Kristin Kaldahl I had a young adult reader tell me she will give a book one chapter. If the book doesn't grab her, she is on to another. I give books 50ish pages. How about you?

message 2: by Booktastically (new)

Booktastically Amazing (booktasticallyamazing) | 215 comments I am stupid and dumb enough to finish the whole gosh darned train wreck. Seriously, it's like I'm genetically programmed to be UNABLE to resist the temptation of finishing the whole book. So yes, I have a missing brain, sue me.

message 3: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Stringer | 344 comments For me, it depends how little it grabs me. Some I might give a few chapters, others I might give up on page 1.

message 4: by Gianna (new)

Gianna Schiavone (thefaultinourgames) | 13 comments Depends on my mood. I try to finish it all the way through. If 200 pages in it’s really just so bad and I’ve started to feel a reading slump coming on because of it, I put it down to keep up my reading game and I’ll start a book I know will grab my attention.

message 5: by kyley neleh (new)

kyley neleh (kaineleh) | 11 comments Unfortunately, I’m the type of person to put myself through the pain of giving disappointing books a chance and forcing myself all the way through it (with the hopes that there will be a turnaround).

So normally I don’t give up on books, however, there have been plenty of times where I come to the end of a book that I have had THOUGHTS about quitting and definitely been upset about wasting my time reading it.

D.T. | 43 comments Unless I can just tell a book's just not for me, I try to wait 100 pages. Sometimes, a lot of good stories have slow starts

message 8: by Genna (new)

Genna | 192 comments if it’s a long book-say over 300 pages- and i’m not loving it within the first 100 pages i’ll stop. but if it’s shorter than that i’ll push through. also i often pick up books i tried to read before but stopped and once i try them again i often love them! (i tried reading the book thief a couple years ago but i couldn’t get through it. i tried it again a couple months ago and loved it!)

From Heaven With Love (aplacecalledbookland) | 21 comments Hmm... It depends how bored u am and how much I hate it, but u would try at least 4 or 5 chapters maybe because if it starts to reveal things, then I HAVE to finish it bc I always want to know the story even if u don't like it XD

message 10: by May (new)

May | 206 comments So I am one of those people that just can't put a book down no matter what type of book it is. If it goes into my hand it stays until I finish. I have to believe that all books have a good resolution, even if it is not. Some book I love because there resolution is so unexpected and a little darker, like death. But it completes the book and the story. I can only think of one book that I absolutely wished I stooped when my gut and brain were screaming for me to stop. It was just all around boring book and the resolution just did not satisfy.
A lot of my friends either don't like to read or have to much on there plate. I like to have a wide variety of books in my brain that I can recommend. Even if I didn't like it, I would recommend it to the people that might. It can help them through those hard times and just have fun for a little, it does not take a lot of skill to read and interesting and fun book.
The books that I don't finish are the books that I don't feel comfortable reading. There is something in the content that I just don't believe in. For example, swearing every single line. It just to much for me to handle, especially when I have had a stressful day.

message 11: by Megan (new)

Megan Chamberlain I try my hardest to never drop a book, just to satisfy my inner completionist. However, if it really is that bad I try to make it at least between 30-50% through the book. A lot of books start slow, so I wouldn't want to drop it too early in case it picks up.

message 12: by booklover (new)

booklover | 36 comments I hate starting books and not finishing em so I force myself to finish them even if I hate em

jace (taylor's version) (jacespages) | 40 comments Same. I'll probably force myself to finish it as well- i really don't like dnfing books. But if it is a SUPER drag on then i might have too. but it usually depends

message 14: by Rasa (new)

Rasa Ievkalne | 39 comments For me the writing is the key. If the writing is masterful, i will finish it no matter how i like the story. I have pressured myself to finish books with mediocre writing, just so i can give fair rating. But if the writing is horrible and so is the beginning of story, i can give up as soon as 9 pages. Or i might skim over hoping something in middle will capture my interest enough to give this book a shot. I have quit books in the middle or even near end. Especially if i realise that i am finding any excuse not to read particular book. Once i quit a series between books for a simple reason that author required me to read a middle book of her other series just so i could understand what the hell happened. And it was series i really liked, i just detested the manipulation so mutch, that i put the author on my black list.
Conclusion, i don't have a threshold of tolerance. It can be limitless or snap after first few pages.

message 15: by Emily (new)

Emily Clarkson (lostinpilesofbooks) So I don't usually ever give up on books since I try to choose the books I read wisely by my liking of the excerpt given when the authors try to hook you in to read the book. Recently, I have read two books that I didn't take interest in-one I got through 100 pages before I told myself not to put myself through the torture and another 78 pages cuz the book was just moving way too slow. I don't have a certain page limit for my patience of a book. Whenever I feel I really can't read the book then I just stop but I always try to give the book a chance even if I don't like it since I'm hoping that the book will somewhere along the way bypass the boringness of that part in the book.

Kenzie (kenzieandherbooks) | 57 comments Usually like 15 or 20 unless it’s been recommended by multiple family members

message 17: by Yashasvii (new)

Yashasvii | 39 comments I read whole book despite the fact that I am not liking or enjoying it , I don't know why .

message 18: by eylül (new)

eylül (barbaravilliers) | 14 comments Probably 100 or 50 pages, it depends on the book really♡

Celia (alva731) | 71 comments Yashasvii wrote: "I read whole book despite the fact that I am not liking or enjoying it , I don't know why ."

Haha same, I've never given up on a book I think:) I've given up on series, but then I've always finished the book I was reading

message 20: by Jolie (new)

Jolie Damman | 7 comments I usually don't give up on a book. I'm quite stubborn XD. But if it happens, it's usually after the first 10 few pages or so.

message 21: by abby (new)

abby (abby-j) | 14 comments makes me feel guilty when I DNF, but I usually wait until 50% to put it down

message 22: by nαомι (new)

nαомι αndιno (nndno) | 190 comments I have a hard time dnfing books. I might even skim through all of it, but I will. not. put. it. down.
The only two books I've dnf'd are:
The Great Gatsby (20% in)
Love in the Times of Cholera (50% in)

message 23: by Genna (new)

Genna | 192 comments i cannot not finish a book. i'll skim and make myself suffer but i will finish

message 24: by Mrunal (new)

Mrunal (darkicecoffee) | 192 comments A chapter or two.

nαомι αndιno (nndno) | 190 comments Genna wrote: "i cannot not finish a book. i'll skim and make myself suffer but i will finish"

Why are we like this??? This is literally how I get myself into reading slumps :(

message 26: by bookishcarli (new)

bookishcarli | 36 comments I try to always finish my books, especially since I usually buy my books off amazon before reading them now because of covid and my library doesn't have that many YA books. but if I do DNF, it's usually going to be between page 150-250 usually. Not really any farther because it seems like then I should just finish, there's probably not that much left. And not any earlier because then it seems like i didn't give an effort to actually read the book. Although if i do an audiobook or ebook then it might be earlier because unless its really good i just cant concentrate with an ebook or audiobook. Especially with ebooks.

message 27: by UnicornSparkles (new)

UnicornSparkles (ellaencantalibros) | 9 comments I’ll almost always give it 100-150 pages. Then I reevaluate. If it’s only like 300 pages, I’ll just quick read it and skip stupid/boring parts.

Asia | Adventures with Asia Minor (booknerd117) | 135 comments Usually only 100 pages

same here. I'm always willing to give (authors) books a chance

message 30: by Aoife (new)

Aoife Darcy (aoifsbooks) I’ll normally give it 100 pages before giving up. Sometimes I read a more interesting book and go back to the book then at the end of the week either

message 31: by leeisacrow (new)

leeisacrow | 1 comments Half of it, so i tell my self that if I just read a half I can read the other half. Except when it's so bad that I just can't

message 32: by Genna (new)

Genna | 192 comments guys, i finally did it. i DNF’ed a book. 🥳🥳🥳 let me tell you, this book was a train wreck. it was the splendor falls by rosemary clement moore

message 33: by BiBookDemon (new)

BiBookDemon It really depends on how bad the book is. Sometimes I'll read a few chapters, others I can't even finish the first chapter.

message 34: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Liiv (victorialiiv) | 28 comments At the moment I've senced a pattern of stopping at 5th to 7th chapter if I am really not enjoying the book. I try to give it the best change and don't really give up easily. However, as I have started reading more and more indie authors, it happens that some books just don't pull me in as much as the others do.

message 35: by Clarissa (new)

Clarissa | 1 comments If I don't like the first 10 pages I will just give up on the book.

This is true intelligence.

Which I'm missing.

message 37: by carmela (new)

carmela | 19 comments It depends on how much I don’t like the book. But I almost ALWAYS read it through to the end and just take another one to clean my eyes out after reading it 😂 Every book I read has its bits of appreciation from me.

message 38: by L. (new)

L. Sherleen (l_sherleen) It depends on the format for me. If its KU book I don't have any qualms about dropping a book that doesn't catch my interest after a chapter or two. If it's a physical copy that I own or have borrowed from the library, I'll probably push myself to at least the halfway point, and won't drop it unless I'm finding it unbearably boring. I'm more likely to give up on romance books in the middle than any other genre if I don't like the core relationship, but I'll see out other genres to the end to see where the story leads.

message 39: by Madalynn (new)

Madalynn Lane | 6 comments After reading The Host by Stephenie Meyers (A stupidly slow book but REALLY good once you force yourself into it) I find it hard to put down a book unless I really really don't like it.

message 40: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nathan-93) I read multiple books.. so it mainly depends on my mood. I have never DNF'd a book but one fine day due to some trigger, I will go back to that book and finish it. [But will never re-read those books ever again]

alexis (taylor’s version) whenever i want, it really depends. Sometimes I'll end after the 3rd chapter and sometimes halfway through.

message 42: by Sally (new)

S Sally | 23 comments i just dont stop

Jenna Marie ~Scheming Scribbler~ | 228 comments Most of the time I will read an entire book, no matter how bad, unless it gets into details I don't want to read about (sexual, violence, ect.). If it does get too vivid in those types of things, I usually read a few chapters beyond to see if it continues, and if it does, stop there. Sometimes this is at the beginning, sometimes almost to the end

message 44: by ✨Meryem✨ (new)

✨Meryem✨ (faylinn) Same as Jenna, I would read the whole book but when I can't handle it anymore, I won't stop before 50%, because sometimes it picks up after the half

message 45: by Whispering (new)

Whispering | 6 comments Most times I wouldn't give up on a book. But recently, I've realized that there are so many books I want to read and I can't spend my time on books I hate.
So these days, I'll read about 20-30% of the book and if I'm still not feeling it by then, I'll drop it

message 46: by Taylor (new)

Taylor l The Literary Lady l (the_literarylady) | 4 comments Since my TBR pile is so massive, my motto is after 150 pages of boredom or pure annoyance I close the book and put it back on the shelf. Life is too short to waste time on books that you don't enjoy 🙃

message 47: by ayyyitsabook (new)

ayyyitsabook | 4 comments I usually read at least half of the book before deciding to give up on it. Sometimes it’s a huge waste of time but idk it’s just a habit of mine.

message 48: by Cherry (new)

Cherry -Mental Health Hiatus- | 36 comments the only reason I give up on a book is i I just can't with it anymore. Like this one book eva. It was about a girl who was injured sobwdly they put her into the body of a monkey. I just couldn't handle it anymore so I abandoned it

message 49: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 126 comments I know this feels like a copout answer, but I'm coming from the perspective of someone who used to INSIST on finishing any book/series that he started. I realized, time is finite and that every book I'm not enjoying and force myself to get through is another on my TBR list that I will not get to in my lifetime.

So, my current rule is; if at any point in any book or series(movies, shows and comics included) you lose your interest and it feels like work, drop it and move on to something else because you read for enjoyment.

message 50: by Imxlda (new)

Imxlda | 110 comments If I read two medium length(like 10-15 pages or so) and the book still doesn't get my attention, it's going back to the shelf. Book I've read 14 times, here I come
