So, 101 pages works but 100 doesn't? Sorry, my autistic brain is malfunctioning a bit today.

My music knowledge is terrible... But I'll still try to guess.. Until then I'll try to hunt for books that fit the tasks!

message 603: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments The book I am currently reading will fit in for "# 21. Read a book where the MC is a doctor/nurse"

And I have 3 books that fit in for the 11th task,ie,

31. Read a book with MPG Detective Fiction
32. Read a book with the word "air" in the title/series title
33. Read a book with a black & white cover

Is this is okay for black & white cover? The Whisper Man by Alex North

Yes to it being black and white!

Ummm... I think it literally means black and white.
The Whisper Man has the names in a different color, so I won't be surprised if that doesn't work.

EDIT: Won't work. The Mods clearly said "Everything on cover must be black and white". Sorry! :=(

message 608: by Laura (new)

Laura Wow, this challenge is not going to be as easy as the previous one!!
I'm excited though, even if I don't think I'll figure out any of the clues - I'm sure I'll say, Aaaah yes of course when I see the answers though :D

Can't we just put our guesses in the spreadsheet? Only the group members have access to it, correct?

Apoorv Moghe (goodreadscomapoorv) | 839 comments Update

So, all of you should have a message in your inboxes from me regarding the Mini Challenge. Do take a look at it when you can and let's work from there.

Let me know if you didn't receive one or reach out for any questions.

message 613: by Laura (new)

Laura Oooh I have received the secret message!
I've jotted down some thoughts but I'm really only sure about the one with the twins. I hope you all know lots about music!

message 614: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments Are we allowed to discuss with families? My son is a pro bass player and a total music nerd and his wife is a singer. He'd love this puzzle although the 80's aren't really his area. Maybe if we get stuck I can pass it on to him...

message 615: by Apoorv (new)

Apoorv Moghe (goodreadscomapoorv) | 839 comments I don't see why we can't, Elisabeth! This would be a fun puzzle for them given their love for music.

message 616: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathrynr227) | 73 comments Hey everyone. Do you think that The Magicians could count as "a book where fictional characters end up in real life"? The book series that the main character read growing up suddenly ends up being a real place, of which he enters and becomes a student at the magic school there. Is it close enough to count for that task?

Yeah, I'm hoping that it'll work. Because I started the TV show a while back and it was pretty decent. People say the show is better than the book, which is crazy to think about, but I'd still like to check it out nonetheless.

Gosh, I hope not. The show started out really good but the last season was so terrible we didn't even finish it.

Another book that could work for this prompt is Inkheart if anyone wants to read some young adult fantasy. It's a pretty good series.

I'm going to take a look at all the clues today and see if I have any books that could work for the very specific ones.

Laura Questions!
Would either of these work for the "white hat"?
Beach Read by Emily Henry
Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell

How about this one for the leather jacket?
Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher

"Beach Read" works for white hat, "Hamnet" doesn't.
I'm on the fence about "Storm Front" for the leather jacket, because I can't make it out as leather from the jacket cover. So, I will err towards no.

message 627: by Laura (new)

Laura If it helps, it looks like the character is wearing the same jacket on each cover in the series and the recent ones are clearer. But if it's not okay that's fine.
I'll read Beach Read for the white hat clue then!

The 500+ clue might be a better yet, if you're already reading one that is that long. The one set in CA is relatively easier to find and could squeeze in a shorter book for that.

Oooooo! This is interesting!
Finding the Meg Ryan hair reference is so rare, its amazing that you found it. But the main cue is about permed hair, so that I believe is primary requirement.

But save this book, maybe we can use it.
So stoked that you found the Meg Ryan reference.

EDIT: So, I found two books too which reference MR, but nothing about the word perm. One of the book describes it though without using the actual word. Hmm!

We are reading 45 books! One per task.
The tasks are just clubbed into groups for 3 to lead us to a clue about the singer/song which, if guessed correctly, are bonus points.

I just realised that we can use the book for another task! So even if it doesn't work for the MR reference, it still works out for the Mini Challenge :)

Laura Vicki, Tina, you've both read Circe, would it fit the category "one of the characters is a god"?
It's got mythology as one of its shelves but not the top shelf. And I can't check the MPG as I've only got it on kindle and it has no genres on the copyright page. Or does it count if it's one of the main genres on goodreads?

I've added the books I'm going to read for the mini challenge to the team spreadsheet; for one of them that Paris read in February I just copied all of her notes into my row, I haven't started reading it yet but I assume it's all correct :)

Apoorv wrote: "EDIT: So, I found two books too which reference MR, but nothing about the word perm. One of the book describes it though without using the actual word. Hmm!"
Well surely that counts, right!

message 644: by Apoorv (last edited Mar 14, 2021 10:50AM) (new)

Apoorv Moghe (goodreadscomapoorv) | 839 comments This is what the Mods say about the Meg Ryan task.
------------------
Task 23 (a character with permed hair/a character getting their hair permed) gets you 10 points.

The Meg Ryan hair reference will be accepted as an "extra" in any of the books you use for the mini challenge, whether it's for the permed hair or some other task, for that you get 5 bonus points "only".
-------------------------

So, permed hair is the primary task. Meg Ryan reference in any other book can get us the added 5 points.

Yes, I specifically remember Prometheus, Hermes, and Athena. If you're thinking about reading it, go for it. I loved it but I love Greek mythology. I taught Odysseus when I was teaching and that brought back fond memories. It's one of the stories most students liked with Polyphemus (the Cyclops), Scylla and Charybdis other monsters. LOL
