The Perks Of Being A Book Addict discussion

It's really, really good. It's a big one but I've read about 70% so far, most of it today as the weather has been icky so we've just stayed in on the sofa under a blanket.
I'm honestly a little freaked out about the weather, last week it was 25°C here and I was reading outside in the sun; today it's actually snowing (in April!) and the flakes are super thick, like someone's shaking out a down cover in our garden or something. Weird.

Hey ho--they look like good reads and you never know, might fit something in the mini.

So, Elisabeth, if you red book looks red to you, I can have it asked to the Mods/Other Caps and get a yay/nay for that.

I actually appreciate your point of view Laura. I've studied public health and am generally intersted in it. I want to understand the global response to the pandemic and what worked and didn't work and why. From what I understand, Australia had a quick government response and public behavioural changes to it; USA did not have a good government response and but had some public behavioural change or interest in health which seems to be the same in Belgium but not as bad as USA.
But that's so frustrating that you're doing what you can for your health and the public, and others don't care at all. And that festival situation is not good at all! Using water cannons is an interesting technique from the police! It's sad because there will be mass gathering situations that shouldn't be happening :/
And yes! Get back to me about the board games haha

I think we're going good! I've been trying to save my reading for when the mini challenge comes out so my red book will be counted

That sounds lovely! I love books about cracking codes and women power from WW2... or just girl power

It's why I don't like using tineye. It makes finding a book cover hard for colours grr

LOL! That made me chuckle!
TinEye is truly special! :D
As a general rule though, if you are not happy with TinEye's outcome for any cover, post it here and we can decide as a team. If not, I can always ask in the Mods group for a consensus. Better to ask than assume.

Update. There are two entries for the same book! I took the first that came up

This book was absolutely amazing and I can highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys historical fiction, powerful women and/or codebreaking.
Also I want to change jobs and be a codebreaker now, but I don't suppose I can :D

Board games:
A few games I would recommend if you are used to playing the classics like Monopoly are
- Carcasonne
- Ticket to Ride (I prefer the Europe version)
- Villainous (Disney themed but I don't know if you're into that)
- Bärenpark
A bit more difficult, but really fun and beautiful:
- Wingspan; it's about birds and there's also an expansion for it about Oceania :)
- Azul
- Sagrada, both of these are a bit abstract but they're so pretty :D
- Parks, about the US national parks
If you like playing with just 2 people here are some recommendations:
- Jaipur
- Patchwork
- Hive - it's sort of like chess but different :D
- Santorini
And if you would prefer party games that you can play with a lot of people I can highly recommend Codenames. It's hilarious. There's also Exploding Kittens which is very funny but I don't want to play it anymore because we played it too much and I got sick of it :D
Anyway; there are thousands of games and I could go on forever but I would suggest you pick something that visually appeals to you and with a theme you like. Board games are generally quite expensive but you can often find them in thrift shops too.
I hope this was useful! :)

Sounds great, Laura. Thanks.

It'll be 0 or 2.
There are 12 monologues in it and almost every character's name starts with J, even some of the referenced people. Very odd. Apart from that it's very good. Bit like the Alan Bennett Talking Heads.

We just read all day, did nothing else except eat and shower! I didn't even cook because we had leftovers (strategically planned of course).
My boyfriend is a very slow reader so he just read Red Rising all day and finished it around 10.30pm. I read 3,5 books (the first one was already 1/3 through before Saturday) and then when I finished the Familiars around 10pm I had had enough because I didn't want to start another book so I watched a tiny bit of TV :) it was a really fun day!
I'm excited to see what the mini challenge is going to be this month. It's a bit of a pity that it's going to start towards the end of next week because my vacation will end then, but I'll do my best!

We'll get you more details soon ;)

Oh, I am a slow reader. This UNO Challenge had boosted my reading. Unfortunately I am moving soon (maybe to Florida, depends on which offer comes first), so I am packing boxes. Wish us luck!

My boyfriend likes reading but he reads mostly comics, graphic novels and manga. They take less time :) he's planning to read 12 books this year so yesterday certainly helped!
Good luck with your move, Danah! How can you not know where you're moving? I'm confused :D
Apoorv - WHAT!!

Tina, I'm honestly not sure. I think it's partly because our government is too slow in taking action and partly because people just don't follow the rules. The old "give them a finger and they'll take an arm" adage definitely applies here too. Our neighbours - who are the most white trash people I've ever seen, but anyway - have people over every single day, often four or five different people over the course of the day. They've never followed the rules even when we were in actual lockdown last year. And there are many people like that here, who feel like the rules don't apply to them and others will follow them so they'll be safe or something. This week there was an April Fool's joke that there was a festival in a park in Brussels and everybody knew it was a joke but thousands of people (mostly young adults) still went and partied. The police had to use water cannons and everything.
Anyway that being said - sorry if I went on a little long, I really hate people who don't follow the rules while we do our best - I'm going to have a think about board games! We often play quite difficult games but we have some 'gateway' games as well, I'll keep you posted :D
