For our final book for 2020, we will be reading the YA rom-com When Dimple Met Rishi. This book has been on our tbr list for a very long time, and now that the Netflix adaptation of it has released, we thought it would be a good time to read it.

Let us know your thoughts on the book in the comments below.

Fatima Moosa (fatimamoosa) | 2 comments I really enjoyed the book. The entire series is one of my favourite #OwnVoices books. It was just such an adorable book. I remember I felt like squealing at some parts of this book when I was reading it. Also it gets 5/5 for a lovely brown romcom filled with representation. It wasn't perfect but on the whole it was a lovely book. And again I just love the other titles in the series.

But that Netflix adaptation was badly done and relied on too many problematic tropes and didn't work with the great source material from the book.

Julie (3x5books) | 31 comments This was a sweet way to end the year and I enjoyed revisiting the first installment of the series. I was definitely smiling while running errands and listening to the audiobook (not that anyone could tell 😷) .

Cute, with a lot of good conversations about love, marriage, dreams.

I enjoyed closing out the year with a light YA rom-com. Overall, I liked the development of Dimple and Rishi's relationship arc, from "enemies" to soft-of-friends to a romantic couple. It was nice to see how Dimple and Rishi challenged each other's perspective and values while helping the other be a better version of themselves. I think that kind of trust and support is more compelling to me than any of the romantic scenes in this book. The dual narrative was a good tool for comedic moments. I was cringing and laughing during the not-date scene.

I thought Sandhya did a good job portraying a realistic teen romance set right before college.

Marvin and I mention this in our episode, but we both wished that there was a final presentation scene where all the coders present their apps. It would have been great to see Dimple in her coder element and show her passion to the judges.
