Book: Prisoner's Base by Rex Stout
Date Completed: 1/6/21
I find myself craving things that are familiar right now, and turned to an old and comfortable setting in the old brownstone of Nero Wolfe on West Thirty-Fifth Street. This is not my favorite story of the series, but I enjoyed the renewed connection with Nero, Archie, Fritz, and the other inhabitants of Rex Stout's World. I have found a few other titles in the series that I have not yet read and plan to continue for now.

Prompt 32: The first book in a series you have not read before.
Book: A Lady's Guide to Etiquette and Murder by Dianne Freeman

A fun read! I thought I had this one solved, but I was oh so wrong! I love when that happens! :-D

Prompt 9. A book with an animal on the cover or in the title.
Book: Thrice the Brinded Cat Hath Mew'd by Alan Bradley

Picture of a tabby cat.

This series is one of my favorites for fun, charm, and quirky small-town village life. And I will add, that this book is one of the best of the series. I am ready to jump into the next adventure with Flavia, Dogger, and Gladys her trusty bicycle!

Prompt 10. A book randomly selected from your historical mystery TBR
I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that through a life-time love of mysteries inspired by Agatha Christie...I have never actually read any of her books! So, without further ado, I will be reading Agatha Christie's debut novel featuring Hercule Poirot.
Book: The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie

I listened to the audio edition of her stand-alone They Came to Baghdad, which exceeded my expectation!

I wasn't sure what to expect in actually reading an Agatha Christie mystery; all of my experience has movies and TV. A small part of me was afraid I would be disappointed or the language would feel heavy a burden. But, this was an enjoyable read. I was caught up in the story and characters from the start and was not disappointed that I could not guess the villain. My only critique was the final dialogue by Poirot connecting (or justifying) all the fine points. But overall, thoroughly content.

Prompt 18. A book set in the '20s of any century (except the 21st)
Book: The Pirate King by Laurie R. King
Date Completed: 4/5/21
Thoroughly enjoyed this adventure, as always. I didn't want it to end..."Please sir, may I have some more!" ;)

Kerri; Your post reminded me that I haven't read any Agatha Christie since the 1960's & 70's! The Mysterious Affair at Styles would be a great one for a repeat read. Glad you enjoyed!

Prompt 52. A book with water on the cover
Book: Death on the Riviera by Jonh Bude

(This could also work for prompt 28 A book by an author who uses a pseudonym.)
Date Completed: 4/14/21

Prompt 24. A book set in a religious setting (convent, abbey, vicarage, temple, shrine, etc.)

Jane and the Ghosts of Netley by Stephanie Barron
Date Completed: 05/31/21
It has been quite a long while since I last read any of this series, and I am really glad to get back to it. This is a well-written, clever mystery with a few surprises along the way. I truly enjoy Jane Austen as a lively and clever female sleuth.

Prompt 13: A book with a female detective

Flavia de Luce, a precocious female detective with a passion for poison. It took a while for the mystery to get started in this one, but once it did, events moved at a rapid pace.
Date Completed: 07/20/21

Book: And Four To Go by Rex Stout.

Not my favorite of this series. 4 short-story mysteries all solved within a day. Having Wolfe out of the brownstone and even as a suspect in 2 of the stories kept it interesting, but then the 2 most captivating mysteries were very similar in nature and motive. 3 stars.
Date Completed: 08/08/2021

Prompt 6: a locked room mystery.

Book: And Then There Were None (Previously published as Ten Little Indians) by Agatha Christie.
Date completed: 08/15/2021
This is the second of Christie's mysteries that I have actually read and I am finally understanding our fascination with her stories. As with the first one I read earlier this year, I was expecting to be moderately entertained, especially since I had seen the movie years ago. But, I was captivated from the first paragraph and found myself seeking extra reading times to finish. I was hoping for a bit more drama with the last chapter, but thoroughly surprised and satisfied with the final conclusion. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

And Dangerous to Know by Darcie Wilde a pseudonym for Sarah Zettel.
Date Completed:08/31/21
Not my favorite of the series. The mystery was well done, but I felt Rosalind was less confident of herself and her role in this one.
3 stars.

The Case of the Left-Handed Lady: Enola Holmes Mystery Series, Book 2 by Nancy Springer.
Date Completed: 10/3/21
Charming and delightful YA series with a refreshing spin on the Great Detective.

Prompt 21. A cozy historical mystery

The Ghost and Mrs. Jeffries
Date Completed: 10/24/21
This was an ok read for me. I have tried the Mrs. Jefferies series before with little enthusiasm to continue but I was looking for a light read and thought I would give it another chance. While I can see the appeal for those who enjoy the Upstairs-Downstairs life of the Victorian era, this is not for me. 3 stars.

Prompt 29. A book with a title that includes a character's name.

Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty, a fairytale-type mystery for middle-grade readers. I have been looking for a light magical mystery that fits the season...hoping this is it!
Date Completed: 10/31/2021
This is a win! The concept is unique, the story well written, and while classified for middle-grade readers, adults will enjoy this, too. I will definitely be continuing this series.

22. A book with gothic elements

The Moor by Laurie R. King
Date Completed: 11/14/21
This was a re-read with a gap of more than 10 years. I had forgotten so much of the story that it was like a first-time read, and I enjoyed it much more this round. I think the timing of the season with dark, misty, and rainy mornings helped! :) 3.5 stars.
