It was near impossible to choose just three but here they are:
Gone are the Leaves by Anne Donovan
Such a gorgeously beautiful book, written in Scots. I loved the language, the characters, the places, the seasons, the plot. Everything.
His Bloody Project: Documents Relating to the Case of Roderick Macrae by Graeme Macrae Burnet
A popular book in the group, such an excellent read! This book delves deep into Scottish rural life of the past, and the seemingly small things that lead up to a big murderous event. Wonderfully written too.
Gillespie and I by Jane Harris
Last but not least - I adore this book! I’m not sure why, it’s not that famous, but it’s one of my all time favourites :) Maybe it’s because this book utterly tricked me - I can’t say more without giving something away...

I agree with the first two but not "Gillespie and I".
The absolute must read Scottish books are James Hogg's "Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner" and Lewis Grassic Gibbon's "Sunset Song."

I see you've gone for real classics. I really must get round to reading these two :)

The sequel, MANNAHATTA, will be out in the spring, 2021.

Sounds interesting. I will add it to my TBR list.

1. Lanark by Alasdair Gray
Lanark is mind blowing, a mess of a book, shards of biography and science fiction, chopped up in time and space. Gray's work is never easy-going but its worth it.
2. The Bridge by Iain Banks
A very scottish novel, layers of meaning, very stylish. Banks is very sorely missed.
3. A Scots Quair by Lewis Grassic Gibbon
A trilogy of books of a family's life. This is a beautiful, touching, unsentimental, political work, full of life, death and ghosts in the landscape.

Thank you! I hope you are well :)

What are the best Scotland related books you’ve ever read or are keen for others to read?
You can recommend up to three books each and add a wee explanation as to why they’re so great. I’m also allowing authors to post their own books here too.
