Closer, closer and no, I didn't read it in one day (20 hours since my last post in this thread)- I was reading it for quite a while...

Martin | 3 comments I think I will try this challenge as my very first. Medium (light) seems doable while I won't add the 4 extra German letters (especially considering there is no single word starting with 'ß').

x B - Blue Beam Project (14.08.2021)
C -
D - Drachenbrut
x E - Exogenisis (Prometheus #3) (22.08.2021)
x F - Die Fehde der Magier (04.09.2021)
G - The Gospel of Loki (incredible exited for this one) (31.12.21: almost finished, only about 20 pages to go)
x H - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (7.11.2021)
I - Invasion
x J - James Joyce. Portrait eines Dubliners (13.08.2021)

Q -
x R - Ready Player One (18.10.2021)
x S - The Space Between Worlds (01.10.2021)
T - The Theory of Everything: The Origin and Fate of the Universe (read half of it, but had to return it to the library before i got to finish)
x U - Schatten über Ulldart (22.12.2021)
V - Vorsehung (Prometheus #12)
x W - wake up (25.10.2021)

Z - Die Zitadelle (Prometheus #20)

(Goal: 23)

I hope I am doing this whole thing right haha. Now I have to add all those books two the shelf that I create while signing up for the challenge, right?

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Yes, you can add the books now if you're sure these are the books you'll be reading, or add them as you start/finish reading them :)

CBRetriever | 6117 comments Finished reading Adventures of a Dwergish Girl by Daniel Pinkwater for P in authors as well as for the TBR challenge

Alpha Author: A, B, C, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, X, Y & Z = 23 out of 26

I'm currently working on Oath of Fealty by Elizabeth Moon for M in Authors and Apocalypse Nyx by Kameron Hurley for A in Titles

Adventures of a Dwergish Girl by Daniel Pinkwater was very, very YA but as it was free from Tor, I downloaded it and read it. It probably would absolutely enthrall a middle-schoolder

Eva | 968 comments Update:

Medium Mode Authors - A, B, C, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, O, P, R, S, T, W

Medium Mode Titles - A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, L, M, N, O, P, S, T, U, V, X, W, Z
(Illuminae, Velocity Weapon, Six Crimson Cranes)

Numbers - 0, 1, 6, 7, 9 (Six Crimson Cranes)
Bonus Numbers: 32, 40

For X, I've decided to relax my own personal rules a bit so that the letter can be anywhere in the title or name, and doesn't have to be at the beginning. So I'm counting Six Crimson Cranes for my X-Title (otherwise it just becomes too contrived and would force me to buy and read stuff I've never actually wanted to read).

Kai Raine | 3 comments Am going to try this on medium mode, but will also try doing the Japanese alphabet (kana system) in author mode? Will have to make exceptions for certain letters (nothing starts with を or ん), but....will try!

Edit: Bolding books I have finished reading so that I can list the books on my TBR list that I can use to fill these! :D

Medium mode:

Kana author mode:(view spoiler)

I can actually think of some authors for

を: David Wong, Tao Wong, Meg Wolitzer

and

ん: Jeannette Ng, Natasha Ngan, Siphiwe Gloria Ndlovu, Marie NDiaye, Celeste Ng, Viet Thanh Nguyen

So there's no need to leave these out. :-)

CBRetriever | 6117 comments I'm starting to tally up my Scrabble mode titles - quite an undertaking as I'm trying not to do the books that have this sort of title

The Year's Best Military SF & Space Opera (The Year's Best of Military and Adventure Science Fiction Stories Book 1)

or this one

The Dragonback Series Books 4-6: Dragon and Herdsman, Dragon and Judge, Dragon and Liberator

message 376: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments I’ve been meaning to ask if anyone is doing Scrabble! I have a spreadsheet, because of course I do, where I’ll copy paste all my read titles at the end of the year to see which ones have most of each letter.

Actually, even people who haven’t partipated in ABC can still do Scrabble at the last minute! Maybe I’ll have to make a spreadsheet everyone can use to check their points. Unless someone has already made one and wants to share? 😊

message 377: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6117 comments That might be useful. I've made it to the point of determining which books I'll use for each letter, now I need to total the points per book and for that letter and create a:

Letter = Count = Points = Title

listing. also did this for my Unread SF&F books and found a couple of books that will increase my score if I read them before then end of the year

message 378: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Do we want to count a/an/the towards Scrabble? It only affects five letters, so I guess we could go either way? A, E, N, T are all just 1 point, so it really doesn't matter, but H is 4 points, so it might make a difference.

I guess for the sake of simplicity/laziness, let's not care about that :D

message 379: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6117 comments as your example counts the a in and, I'm going for the entire title, minus the Book X in Series Y bit

message 380: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Yeah I think it's easier to just keep it simple :)

Gabi | 3441 comments Wow! Congratulations, Anna! I admire your endurance. I miserably failed this year at every challenge I set myself.

message 385: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments I pretty much finished the challenge in July, it was just that one 550 page eye-book that was left, and then an easy 200 page kids' book after that, so I knew I could do it. Picking such a massive eye-read for a challenge when you're not eye-reading almost at all was not a good choice :D But on the other hand, I don't think I would've read it this year if it wasn't for the challenge, so maybe it wasn't so bad after all :)

(Not looking forward to trying to finish RATB this year, December is going to be hellish.)

Well I'll have to admit that I said a challenge to read 20 books and I'm already at 40 books read. Might be able to get 45 in. Happy ThanksGiving my friends here in the USA. As for all my friends have a Blessed day and Remember that God Is Good.

message 387: by Tamara (last edited Nov 26, 2021 05:04PM) (new)

Tamara | 271 comments I'm doing Medium Mode/MM Light (but it's a bit moot, since I'm not going to finish the challenge to the point of getting to X anyway...). I've gotten through a few letters:

A – The Awakening
B – The Book of Three
D – Dragonsbane
E – The Enchanted (Cecilia Dart-Thornton)
F – Fate of the Fallen
H – The Hail Mary Project
M – The Mortal Word
P – The Paris Library
S – Starsight
U – The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep
W – The Way of Kings (currently reading Part 1)

I might be able to add 'L', if I get The Last Graduate next. I've read a few same-letter books, of course. M, A, D, and S seem to be popular.

The author version of this challenge might be good to try.

message 388: by Tamara (new)

Tamara | 271 comments Actually, I only get 9 letters if I do the Author version 😞 😄. But I do pick up C and N ✊

message 389: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments You can continue next year if you want to! :)

message 390: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 1405 comments I gave up on this challenge half way through the year when I realized everything I was reading started with the same 7 or so letters! Had never noticed how popular certain letters are.

message 391: by DivaDiane (last edited Nov 29, 2021 07:40AM) (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments December is almost upon us and I've had a bit of a reckoning with this challenge. I have not been doing very well reading the books I chose for each letter (even though I chose several books for each!). So I went through the books I have read this year to see if there were any I could plug into the challenge and see how many I have left. So:

F - Fate of the Fallen
P - Project Hail Mary
Q - The Quantum Magician
S - Die Stadt der Träumenden Bücher (the City of Dreaming Books, which I read in German)
T - Trash Mountain
U - Under the Whispering Door
V - Vicky Finds a Valentine

That leaves me with just G, J, K, and Z for 22/26 for the Title challenge. A couple of the books are shorter ones, so I may make it, but I kind of doubt it.

For the Authors Challenge, it's a bit worse. I have B, F, G, J, M, Q, T, V, X and Z left.

message 392: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Four letters doesn't sound too bad, if they're books you're actually interested in!

message 393: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 693 comments Done:
Book: A, B, C, D, E, H,I, K, L, M, N, P, R S, U, V, W, Y

Neeed F, G, J, O, Q, T, X. Z

I have a J and a T done, but they were mysteries, so I will only count them if I have to. Currently reading both One of Our Thursdays Is Missing and The Zenith. After that is The Quiet Invasion and Xanadu

Authors:
Done: A, B, C, D, G, H, J, K, L, M, R, S, T, W, Z
Need: E, F, I, N, O, P, Q, U, V, X, Y....f and y will be done via the plan above
so, I dont thinkk I will quite it...maybe I will snaek in some short stories

Zero Gee is a short story in The Best of Bova: Volume 1 by Ben Bova
Six from Atlantis in The Sword & Sorcery Anthology
Seven in the Unfettered III: New Tales By Masters of Fantasy Anthology

Xia Jia in Best Science Fiction of the Year Volume 2

I ended up reading less fiction this year than usual, thanks to the exciting new world of K-Dramas, which supplied my story fix for the first few months. 😄😏
