everywhere. It's itchy and scratchy and is stopping you from your love of murdering small fuzzy smelly sewer rats. You've been to Dr. Trowel over in Papeville and Dr. Winchester over in Novelette and even visited the local healing mage Mr. Smile. None of them were able to help. At your wits end you go over to The Academy Teaching Hospital to visit Dr. Cottage the best diagnostician in the region.

Dr. Cottage comes to the door, sneers at you and lets you in. You fumble with your hat then step inside.

"Ummm... Dr. Cottage.... I was told you would be able to help me with my rash. I haven't done anything to cause it!"

Dr. Cottage tells you to sit then storms out of the room. You look over to a whiteboard in the room with the words "signa, causae, curae" scribbled across the top.

Awhile later a young lady comes out and says "Hello, my name is Twelve... I mean Miriam. We think you have too much blood in your body. We're going to suck some out with leeches."

Treatment 1: (treatments must be completed in order)
Spell out the word LEECH by using Spell-It-Out Rules and read a book about blood sucking vampires.
Receive 2 Healing Potions for trying the leech treatment.

The last leech pops off with a *pop* after filling it's belly with blood. Shuddering you look at your skin and sadly you are still covered with rash but now have additional leech bites. Twelve comes back into the room. "Well... that wasn't the issue but we read your horoscope and you need some Gillyweed extract."

Treatment 2:

Finally, drink a lot of water to account for your new gills. Read a book where a large part of it takes place at sea.
Receive 1 Major Heal Potion for trying the Gillyweed treatment.

After recovering from your bout of fishiness, Twelve comes in again. "I'm sorry, we've narrowed it down to your brain having too much evil and it trying to seep out of your skin. We're going to need to perform a trepanation. It's a simple procedure where we bore a hole in your skull to let the evil spirits out." Your eyes go wide. "Ummmmm" you reply. "Could we maybe just try the marigold rub I heard about?" Twelve sighs, "Ok, we can try that first but you're risking your life by leaving all that evil inside."

Treatment 3:
Read a book where the cover is bright yellow to collect the marigolds.

Finally rest a week to recover your health. (Resting one week prevents the adventurer from participating in battles but battle wait timers will still tick and quests may still be turned in.)

Midas quests are a new form of quests that provide gold to the adventurer. Gold may be used when the travelling caravans come to town and used to purchase equipment, potions and other goodies.

Lady Kelly's Missing Quests

After hard day hunt, you enter into the Tavern looking forward to some cool ale and maybe some nice stew you know that's simmering in the back. After all it was you who brought rat meat for it. You're sitting at your table, drinking ale and thinking about quests that are waiting for you tomorrow, when you hear sniffle behind you. You turn around trying to find where the sound came from, but only Lady Kelly is sitting in that direction. You're little scared to approach her, after all she's the Master here, but your kind heart can't say no to damsel in distress. As you start approaching Kelly, you hear her muttering "They are gone. They are all gone. What am I supposed to do now?!" and she starts crying again. You sit beside her, offer her your not so clean handkerchief and ask her what's wrong. Through tears you find out that someone broke into her room and stole all her future quests.
"All future quests?! But how's that possible? There are no thieves in Novel Kingdom! I'll help you Lady Kelly. Don't worry, you'll have your quests back!?" you yell and storm out of Tavern to find a thief.

To find Lady Kelly's quests read 2 books where someone steals something and 2 books where someone finds something. (use your imagination ☺)
Lady Kelly will gladly pay 10 gold for her missing quests.

You walk into the square and see Lady Zuzana waiving her hands around trying to communicate with the merchant. You come closer and hear: "Do you speak English?" Merchant stares confused. "Mluvíš česky?" Still nothing. "Parlez-vous français?" Nothing. "Sprechen Sie Deutsch? Parla italiano? Fala português? ¿Habla usted español? Вы говорите по-русски? Govorite li hrvatski? Talar þú íslensku? Spreekt u Nederlands? Μιλάτε Ελληνικά;..." Lady Zuzana tries many different languages, but merchant still doesn't understand her.

To help Lady Zuzana in her communication with the merchant, read 2 books originally written in your native language and 2 books originally written in another language. Lady Zuzana will gladly pay 10 gold to find common language.

Minding your business you slowly stroll on the square and see Ser Amanda looking at the notice board. You're pretty interested what is she looking at cause it could be new quest for you. You come closer and look at the paper. Something is written on it but it doesn't make much sense to you. You look at Ser Amanda quizzically. "I found it under the door this morning and can't figure out what it says so I decided to put it here and maybe someone will be able to solve it." You're pretty intrigued now about what that note says and decide to give it a try.

Lady Rachel's Debut

The local theatre offers an open practice session to allow Novelarians the chance to see free performances and the actors the chance to practice in front of a live audience. You saunter in to get out of the sweltering heat outside and start to eat your giant turkey leg and side of tomato. Lady Rachel is up on the stage facing a grubby little trained pet goblin when she trips over her skirt and falls backwards. The director yells at her, "You're supposed to kill the goblin! Not the other way around!" Both Lady Rachel and the goblin stare at the director. Seeing the opportunity to help, you jump up (spilling your turkey leg and tomato onto the floor) and announce that you know how to make a great goblin sword that can easily pretend to smite a pet goblin. Running out of the room you go and search for the materials.

Gather 3 goblin bones then read a book with a grey cover to gather the metal then forge the metal and goblin bones together with a book that has fire (exact word, though may be part of a larger word) in the title or series. The director will gladly pay you 10 gold for setting the show back on track.

Search for Spock in the Hearts of Men - Read 3 books about sports, dogs or food.
Search for Spock in our Memories - Read 3 books about history or set in the past.

Search 1 location to gain 3 experience.
Search a second location to gain an additional 4 experience.
Search a third location to gain an additional 5 experience.
Search the final location to recover Spock's lost Plasma weapon. There is only one charge left but it may be used as a instant (no battle turn used) attack of 10 points.

March monster killing

I show my Level 4 sword to the rat and he falls over dead. DEAD. +1XP, Next available 3/11/2015, 12HP, 83XP

Filled with bloodlust, I spot a brown bat
and go after him with my Level 5 Magic Staff.
15 HP - 7 HP from my staff = 8HP for the bat.
The bat strikes back. 12HP - 3 attack = 9HP for me.
I attack the bat AGAIN with my staff and his HP drops to 1. He counters with another 3 attack, bringing me down to 6HP. I finish him off with another strike of the staff for 1XP and a bat wing.
