The FIRST 1001-Books Scavenger Hunt, 2021

The 1001-Books Scavenger Hunt for 2021 is ready to rock and roll. There are 12 tasks, and you may start counting from January 1, 2021. The Hunt ends on December 31, 2021. All books chosen for your Scavenger Hunt must come from the Boxall 1001 Books list. (Check the Group's Bookshelf for a listing of all the books on the combined lists.) Have fun!

The 12 Tasks are:
1. In honor of Don Quixote, read a book set BEFORE the advent of windmills (1185).
2. Read a book with an LGBTQ character.
3. Read a book written by an author and set in a country south of the equator.
4. Read a book originally published in a language that doesn’t use the Latin alphabet (e.g., Greek, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, etc.).
5. Read a book with a long title of at least 5 words (language doesn’t matter, but don’t count subtitles).
6. Read a book from the decade in which you were born.
7. Read a book with a reference to animals.
8. Read a book written by an author of color.
9. In honor of Scarlett O’Hara, read a book with a colorful title.
10. Read a book written by an author whose country of birth begins with the letter B.
11. Read a book with a reference to transport.
12. Read a book with a character you find irritating.

Keep track of your progress on the Scavenger Hunt Challenge Plans / Updates

Update: Double-dipping
In order to promote fun and creativity, double-dipping (using one book to fulfill more than one Task) is allowed. However, remember that one of the purposes of the Challenge is to get you to read more Boxall books, improve your total count, and explore the various resources on the Boxall Group site.

Rosemary | 106 comments I am all finished: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

My last one, which has taken me a while to get to, was the book published in the decade in which I was born. I don't know why! There is no reason why that one should be hard, but maybe the 1960s was a better decade for music than for books!

Thank you for setting the scavenger hunt, and I'm looking forward to next year's!

Andrew | 17 comments It's probably intenlty stupid for me to try and start doing this this lte in the year, but without even trying it looks like i've done some of them already. So far:

Read a book with a long title of at least 5 words (language doesn’t matter, but don’t count subtitles): The Old Man and the Sea

Book with a reference to Animals - Moby Dick (Whales...uh, obviously)

That's literally it so far. Have some ideas for the rest, but some are really hard (author from a country beginning with B. Uh, i guess Brazil and Belgium, and that's about it! Unless there's a thriving literary community in Burkina Faso i'm not aware of).

If you check some of the Tasks discussions in this folder (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...), you will find lots of suggestions for each of the tasks.

Such as -- Pallieter by Felix Timmermans is available from Google Books -- Belgian author, set in Belgium
The Home and the World by Rabindranath Tagore -- Bengali author, set in Bengal

Both fairly short!!

And Good Luck!

Thanks for that, it's a huge help. I think i'll go for your suggestion of The Home of the World, but i'm tempted to read Memoirs of Hadrian by Marguerite Yourcenar, for no other reason than i've seen it in my local charity shop recently so it's easy to get!

I read an old novel from Bulgaria for the challenge. It was actually the third novel from Bulgaria I've read. I also read another novel by a Bosnian author (Ivo Andric, a Nobel prize winner).

Put me in the December newsletter too, I've finally finished. I enjoyed reading all of them.

1. In honor of Don Quixote, read a book set BEFORE the advent of windmills (1185). The Arabian Nights/ Tales From a Thousand and One Nights (from about 800)

2. Read a book with an LGBTQ character. The Hours by Michael Cunningham

3. Read a book written by an author and set in a country south of the equator. A Question of Power by Bessie Head of Botswana /S Africa (born in S Africa)

4. Read a book originally published in a language that doesn’t use the Latin alphabet (e.g., Greek, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, etc.). The Daughter by Pavlos Matesis of Greece

5. Read a book with a long title of at least 5 words. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark

6. Read a book from the decade in which you were born. Excellent Women by Barbara Pym, 1952 (the year I was born)

7. Read a book with a reference to animals. Thousand Cranes by Kawabata, Yasunari (Japan)

8. Read a book written by an author of color. The Home and the World/ Ghare-Baire by Rabindranath Tagore (India).

9. In honor of Scarlett O’Hara, read a book with a colorful title. The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga of India

10. Read a book written by an author whose country of birth begins with the letter B. Under the Yoke by Ivan Vazov of Bulgaria

11. Read a book with a reference to transport. The Bridge on the Drina/ or Bridge Over the Drina by Ivo Andric of Bosnia

12. Read a book with a character you find irritating. "Them" by Joyce Carol Oates (a couple of the main characters).

PS: I got some good gender and national diversity- 4 of the 12 authors in my challenge are women, and 8 of 12 are not from US or UK.

I used The Home and the World for my "author of color" (I saw a pic of Tagore and he was rather dark-skinned). I would recommend that over Memoirs of Hadrian; I found that rather dull.

Besides completing the twelve items, I was able to double on now three of them:

Read a book with an LGBTQ character.
The Hours by Michael Cunningham and The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach (will finish the latter one shortly).

Read a book with a long title of at least 5 words
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark and The Story of Gosta Berling by Selma Lagerlof (of Sweden).

Read a book with a reference to animals.
Thousand Cranes by Yasunari Kawabata (of Japan) and The Call of the Wild by Jack London.

I wasn't actually trying to do doubles on any categories, just happened on its own.

Congratulations Dina.
