Paige (paigemaster91) Hi Everybody,
My name is Paige, and I’ve never played uno before! I just joined this group in late 2020 with my aunt. I read pretty much anything, my preferences are historical fiction, and stories with struggles is the best way to put it ( Ellen Hopkins-ish, Go Ask Alice, A Child Called It). But I’m game for anything!! I can’t wait to play! So how does this work do I have to be chosen on a time or are teams assigned randomly?

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Hey Mods,

Is it still the 50% Tin Eye rule for colours this year? Or Captain's Call?

Thought I'd just check before I start getting a head's up on the colour covers. Searching for those tricky ones is the best UNO fun!

message 53: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 871 comments I can answer you Lisa.

We do not rely on Tin Eye this year...

It is a Captain's call, and if the Captain isn't sure, they ask the other captains.

Preeti (preetisunaina) | 480 comments Hi. My name is Preeti and I live in India. I have played UNO in the past but old age seems to be catching up and I can't remember just how many times. However more importantly what I do remember is that I had a blast of a time and know that I will this time too.

The genres I read used to be a lot more limited before I started taking part in reading challenges. I love that as a result of them I have been introduced to many more genres, authors, books and have discovered new favourites.
There are very few genres I will not read. I am always willing to give every book a try. Having said that, romance is a genre I still find difficult, particularly contemporary romance. But I will never completely say no to it as I have read some that pleasantly surprised me.

I have way too many books that I want to read in 2021 to list here.

Some of the books I have loved:

Blue
Life of Pi by Yann Martel Lock Every Door by Riley Sager The Child Finder (Naomi Cottle, #1) by Rene Denfeld The Night Manager by John le Carré Frostheart (Frostheart, #1) by Jamie Littler On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More by Roald Dahl The Night Watch by Sarah Waters The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr The North Water by Ian McGuire The Polar Bear Explorers' Club by Alex Bell All Things Bright and Strange by James Markert Truly Devious (Truly Devious, #1) by Maureen Johnson A Boy Called Christmas (Christmas, #1) by Matt Haig

Green
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce, #1) by Alan Bradley The House Girl by Tara Conklin The Hand on the Wall (Truly Devious, #3) by Maureen Johnson

Yellow
The Tiger's Wife by Téa Obreht The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate (Calpurnia Tate #1) by Jacqueline Kelly The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 by Cho Nam-Joo

Red
Elizabeth and Her German Garden by Elizabeth von Arnim All of Me by Venita Coelho Monday's Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark Elizabeth Is Missing by Emma Healey Bunny by Mona Awad The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson The Girl Who Saved Christmas (Christmas, #2) by Matt Haig

I am very much looking forward to this challenge. See you all there.

Entry forms will be available on 14 Jan - so in 5 more days. You fill that form out and then you will be assigned to a team before the end of the month. UNO Starts on February 1st...

@ Paige - if I remember rightly there should be a space on the application form (14 Jan) asking who else you want to be with, on the same team - you list their name there. The mods will do their best. Since there are only the two of you, it should not be too much of a problem - but no guarantees.

message 63: by UNO Pixie, Our UNO Helper (new)

UNO Pixie | 1839 comments We are going to give you all a head start on sign ups seeing that you are super keen and made your way to this chat thread!

A sign up announcement will go out on the 14th, but here are the details for you all early.

Please remember to read the rules and commit to the challenge for 3 months. That is Feb 1 - April 30. You will need to be active on goodreads at least once per week during this period.

3d-fonts

Fill out this SIGN UP FORM with a few details and we will start assigning teams the second last week of January. You will need to "check in" to your team thread by January 25 or you will be replaced
If you have problems with the form, please let us know.
===
SPECIAL NOTE: If you signed up last year, but were replaced because the captain did not hear from you, or you withdrew from the challenge, you will need to send a message to the Pixie account as to what has changed this year. Your sign up will get flagged and you will not be placed in a team unless you message us first.
===
You can see if your form responses worked, and check out who else has signed up here

***********************

3d-fonts
◈ Every month when the team gets their monthly UNO hands the Captain will need to work with the team to create a plan for how to read the hands. We will provide you with a spreadsheet to complete.
◈ We would expect the captains to track the teams books
◈ At the end of each month the Captain will need to check their teams books are marked as "read" and meet the page counts and submit their team's info to the moderator to have points confirmed

message 64: by UNO Pixie, Our UNO Helper (new)

UNO Pixie | 1839 comments Tips to prepare for sign up

* Think about how many books you can read in a month.
There is no benefit in UNO to under-estimate because each team has a fixed number of books to read each month. It is best to be as accurate as you can so that your team doesn't finish the month early and then is bored for a week!. Have a look at what you read over the last 3 months, or for previous players what you read over last UNO.

* Do you want to be in a "chatty" team?
Consider your interaction on Goodreads. Do you want to log in at least every other day? If so you may want to select your preference for a "chatty team".
If you can only commit to checking the team once per week, a chatty team is not for you.
If you don't think you can make it onto Goodreads once per week (even if you haven't read anything) then UNO is not for you.

* Set up your UNO Shelf.
This helps your team captains check your books, and is also quite cool later when you want to see what you have read in UNO over the years. Goodreads help explains how to add a new shelf if you haven't done it before here

YOUR USER NAME IS VERY IMPORTANT
every year we have sign-ups that don't get this right. If you do not enter it correctly, we can not find you, which means you won't be placed on a team.

To find your user name:,
1. go to the desktop version of Goodreads. This means use a web browser on your tablet/phone/computer to go to www.goodeads.com
2. (sign in if required) Look at the top right hand side and you will see the far right circle that is your profile picture. Click on it, and then select "profile"
3. What you now see in the URL bar is not www.goodeads.com but instead your profile name. For example, this Pixie account shows www.goodreads.com/user/show/52624155-...
This means my user name is 52624155-uno-pixie
4. In the sign up form you will be asked to enter the number and the name separately (this helps with our formulas and to make sure people enter this information correctly). So my number would be 52624155 and my name would be uno-pixie

message 65: by Robynne (new)

Robynne Lozier @ Paige

As you can see the sign up form (what I called the application form) is now available. There is no specific request for teammates, but there IS A space for anything else you want to add. So I would suggest that you add a note in that space that you want to be on the same team as your aunt - best to include her Goodreads ID - name and number as well. She needs to the same adding your ID name & number when she signs up as well. HTH

Name - Sally - I live in Australia

Team Challenge experience - lots, I may be a bit of an addict 😂😂
I stick with my team to the end - no dropping out and leaving the team in the lurch - not my style.

Have you joined UNO before? Yes a few times - not last year.

Favourite genres - fairly eclectic - lean towards cosy mysteries, paranormal romances and middle School/YA

Book you can't wait to read in 2021 - Yours Cheerfully A Novel by A.J. Pearce Yours Cheerfully: A Novel is on my list, sequel to Dear Mrs. Bird by A.J. Pearce Dear Mrs. Bird and hopefully a new Nevermore Series book

Your recommendation for book with the best yellow, red, blue, or green cover - just a quick look at my TBR shelf came up with these:
Dear Mrs. Bird by A.J. Pearce Dear Mrs. Bird
Christmas Bizarre (Mina Kitchen #2) by Lizz Lund Christmas Bizarre
To Catch Her Death (Grim Reality, #1) by Boone Brux To Catch Her Death
The Wedding Date (The Wedding Date, #1) by Jasmine Guillory The Wedding Date

Gustaf | 553 comments Well hello!
My name is Gustaf and I am from the very cold country in the north, Sweden.

I only started doing team challenges last year. My first one was a six month long scavenger hunt and after that I was stuck. I'm now a team challenge addict. It's my first time playing UNO though. I might be a little lost in the beginning but I am excited. It seems like a lot of fun. I totally love the real thing. I work at a book store so I read a bit of everything to be updated but my go to genre and what I read most of is MM romance. It's probably 90% of my reading.

For this year: Out of Character and any future releases by Briar Prescott is high on my tbr.

Hmm here's some cover colored recommends:
Yellow:
Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney Jumping Jude (Made Marian, #3) by Lucy Lennox

Red:
The Two Gentlemen of Altona (Playing the Fool, #1) by Lisa Henry Bitten by Desire (Regent's Park Pack, #3) by Annabelle Jacobs

Blue:
Hard Tail (Southampton Stories #2) by J.L. Merrow Leo Loves Aries (Signs of Love, #1) by Anyta Sunday The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish

Green:
Tallowwood (Tallowwood, #1) by N.R. Walker The Garden (Lavender Shores, #2) by Rosalind Abel
