Isadora (isadorabaro) | 40 comments I read the comments which prompted me to respond, an opening salvo with a stated goal of supporting IR WRITERS became yes IMO wholesale grievances, and snd unfortunate comments about IR work being inferior yes that does defeat the purpose of this GR group. I have been reading romance since I was 10 and I am 52, reviewed countless, happy to see how MC and IR authors have staked their claim and own a piece this genre as the spin their tales. But I stand firm that the standard needs to be the same.

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) | 1216 comments I think this is what you may be responding to:

There are people who look for any reason to look down on IR and AA romance, and when they get a hold of a book filled with grammar/spelling mistakes, it just reinforces their belief that the entire genre is substandard.

It IS unfair that authors of color are held to a higher standard by both industry and readers, but that's just facts. It's also a fact that some readers who already have negative preconceived notions of what an IR/AA book is about will just have their biases confirmed should they read a badly edited work. And yes, many of these same readers will give a non-AOC book a pass for despite having just as many - if not more - than the book written by an author of color. This is reality and it's one that authors of color are doing everything to combat. People who didn't like Angie Thomas' "The Hate U Give" found petty ways to one-star their reviews based on nothing more than there was no white savior.

Isadora I specificly said most of my biggest critique are non-Black authors trying to mimic Blackness messing up the genre. That is the big elephant in the room. Hence all these "White Billionaire Step Brother Shifter" Books. I am going to drag that, every time I see. Sorry Not Sorry. The Kindle Unlimited gold rusher are a bigger problem for IR for the reason I mentioned in my previous post

Paganalexandria wrote: "...Isodora there are more complaints in IR because of the influx of the Kindle Unlimited Fiverr gold rushers that have decimated the genre. It got hit hard with the book stuffing, Tiffany-gate scammers. All romance was flooded with that stuff, but because there were so few authors in this small niche, the scammers have outnumbered the legitimate ones at this point..."

I actually mod a midsize general romance group that like Interracial Romance, a few of #TiffanyGate authors writing in the subgenre we feature. But no one in my group was hyped about any of them. Yet at the very moment all that stuff about Chance Carter blew up one of my IR book buddies had rec'd Royal Engagement by Chance Carter . The cover was great, I'll give it that, but it was not good. It read like someone "allegedly" cobbled together a book on Fiverr. It is sad that a lot of the authors that really made this genre are never on the Amazon Kindle Bestsellers list because of crap like this. And every time authors try to scold readers for calling this out, make it easier for the scammers to win. I'm going to be quiet before it gets me in trouble. last time this topic came up it didn't end well for me.

Monilalu tbh I like the theme but if the author doesnt pull me in, I wont read another book by them.

If the book is good, I will look for more books by that author. THere are so many books out there and so little free time to read so im pretty strict.

Can you recommend any dark romcoms?

Savannah- Quad Motherin' Book Readin' Diva (quadmom2005) | 1549 comments I'm just catching up with all the threads here after such a long hiatus. Hey ladies.

I think with IR and me it can boil down to desperation. There are some authors whose names have stuck out over the years that I will never give a second chance to. Latrivia Nelson turned me off so bad that I NEVER read another thing by her and never will.

But in whats still almost a fledgling genre in terms of mainstream offerings, I can't always choose to be picky. I do have some things that are an immediate no for me. I actually agree with Arch about the money titles. To me that speaks to an inexperienced author who still thinks theres a fetish type draw to interracial relationships. ie, someone can only be dating a white man if he's going to elevate them in life and a white man will only be dating a black woman because he just finds her too hot and such an "exotic beauty" that he can't resist. I can't.

But if the book is borderline and I can say I would have liked it if a few things had not been present or would have been different, I'll keep giving them a go a few times.

Justine | 1361 comments There is one author that I will not read, because the books are just plain stupid, with over the top, ridiculous drama and badly written to boot. And no, it isn't Latrivia Nelson.

I give new authors 2 chances if the issues are not egregious. If they repeat the same issues that annoy me by the 2nd book, then I am done.
