Not my favorite HPL story, but still a good'un.

I agree Jon

message 53: by Char (new)

Char | 17465 comments I would say the same, not my favorite, but still enjoyable.

Why don't one of you guys pick the next one? Any suggestions? I should be able to participate unless it's novel length.

How about a paired story read?

THE HAUNTER OF THE DARK by Lovecraft, and
THE SHADOW FROM THE STEEPLE by Robert Bloch

Lovecraft dedicates his story to his young fan and kills him off.
Bloch returns the favor.

The copy I have is a kindle version that comes with audio listening. Some are straight up narration while others are more if the radio play variety. The narration I listened to seemed ok but I have to admit that I didn't listen to all of them as I prefer to read. I tend to wander off if I'm just lustening :)

Tom | 340 comments You guys must be like "What is he talking about?" I actually am reading The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Oops! Thats why you all finished so quick. Well I am going to continue with this one (it's longer) and play catch up with Arthur after I finish

LOL Oh, okay. I was wondering what you were talking about. I just read that one last month. I hope you enjoy it, Tom! :)

That would work if I could find a copy of The Shadow From the Steeple and it doesn't cost $100.00. :)

John (frayerbanac) | 336 comments Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos by H.P. Lovecraft and others. Amazon Books. Cheap as chips.

message 62: by Char (new)

Char | 17465 comments I have pretty much all of Lovecraft.

I might have the Bloch in one of my anthologies/collections.

John (frayerbanac) | 336 comments Okay. If not, check Amazon. There are some used copies available. Good luck! It's definitely worth a read!

How about some dear beloved Ambrose Bierce? Most of his stuff is public domain as well.

I'm a huge Bierce fan!

message 67: by Char (new)

Char | 17465 comments I would like to read some Bierce too. What story could we do? I'm not familiar with his work at all.

message 68: by Nickronomicon (new)

Nickronomicon | 179 comments I just found something interesting. Seems that The Haunter of the Dark is a sequel to a story by Robert Bloch called The Shambler from the Stars and The Shadow from the Steeple makes it a trilogy. Now I HAVE to read them all, IN ORDER! haha
Are any of Bloch's stories in the public domain? I'm not finding anything online....

Kirstin | 417 comments I just read this one and I thought it was ok. My first Lovecraft story. The ending was a bit predictable but still made for a good story. (view spoiler)

Kirstin, I appreciate where you're coming from. This story is not indicative of Lovecraft's work overall. I hope you'll continue to try out some of his other stories in the future.

Charlene wrote: "I would like to read some Bierce too. What story could we do? I'm not familiar with his work at all."

AN OCCURRENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE

THE DAMNED THING

He wrote horror, Civil War stories and "fables" that were criminally politically incorrect.

For sure, Charlene! I have his whole works! :) That statement wasn't coming from me!! Just my thought on the story...

Ooh, I like the titles of those, Jon. Let me check 'em out. :)

Hoff The Librarian (hoffthelibrarian) | 20 comments I cannot pass up Lovecraft no matter how many times I read it.

That said, while I thought it was very solid, it wasn't one of my favorites. Lovecraft seems at his best when he's approximating the texture of the creeping darkness as it closes in, not trying to lead us through a plot based arc that doesn't allow him to paint the scene. For instance, Colour Out of Space kills it in that regard. His description of the menace advancing on the family is full of dread, but also a textured description.

Still, I'm glad I read it and would be up for more!

the first story I read was An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. I read it in high school English class and I never forgot it. The Death of Halpin Frayser has a great dream sequence, love it! i'll read any of them! I think I've read most of his supernatural stories but they are all so good i'll read them again.
