I am a bit the same. I guess fantasy takes you to new and exciting places when you are younger and you lose a bit of the bright eyed view as you age. Got a bit sick of all the Arthurian legend stuff going around and moved on. Your review suggests I should have a go again. Thanks

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9976 comments I was lucky enough to get an early read of Derek B. Miller’s sixth novel, How to Find Your Way in the Dark and have sat, impatiently, on my review it for some eighteen months. I’m so pleased that soon (July 27th) other fans of that somewhat cranky old man from his first novel, Sheldon Horowitz, will get to read about his early life and find out what went into making that man. After a read of the final version via NetGalley, I can confirm that it’s exciting, moving, insightful and hugely entertaining: probably Miller’s best yet.

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments The title story of These Precious Days: Essays, by Ann Patchett is a novella-length essay about her amazing and unexpected friendship with an artist who is a personal assistant to Tom Hanks.

The book itself is due out in November - here's a link to the story, free online.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9976 comments I see plenty of high ratings for Kirsty Manning's latest novel, The French Gift, but it just didn't grab me. Fans of historical fiction may have a different reaction.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9976 comments Because You're Mine by Swedish author, Luna Miller is the second book in her Gunvor Ström series, which features an ex-surgeon PI in her sixties. I would say this one is as good as #1, and I hope Luna is working on #3.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9976 comments I love the audio versions of Kate Atkinson's books, and Nicholas Bell's narration of Started Early, Took My Dog is good EXCEPT that he mispronounces Niamh (as in nee-arm) multiple times. It grated on me so Irish readers would be likely asking for a refund. Luckily Atkinson's brilliant prose allows me to forgive this. But would you not find out how to pronounce an Irish name if you're narrating a whole book?
5★s for Atkinson's excellent prose.

Carolyn | 9840 comments The Radio Operator by Ulla Lenze The Radio Operator by Ulla Lenze is based on a true story of a young German immigrant who was unwittingly coerced into acting as a radio operator for a German spy ring in America just before the US entered WW2, and suffered the consequences. It was interesting from a historical perspective but a bit flat in drama.
