What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Her sister, a high level, has been developing a school for the magicless kids. The main character is taken there and learns to defend herself from monsters and also that cooking doesn’t have to be an exact science, unlike the way she’s learned from her mother. I read this around 2014 and it was a stand-alone at the time. The way it ended implied it would be a series. This book was in my middle school library and I really liked it! Just remembered it and now it’s driving me crazy. I’d love to read more if the series was continued. I’d estimate it was published sometime after 2010. The magic test for kids to find their level was walking through some sort of door or veil. She couldn’t go through. SPOILER BELOW








I believe monsters attacked the school at the end and kidnapped a few students. They want to find their friends and it leaves on a bit of a cliffhanger.
