Temidayo Azeez (brainiedude) | 9 comments Now my story: I'm a short story writer, and as you all know, it kinda very difficult getting published in literary magazines. I hope to build my reputation off getting published in literary magazine.

As regards to the relative difficulty in getting published in literary magazine, I sort becoming a volunteer reader. Currently, Carve magazine is seeking volunteer readers. The next thing is to submit my application.

They demand a CV/Resume
They demand also I understand their aesthetic and style.

Now my problem with this two demands is, firstly, I don't have a CV tailored for application to a magazine. I'm currently an undergraduate in Economics and all I can boast of in terms of formal education in English is an O level (by west African standard) and a EF SET English Certificatez and I currently belong to a critique group-- Scribophile. So I would need advice on how to put together and structure a CV that can submitted for this application. Any advise in terms of this would be accepted.

As regards to the second requirement, I wonder what a magazine mean when they talk about their aesthetic and style. I have read stories published online by Carve. And I have seen different writing style from different authors, some of the fiction dark, mysterious, humor, and all that. In terms of theme, I have not found anything unifying in all of thier publication. So I'm really worried and wondering what those two words actually mean.

Lastly, if you know of any magazine seeking volunteer readers, I would be more than willing to be a part of the team. So all suggestions regarding this would be highly welcome too.

Please every assistance would be appreciated. Please do endeavour to reach out and drop whatever token from your pool of knowledge. Thanks.

Hannah | 23 comments In terms of aesthetic and style, it doesn't necessarily have to be a specific theme or genre. Usually you just want to ask yourself a lot of questions about the magazine itself. If they print copies of their magazine, find a few of those and ask yourself how do they physically lay out the stories in the magazine? What kinds of backgrounds or extra graphic details are in the layouts? As for the stories, how long are the stories they choose on average? Do they prefer a certain style of writing, literary or casual or poetic or abrupt? Do they have a mission statement, some goal they're trying to achieve?

I don't know anything about Carve magazine or the other questions you asked but thought I might be able to help with that one question. Good luck!
