Firstly, hope ur feeling better now! I am a Chartered Accountant, so I don't think I'll ever be a writer. I'm happy being a reader :D. But I really do hope you get a chance to be proofreader or writer someday.

I am planning on starting with The House Guest. I had been planning to read it for a long time. I just postponed reading it for this challenge. So I am so excited!

I am not reading much this week! Just reviewing some books that I have already read this month.

And a very Happy Birthday to your boyfriend!

I loved it! Alafair Burke is one of my favorite authors. I especially love her 'Under Suspicion Series' along with Mary Higgins Clarks.

Wow! I have missed a lot on this thread. Let me start by saying that tomorrow (January 27) is my birthday and I will be 71, so I don't think we've played together since we were kids; however, let's say that you're my adopted son and you are my baby. LOL My youngest before your adoption and inclusion into our family is 41 years old, so let's just say that you've been in my family for 31 years, born March 17 (my oldest was born March 15, one grandson on March 6, and a granddaughter on March 19), so you've been around a nice long time!

I've been MIA because I spent four days watching four of my grandkids while my daughter and her hubby went to Miami. He's 43 and it was his first time ever in a plane. So I'll just say that with a toddler who'll be 3 in March and a baby who'll be 1 in March I was kept very busy. When I got home that day I took a five hour nap! That's something I never do! I think I've been recuperating since.

Sunday I got my 1st COVID vaccination and it went perfectly. I didn't even have a sore arm, so we'll see what the next shot does to my body.

I am going to go through and read the comments now. Looks like everyone is having a great time here. :)

Kathryn (kathrynr227) | 73 comments Sorry that I'm not adding a lot to the conversation. However, it's been fun reading about each of you. I think we've got a really good, creative group here! I look forward to getting to know all of you more, as well as your reading tastes. I'm always trying to discover new books that are outside of my "comfort zone", so I'm excited to see what you read.

I'll be reading a lot of young adult and middle grade chapter books in February, as I have a ton of them I need to read for NetGalley. And my boyfriend has never read Harry Potter, so I've been reading it to him (so I'll be finishing up #2 in February).

They're going to start vaccinating here in Aus some time in Feb. The situation isn't as urgent here as other countries but the medical experts keep warning us it's still bubbling away waiting to make a comeback and not to become complacent.

Perhaps you want to be grandiloquent, but it won't impress me since I gave you the word! I loved using that word with my students who were freshmen (grade 9, 14-15 year old students). I used to give my students vocab words and told them to learn them so they'd become a part of their language and not just to learn them for a test and then forget them. When they used vocabulary words (such as grandiloquent) in essays or orally in class, I gave them a point each time. It worked really well for those who cared about their education and were in Honors (advanced English) classes.

I remember one time a student asked me, "Hey, Mrs. Evans, can you spell supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?" Of course that wasn't a word I had in my head, but I sounded it out and spelled it for them and boy were they impressed! LOL

Sadly, I live in San Joaquin County, in California and it is THE WORST county in the Central Valley. We were doing really well until after Christmas and then things exploded. Our ICU bed availability is at 0% now and it went from doing really well to horrible seemingly overnight. Definitely don't get complacent! We have been on lockdown (stay-at-home order...again) since December 3 but the governor finally lifted it on just yesterday. Now we can have outdoor dining at restaurants, hair and nail salons can open again, and various other things but not in totality. It's been quite the year!

600+ pages is an amazing feat! I find the older I get, the lazier I become with books that have more than 300 or 400 pages.

My boyfriend actually grew up in a home where he wasn't educated or even taught to read. I wouldn't call his family Amish by any means, because they aren't, but it was a very controlled environment like that. He wasn't allowed to watch TV, had never left his home to see anywhere else, etc. But he got out of that and has slowly been catching up on ALL the things he missed out on. It's been fun introducing him to things that I myself have known my whole life.

Laura Vicki wrote: "Perhaps you want to be grandiloquent, but it won't impress me since I gave you the word! I loved using that word with my students who were freshmen (grade 9, 14-15 year old students)."

The way you describe it sounds great! My students are, of course, learning English as a foreign language so their vocabulary mostly consists of very basic words :D (I mean we literally spend the first month on introducing yourself and the verb to be) but I love the idea.
I do however always use supercalifragilisticexpialidocious when I teach the English alphabet. We go over all the letters first, we practise a little with various names and short words and then I say "Well now I'm going to spell a really long word for you... But I mean really long!" and it's always fun. Then I show a clip of the movie because most kids don't know it anymore, but there's always one or two who do know where it's from!
It's a really good one to use too, because it has lots of a's, e's and i's which are the most difficult for our students. That's because they all sound like one of the others in our own alphabet - the English "a" sounds like the Dutch "e", and so on.
Also, happy birthday!

Tina wrote: "Is anyone doing any other team challenges starting February? Eg from AMMP, Game Night, etc...? If so, I'll see you there"
I've joined a few groups that do team challenges, but as this is my first one ever I'm just going to do this and see how it goes - it also seems really difficult to do more than one at the same time! But if I enjoy UNO (and I predict I will) I'll probably join some others in the future.

Up until December, I had never joined a Goodreads group, I wasn't following anyone book-related on Instagram or Youtube, I didn't even realise online book clubs or team reading challenges existed. Then I stumbled upon someone who had a Harry Potter-themed readathon and started following her on Instagram. Around the same time a few girls from a fitness-related Facebook group I'm in posted their bookstagram accounts and I started following them too, then I read an article from Book Riot about the best online book clubs, which led me to this group, and now I'm completely obsessed over this whole new world that's opened to me! I LOVE it!

Oh boy! This reminds me of the 2018-2019 period when I was in all these challenges across GoodReads and I had a massive spreadsheet as well. It just became nuts after a point. I remember when I was in 8 team challenges at a time, and while I had loads of fun with the actual challenges, I was just reading for reading's sake and not really choosing my books carefully.

So, I've toned down massively. Although, I'll be going back to the SRC Spring challenge, which is a solo project but can get crazy competitive because it has points. So I hope to marry both these for now before I get sucked into the whirlwind of GoodReads challenges. Again!

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments I've signed up for several year long challenges. A couple are from Aus readers groups and involve reading either all or a minimum number of Aus authors' books. One is choosing books set in different states and a really fun one is an alphabet challenge using anywhere in the world setting place names. I like the alphabet challenges and most books fit in across a few challenges so it's not as demanding as it sounds.

I also challenged myself to read 85 books this year. UNO really helps boost that number!

Sadly, I haven't been able to take him to a theme park yet. But he's very, very excited at the idea of Universal (for Harry Potter, of course) and Disney World. We're hoping to go by the end of this year, as hopefully the majority of the population will be vaccinated by then!

He's really, really taken to movies. I started showing him the Disney movies from the very beginning through now. We've made it up to Aladdin, which is the next one he'll be watching. He really thinks they're a lot of fun. He also really likes shows like "The Deadliest Catch" and whatnot. :)

It's definitely been fun for him to learn new things. I've loved watching it. He's in homeschool right now. He's trying to get an education. It's odd, because he's 20 and he's at a pretty low grade still. He's smart, really smart. He picks up on things really quickly. His reading level is at like 3rd grade, though. I truly admire you for teaching English as a Second Language. I'm not sure if it's titled the same where you teach it, but in the U.S. we call is ESL. I had quite a few ESL students in my classes, so I used many visual aids, pairs learning, groups, and hands on lessons. I admire those who can teach a second language. It wasn't easy teaching English to students who spoke Spanish, German, Hmong, Thai, Chinese, and so many other languages and I spoke none of theirs except a little Spanish. But I loved helping students learn vocabulary words. I know when I spoke Spanish the students would chuckle and I asked if I had an accent and they'd say yes. They'd repeat the word for me 2-3 times and I'd repeat it, but if I didn't get it just right they thought it was "cute." LOL

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments Thank you everyone for your birthday wishes! I had a great day but no family or visits due to the rain and flooding in my city and surrounding cities. Trees downed, electricity down in many areas, high winds, so we decided to wait until Friday. I did a lot of relaxing today after cleaning the house and a 3 hour 40 minute nap, but I needed it because with the rains and winds and things blowing around outside I only got just under 4 hours of sleep.

Looks like we have a really fun and active group here too, which I really love!

I think that there are those of us who are CHALLENGE ADDICTS and are in multiple challenges! It is a lot to keep track of for sure but so fun! It is because of the challenges that I went outside my comfort zone and began reading genres (sci-fi) that I had never read for fun and avoided like crazy unless I had to read a book to help a student with their understanding of a book they chose to read for class. I always offered them to choose their own genres to read because that helped more than anything else to just get them reading! But I never liked sci-fi nor fantasy until GR. I taught English for 25 years but I didn't read any Harry Potter books until March 2014 and I joined GR in August 2012. I probably never would've read it otherwise. lol

I've heard of SRC and have been tempted to but I know that it'll be too intense for me haha. I get competitive especially with myself. I'm someone who judges a book by a cover and most of the times I'm correct in assuming that I will or won't like it. So specific tasks are great for me but sometimes a pain to find

Are you in the Aussie Readers group Elisabeth? It's the only Australian group I'm aware of. I'm appreciative of having to use Aussie authors as a requirement in tasks.

The ABC challenges definitely are useful to explore your book range.

I hope you achieve your goal!

Universal and Dream World will be amazing for him (and everyone)! If/When I visit USA, I plan to do all things Harry Potter and Disney as well as some delicious food there. Though I am intimidated by the portion sizes.

Are you watching the animated and the live action Disney movies? or just animated for now? And all the sequels too? That's a lot haha

Yes to Deadliest Catch! I'm sure there's other shows like that as well.

I'm loving hearing what he's up to Kathryn! Let us know throughout the challenge what else you two do :) You're giving me ideas of what to do as well haha. Eg watch Disney movies again

Guess I'll be seeing you here, there, and everywhere then! lol"

Yes! I think I'm already seeing you in AMMP Vicky 🕵🏻‍♀️

Glad your birthday was great but not glad for the dramatic weather. It sounds unpleasant! Hopefully there weren't any power outages or other issues with electricity?

I think I would have love you as my teacher Vicky! I always loved reading but had a few periods of not reading in my early education. Not sure why though. But it's always great to have a teacher who pushes you but not too much that you're overwhelmed and not having a good time. I'm glad you finally read Harry Potter though! :P

Good luck Kathryn! Hopefully by the end of the year you'll be published! :)

Your former life sounds fun Danah! Why did you leave it for teaching? Needed a career change?

Did you ever perform at the Opera House? :P I wish I had the time to learn Tai Chi. I've wanted to learn a martial arts for a while now but don't know which one would be the best for me.

The portion sizes here are a bit ridiculous. That's why I tend to order something and then share it with someone else. That way, I don't overdo it. He'll probably want a whole portion to himself, though, because there's a lot of foods he's yet to even try. For instance, he hasn't had a churro. And they are SUPER popular at Disney. LOL.

Right now we're only watching the animated films and their sequels. We'll be moving to the live action versions after we're finished up. We started with movies back in the late 1930's and are up into the 1990's, so we're making good progress. We started back in November. :)

Yes, Deadliest Catch has been fun!! He's also really enjoying shows that have to do with Gold Mining and Opal Hunting. I think he just likes to see people do these dangerous jobs, honestly. He also really likes HGTV, which is mostly house renovations and whatnot. He wants to be someone who goes in and builds homes and also does the interior designing.

I'll definitely share more as we go through the challenge!

And thank you for the well wishes on being published. I'm sure giving it my all!!
