Phasmophobia is a new and upcoming indie horror game. It is still in development, but entered early access in September and can already be bought and played via Steam. Like many or most indie games, it is based on the Unity engine and offers VR support as well.
In terms of gameplay, Phasmophobia is a full-blooded ghosthunting simulator. You and up to three friends of yours form a team of paranormal investigators and have to complete different research tasks in and around haunted locations, like finding cold spot anomalies, taking photographs of ghosts or performing exorcism rites. The main task is usually to determine the identity of the ghost and classify it properly.
Personally, I have to admit I am more of an UFO and cryptids guy, but I think the portrayal of ghosthunting and the tools of the trade are rather realistic, although I find it a bit strange the ghost/spirits are always supposed to react to human names, no matter if they are jinns, demons or indeed the spirits of the dead.
Phasmophobia uses microphone input and voice/speech recognition. You can try to contact the ghost using a ghostbox, but also accidently anger it by using its name in a careless manner. The maps seem to be essentially preset or preexisting, but some elements, like the nature of the ghost, the room of its main activity and the exact location of the breaker box (They LOVE to turn off the lights!) seem to be randomized in each game, which guarantees a high replayability.... and unpredictability.
Admittedly, Phasmophobia is one of the more ugly-looking video games using the Unity engine, but the gameplay compensates for it full term. As mentioned before, it is still in early access and worked upon. I'd strongly recommend to play this game in a team, although singleplayer is also possible. It is just much easier to split tasks between reliable friends and companions than playing a lone paranormal investigator.
