Nike | 117 comments What do you mean by Retelling?

message 15: by Diane , Armchair Tour Guide (new)

Diane | 13052 comments Nike wrote: "What do you mean by Retelling?"

A new twist to an old story. For example, there are a lot of books based on fairy tales or on classic literature plots.

message 18: by Viji (new)

Viji | 85 comments Need help with the following:

Desert,Ocean or Mountains
should any of these feature on the cover or the book should be set in any/all the three of them?

Book suggestions/links (fiction) for the following would be much appreciated:

Nature Theme
Translated from Arabic
Vietnamese Author
Set on or about The Silk Road

Thanks.

message 19: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 25 comments Nike wrote: "What do you mean by Retelling?"

My favorite retelling is Circe by Madeline Miller. Circe was a character in the Odyssey, and other greek mythology and art. Miller gives her a whole new life, and gives us a new perspective on other myths (such as Icarus).

There are a lot of Pride and Prejudice retellings, and updated fairytales.

Here's a list based on how people shelved the books.

I agree with Circe (and also The Song of Achilles) as far as Greek myth retellings being absolutely amazing.
I would also add Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier, the retelling of a Celtic myth (which was also co-opted by the Brothers Grimm as "The Six Swans") which is a wonderfully written book!

message 25: by Jovan (new)

message 26: by Frida (new)

Frida (butthenyouread) Hi! Do we need to sign up anywhere to do this challenge, or do we just go ahead with it?

message 27: by Jovan (new)

Jovan (iovan) | 181 comments I believe you should click on the second row of this page Magic Squares 2020 ~ Magic Squares 2021 and then click on new topic. You should name new topic accordingly, in your case Frida 2021 MSq or similar and read books and comment on what you read. Check with Diane, but I think this is it.

message 28: by Linda C (new)

Linda | 7 comments Hi guys! I don't know if I have to ask for permission as I did not see anything speaking against it in the Rules and signing up is also not required but I wanted to ask if its okay if me and my friends do this as a Team challenge (we split up the grid) in the same Thread? I already set one up - if it's not okay please do let me know! Thank you!!
