Jay | 29 comments Personally, I think short stories are delightful and extraordinary in the sense that the authors are able to convey the themes and plots to the readers in such a short amount of pages. To be able to touch the readers' emotions with a limited amount of words, I've found that extremely intriguing.

Excellent point, Jay! Typical novels these days tend to be around 300 pages. Writing short stories or novellas takes a different, special kind of talent to fit everything necessary into the story by the end and have it all work well.

Jay | 29 comments That's very true, Samantha. Plus, good short stories might help take the reader out of a book slump too. A novella that made me change my mind about short stories was White Nights by Dostoevsky.

So many emotions in less than 80 pages. It is on the top of my recommendation list.

Bernard Smith | 126 comments I started on short stories (Janet and John, Noddy, etc), and then progressed to SF shorts as a teen. As an adult I have branched out into all genres. As an ancient adult I can no longer concentrate on a full length novel.

How do you feel about short story collections, Bernard?

Bernard Smith | 126 comments Well Samantha, the stories are usually in collections, unless published singly in a magazine. It is good to explore the imaginations of writers such as Ray Bradbury and M R James.
