Theresa | 15574 comments Happy Groundhog's Day! I can pretty much guaranty that Punxatawny Phil did not see his shadow this morning. I'm not sure he was even able to make his way out of his hutch given the piles of snow everywhere.

I will confess to a fondness for the Bill Murray movie...and also for the Broadway musical adaptation. I wonder if the musical is streaming anywhere these days???

It's a snow day in NYC. Not that it makes a difference when working from home. Streets have been plowed and there actually is some melting happening.

Time to leave my apartment to check the mail, take out trash, etc.

How is everyone? What's new?

message 2: by Meli (new)

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments Great movie!

So what's the deal, he doesn't see his shadow and winter ends sooner? I can never remember...

It is cold as hell here! For the next few days I am WFH so I don't plan to leave the house except to go on my porch and get mail. Sunday is high of 7 :(

Otherwise I am feeling pretty good this week.
Staying warm and productive and making progress on A (not-so) Brief History of Seven Killings 😊

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12593 comments Good News on the home front here. My daughter will be leaving the world of News reporting and taking a new job April 1st as a Media Specialist for a a guy who has his hands in just about everything in a city near to us. The best part? Salary has been doubled which will allow her to move out! Love her dearly, but this past year as really been a strain on our relationship. Too much togetherness can really spoil the party..lol.

Another great thing occurring-finally getting my procedure. I hate calling it that, but I can never remember the exact name. It is similar to an epidural, but a bit more complicated than that. The not so good news is that no matter how it turns out the outcome won't be great. If I get some relief for a few months than that means my joints around my spine are enflamed and I may have to have this done periodically. If it does not give me relief then there is something else wrong and I may have to see the surgeon.
I opt for choice 1, so keep me in your thoughts Friday.

Miss Lola is doing better now that we have her on meds. She does not limp much, and so no surgery for now.

@Meli, very cold here too. I hate it. Everything is frozen. It is a good thing I have no where I really have to be. hibernating with my books and Lady Grey tea.

Meli - if a clear day so he sees his shadow, means 6 more weeks of winter. Based on a Pennsylvania Dutch Superstition. Here is a link:

And in Canada, 6 more weeks would be an "early" spring! (But I don't think that's what it's supposed to mean! I think the additional 6 weeks is supposed to mean the winter lasts longer. LOL!)

Honestly, I also never remember if seeing the shadow is supposed to mean an early spring or not, either. "6 weeks" doesn't help! LOL! Winter - over in mid-March? That would be really nice!

message 6: by Meli (new)

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments @Joanne - congratulations to your daughter and getting your space back! Good luck on you procedure, I will keep you in my thoughts on Friday 😓 I had my tea around 4, so waiting for dinner so I can crawl into my reading bed and get cozy!

Found out my local bookstore will start getting some bookish teas so looking forward to trying those 😊 I really only drink tea in winter.

@Theresa - If this lil nugget didn't even come out of his hole then we should be good!

Has anyone in this thread ever been to the groundhog's day event?? Seems kinda fun.

message 7: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15574 comments Here is video of Phil predicting 6 more weeks of winter. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p-2uSak...

I have never been to the live event. I love how they dress up in top hats!

@LibraryCin - in truth you can pretty much be sure that snow is likely until Easter has come and gone here.

@Joanne - great news for Natalie! Fingers crossed on procedure. Glad Miss Lola has settled down too! As for hibernating, nothing wrong with staying in your cozy reading tent with hot beverage in one hand and a book with a dragon on the cover in the other!

Holly R W | 3122 comments @Joanne, I want to wish you well for your procedure. As the mother of a young adult son, I can understand why you and your daughter both need to have your own homes. Her new job sounds wonderful.

The groundhog seeing his shadow is well-known here in the mid-west. A new twist is that during this pandemic, we're experiencing Groundhog's Day every day. ;P

Booknblues | 12098 comments They opened up 65+ in my county and I had a chance to sign up yesterday for a vaccine on Friday, but alas by the time I saw the email it was too late and it had been filled. :(

message 14: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments Big news in my world is Bezos stepping away from being CEO. Everyone was a buzz yesterday afternoon and this AM.

I got my bookshelves up and books put away... half of my office is still a big mess though. So how do people organize their books? I separated out the books that I get from my 3 subscription boxes (Owlcrate, Book of the Month and Scribbler) and then everything else is alphabetized by author. If I have the a bunch of the same author then I alphabetize by title. I once organized by color but then I could never find the books that I wanted! lol

Still trying to find my mom a vaccination but they've shut most of the places down because there is no vaccine here. :( At least we are rural and she never sees people.

message 15: by Meli (last edited Feb 03, 2021 09:20AM) (new)

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments @Theresa - THAT I shall do! It is so freakin cold here 🥶

@Charlotte - There is not a lot of rhyme or reason to my madness, but I try to keep things organized by genre, no alphabetizing at all. That would require too much effort.

Also, no vaccine!? That's horrible! You in a blue state? Those states are predominately underfunded for COVID and undersupplied.
I hope you get restocked and replenished soon.

Yea... and there were a lot of the distributors here that were prioritizing donors to hospitals and VIPs. Our Governor has banned that but unfortunately it's a bit to late now that our supply is exhausted. No word on when we'll get more vaccine and they've pushed out all of the other phases until summer.

message 17: by Meli (new)

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments Good thing you are isolated then... All my grandmas and MILs and other older friends got the first round and are ready for the 2nd. I'll be here waiting for a while 😂

message 18: by Joi (new)

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments Good news- parents have gotten their 2nd shot- no side effects!! My county is still behind- doing healthcare/educators/long term care right now, and don't even have enough for that group yet.

I've only been swindled into buying 5 boxes of girl scout cookies so far (remember folks, I don't like sweets that much). Hubby will be happy.

My favorite are the shortbread Trefoils. But I bought hubby's fav- Samoas also.

message 19: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15574 comments NYC is not scheduling first dose appointments now and has not for a few weeks. New vaccine shipments are being used for the 2nd dose needed for those of us who got a first dose before the state ran out (Jan 22), and those who already had a first dose appointment. Since you need the 2nd dose within a certain window of time in order for the vaccine to be effective, that makes complete sense to me. I just happen to have been lucky in scheduling.

The real problem is the lack of national organization to the production and distribution. Of course, that's now being rectified but we had 2 months of chaos. There is just no way that production and distribution can be managed on a state by state basis. Getting it into arms: yes.

message 20: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15574 comments @Charlotte - my books are currently a mess - massive chaos and disorganization which is dauntng considering the massive number of books I have. When I moved into this apartment about 10 years ago, it was in a hurry, just as I was leaving for a 3 week trip to Europe at Christmas, and I needed the walls painted. Once that was done and new bookcases arrived, I just had to get the boxes empty as I was hosting an alumnae event. I have never taken the time to reorganize them. But I will be as I really need to go through and purge at this point.

However, once upon a time I was organized - by genre then alphabetical by author (reference organized by subject i.e. all dictionaries together). Since I have to double stack my bookshelves, hardcovers would be in the back row and paperbacks in the front. This was especially true for my mystery collection as it is extensive and varied. Series books were in order.

Also since I have so many books and thus bookcases in every single room, certain genres were in one place vs. another. I.e. cookbooks and any fiction/non-fiction that revolved around food were in the eat-in kitchen. Besides sorting out mysteries, food, reference, I had Needlework and Textile, General fiction, feminist/womens history, romance novels, christmas, general non-fiction.

Even though I have a lot of books, the first time I organized them, it took me about 3 days of a few hours a day, with books spread all over the living room in piles. I designated specific bookcases for specific genres and as I would get a hefty pile say of mysteries, I'd start shelving them.

Unless, of course, you live in Southwestern British Columbia where the crocuses are out in February and the trees leaf in March :) Oh the joys of that balmy gulf stream that runs through Georgia Strait.

But in Ottawa there isn't really much of a spring. It almost goes from winter to summer, or did the 4 years I lived there.

message 22: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15574 comments @Meli - on second thought, what you really need is a rum cocktail or two and time spent with Marlon in Jamaica!

message 23: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5763 comments I got an email today to schedule my 1st vaccine dose. I am in the over 65 category. Soonest time was Feb 16 and closest place is on the absolute opposite extreme of the city. The easiest way to get there is to make a big loop of 22 miles on the highway rather than driving through town. Not a problem, I would have gone farther if needed. My husband didn't have any side effects from his first dose, but I have heard that the 2nd is sometimes worse. Still very happy. It might help that we are with the biggest health network in town which is associated with the biggest hospital.

message 26: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12933 comments Joanne! Triple great news! Couldn’t be happier for you on all fronts, but particularly you finding some relief. Although I imagine all three situations will bring some sense of relief, I really meant from the physical pain. But overjoyed to hear all the news.

Nothing so new here. Crazy crazy busy! Trying to stay healthy. Just started the Lions of fifth Avenue, and I have to tell you I love it!

message 27: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Coppens | 599 comments Joanne, great news. Fingers are crossed your procedure gives you some relief.

Not much going on here right now, but my mood is good! We had about 9 inches of snow yesterday then it turned to rain so we are left with only a couple inches. The weather today is warm (well relatively speaking!). Even though winter is not over the light felt different today and I choose to believe spring is on the way. Hubby laughs when I say this - we are in Maine after all!

message 28: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8425 comments Joanne ... will keep you in my thoughts on Friday (and always). Great news re Natalie. And glad to hear Miss Lola is managing.

I made an embarrassing flub this week. Looking up candidates for our Spring primary (which is Feb 16) and diligently took some notes. ... on my absentee ballot! WHAT was I thinking?!?!!!! S*I*G*H I called the village hall and our Village Manager told me to bring it in and she'd give me a brand new clean ballot. I have NEVER done such a thing before!

My doctor's office called today and said they'd signed me up for shot # 1 on March 11 at 3p. I have a lead on another possibility sooner than that, but I won't cancel this appointment until (IF) I get a shot elsewhere. At least I know I have a date certain for a vaccine.

As for the weather. We got slammed last weekend - 12 inches. The roads are pretty much clear now, but there are significant mountains of snow at intersections which make it difficult to see oncoming traffic. And we're expecting another 3-6 inches tomorrow. I made a run to the grocery store today, so we're good for several days.

message 29: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4101 comments Fingers crossed firmly for your op, JoAnne - sending all best hopes for marked pain relief.

Wonderful news about Natalie’s new job - give her my congratulations (though of course she doesn’t know me from Eve but I’m always glad to see super-capable young women growing and developing their careers.) A big shift to leave the media world but she’ll be great. And if you’re relieved she’s moving, I’m sure Natalie is at least twice as relieved!! My boys adore me and vice versa, but I know how much they’d hate living back at home!

It sounds like our first lot of vaccines are due to arrive in the country on schedule at the end of March. Managed quarantine workers and front lines healthcare workers will be first, then the next batches (before end June) will be for elderly folks, or people with risky underlying health conditions. I may qualify (depending on dose availability) but most importantly my mother definitely will, which will mean the whole family can breathe a little easier.

Charlotte, I thought of you with the announcement about Jeff B this morning. All change!

I went to see ‘Promising Young Woman’ last night - brutal but darkly funny and Carey Mulligan is spectacular. Such a good movie.

Amy | 12933 comments BC, mine is 17 hours later! 18 with the time change!

I've been dying to see the movie! Good to hear it's good!

A lot of people are sad at work but they understand. I don't know much about the guy taking over but he's been around awhile.

@Joanne - I'm so happy about your good news! I'll be sending positive thoughts your way for your procedure! I so hope you get some relief!!

message 32: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12593 comments Thank you all for the good thoughts, I believe in the power of positive thinking. With all of you on my side, sure to get some relief!

@Charlotte, I really can't see anything major happening at Amazon, with this shake-up. Bezos isn't leaving, his handprint will still be all over IMO.

@Kate, LoL, yes Natalie is as excited as I am about her moving out. It won't be happening for awhile due to the pandemic and shut-downs, however she has started packing things that are not necessary for day to day living. She has some joy in face now, which is wonderful. Dad is not too happy about it. She is his go to "techie" around here. And believe me, she knows all of you intimately, just from me talking about the group. She is pretty familiar, geographically, with all of you.

Still waiting for vaccination. We are registered in 5 or six places, and just like BC we will take the first one that calls.

message 34: by Sallys (new)

Sallys | 694 comments Ugh! I have not been able to schedule my vaccine appointment yet. It is largely a matter of luck but also perseverance. I have to admit, I have not persevered. I'm so wiped out from teaching that I don't feel like sitting online for hours. Once I almost had an appointment but it disappeared. I'm healthy and under 65 so I'm not that nervous and know that there are people more at risk than me. Part of me just wants to wait till its easily available but I know thats kind of dumb.
Anyway, I just finished teaching and I'm sitting here with a glass of red wine after playing with my dog in the snow so life is good.

Theresa | 15574 comments Update from Joanne - she is home from her procedure and will be resting over the weekend. Her doctor said she should be feeling better in a couple of days. She's reasonably comfortable as they used a topical anesthetic that has yet to wear off.

I'll let her describe - eventually - just how big the needle was and how big the holes in her back are.
