A - Annihilation A very interesting read, worth experiencing once. Not sure if I'll be reading the sequels, because I'm afraid they will take away from the mystery.
B -
C -
D - Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom - very disappointing, poorly executed modern one trick pony of a book.
E -
F -
G - Glory Road: very weak and unprofessional.
H -
I - I Am Legend: a rare occasion where the book is worse of the movie.
J -
K - Killing Commendatore: Haruki Murakami keeps growing on me, every book appears deceptively simple but you just can't get enough of his style of writing. Also I think he is getting the hang of actual endings!
L - The Lost World: a classic but unfortunately not of the timeless kind. It definitely reads as pulp of the time.
M -
N - Neptune's Brood: Vorkosigan Saga meets publishing house pressure and poor world building.
O - One Summer: America, 1927. A very interesting book which explores numerous subjects and origins of many of modern concepts.
P -
Q -
R -
S - Saturn's Children: Ew, steer clear. A book where two gimmick ideas do not hold water and added pervy parts are there only for the shock value.
T - Thinking, Fast and Slow. A nice book overall, but here and there it felt dated and at times narrow-minded
U -
V -
W - World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War - still in the process of reading.
X -
Y -
Z -

Feel free to join and copy paste my list!

Kindred was fine for me, but I liked her Parable of the Sower better, even if it is an emotionally hard book

message 57: by Joe (new)

Joe Santoro | 261 comments I thought Kindred was more powerful... it just really hit home with how horrible people can be to each other if given half a chance.

Parable of the Sower is a better book plot wise. Kindred feels more like a Parable, ironically.

Both required reading, though!

I added 4 more--here's what I wrote about them over in the "what have you been reading thread"
Half Magic (an older kid's magic book, but just as wonderful as my memories of it),
Zero In (the last of the Dean Koontz Nameless series, but not as good as some others in the series),
The XY (a poorly done "all the men died" scenario--don't read it even if you need an "X" book), and
You Suck by Christopher Moore, the second book of the funniest books about vampires I have ever read. This guy is hysterical. I even laughed out loud. I am definitely reading all of his books.

Lookee lookee! I only need U and V!!! And I have two U's to choose from right now!

A - Attack Surface by Cory Doctorow
B - The Book of Koli by M.R. Carey
C - Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman
D - A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik
E - Evil Overlord: The Makening by Michael McClung
F - First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones
G - Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews
H - Half Magic by Edward Eager

Well, I read Verity and it was a disappointment. (view spoiler)

And I tried to read three books starting with U--The Unspoken Name, Unsouled, and The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep--and they all were so boring I had to bail. I will probably return to one of them in December and skim. Or if anyone has a U book that is a page turner, please suggest! (Or if any of you think I should return to one of the above, please advise) Thanks.

Only two to go now! I knocked out J with Jem by Frederick Pohl. That's a good one, if a bit bleak.

I stalled on Life During Wartime, but started The Legion of Time by Jack Williamson and will likely finish that first to get L.

Finally, I've been eager to read Queen of Angels by Greg Bear for months, and it looks like I will finally get to it this week!

Well, I found a short one, UnStrung by Neal Shusterman I was going to read on to the third book of the series because this was #1.5, a short piece, but I decided that I could not bear them. The first book of this series truly creeped me out. So much so that I forgot to list it here on GR when I read it a year or two ago. So anyway, I am counting it as a U for now, and if I manage to read another U later, I will stick it in the list instead.

I'm done! No prize for me, I'm a mod. Just tell me how wonderful I am.

*Tau* | 107 comments As I had totally forgotten about this challenge, I just took a look and updated with the books I've read so far.
At this moment there are also non-SFF books and short stories listed, but by the end of the year I'll leave those ones out.

For SFF I just need books starting with A - F - G - J - N - U - V - X - Y
But as I like to read without restraints, I'm just reading the books which appeal to me most and I'll see how far I get doing that.

Reading Animus Mundi: Tales of the Spirit of Place, From His Perspective and Genius Loci: Tales of the Spirit of Place at the moment, so the first three spots will be the next ones that'll be filled up 😉

Tau, I think of the ones I read only three might be considered NOT SFF, and I am not really sure about those

Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman
Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone
Verity by Colleen Hoover

All of these three are about people with altered mental states and/or are edging into horror. I TOTALLY recommend the first two. So I am good with counting them.

It totally wasn't a remark towards you, Kateblue!
Sorry if my reaction made you feel otherwise.
Of course it's totally fine to count those books you mention!

What I actually meant, is that I consider it a challenge for myself to read only SFF-books for this list.
As I read lots of different genres, I sometimes read less SFF-books and I'd like to try to change that 😉

Thanks for the tips btw 😄

Queen of Angels, my last book, is going slowly. It’s really good so far, but it’s hard & heavy SF, so it takes more concentration (not my strong suit). It’s busy season at work, and I just haven’t had good bits of time to just sit and read. Hard to make much headway 10 pages at a time.

I haven't commented earlier, since I'm pretty sure I won't be completing the challenge, but I realized just now that I'm missing only a few letters:
A - Among Others
B - The Book of Koli
C - Capitalism, Alone: The Future of the System That Rules the World by Branko Milanović (non-fic, economics, very good)
D - David Mogo Godhunter
E - The Empress of Salt and Fortune
F - Fugitive Telemetry
G - Good Economics for Hard Times: Better Answers to Our Biggest Problems by Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Duflo (non-fic, economics, okay but much worse that their earlier book)
H - Halla Helle by Niillas Holmberg (Finnish book, about a man who moves to Lappland and whose Sami girlfriend is going through an ethno-existential crisis. Very political and polemical, but still surprisingly good.)
I - Iron Council
J - Jälleenlöydetty aika by Marcel Proust (Finnish translation of Le Temps retrouvé)
K - Kuunpäivän kirjeet by Emmi Itäranta (eco-fiction in an Expanse-like setting, not [yet] translated to English. Good worldbuilding, characters and plot, but the prose was too purple and flowery for my tastes.)
L -
M - The Memory Theater
N - The Narrow Corridor: States, Societies, and the Fate of Liberty by Daron Acemoğlu and James A. Robinson (non-fiction, politics/economics, not as good as their previous book)
O - One Day All This Will Be Yours
P - Project Hail Mary
Q -
R - Red Mars
S - The Scar
T - The Trials of Koli
U - Uhka avaruudesta (The Finnish translation of Rendezvous with Rama)
V - Vita Nostra
W -
X -
Y -
