Popsugar 2021 #32 - A Book Whose Title Starts with Q, X, or Z
It is *highly* recommended that you check the MPE for your titles before you finalize your list. Though it happens rarely, the most popular English language print edition may have a different title than the one on your shelves. I would hate for this to happen to you that would disqualify a read.

And I note the bonus is non-fiction, not not-a-novel so the above collection of short stories would not qualify for +5 but poetry will?

Yes, as to the author. For scorekeeping, we couple the title with the first named author even if an editor.
I'll get back to you on the non-fiction question.

Not-a-novel will be applied as the per book bonus.

Yes. For those the first initial is your key.

Thank you for asking this. Though his family name is Qiu, we will be looking at him as if that is his first name only because that is how he is pubilshed and how we will carry it scorekeeping.
You should consider him for Q.
(I hope he isn't offended.)

Wow that was quick! Thanks for answering.

15.8 g-k The Ghosts of Elkhorn by Kerry Newcomb
15.9 f-b Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver

10. C - E: Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean by Ed Graczyk"
ah...yes....thanks. One of the other books I first had slated in wasn't available....so, I already substituted that one.

10. C - E: Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean by Ed Graczyk"
I just replaced #1 and #10.

1. H - A: Hotel Silence by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir

That'll work!

Got it! Dang...I need more coffee.
Elizabeth, I have corrected 15.8 and 15.9 in my plan (post 5). I think I am OK now.

Sorry, numbers won't work for this sub-challenge.

Looks good, Bea.

Looks good, Bea."
Thanks. If I finish the sub-challenge, I will be reading a bunch of books I have been avoiding. However, I must admit that Covid has had me doing just that, since I own most of them, and I have found books that I have really enjoyed!

Ed, I noticed you have the letter T twice...

Oh Boy! Thanks for catching that Rosemary! Back to the drawing board.

Everyone has a list of interesting books. I've already added some to my over burdened wish list!

I don't see any problems now either!

Thanks Rosemary and Elizabeth!

J - X ?
(as I'm determined to use "X" in this challenge!)

Yes! And well done for being able to use the X!

Does this mean I'm the clear to use? I know some of the Christie's get caught up in the YA category and this one doesn't have a Lexile either.
Thanks!

You're clear to use because we are no longer checking short story collections. But you are also correct that if BPL doesn't shelve a title we don't check the Lexile.

O-K Kindred Octavia E. Butler

The MPE is called The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, but the original title (and the title on the Bloom Canon) is Notre-Dame of Paris. The Bloom Canon matters for this one because it does have a YA BPL shelving and I'm not finding it in Lexile (only seems to be abridged/illustrated/otherwise adapted editions there).
So my question is can this book be used for H-V, or is it really an N-V and therefore not a fit for the sub-challenge?

Hi Bucket, and welcome! Yes, we go by the MPE so that H-V is the correct combination of letters. And that it is on Bloom's Canon means BPL shelving and Lexile is irrelevant.

N-Y Year One (Chronicles of The One, #1) Nora Roberts

The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson
Basically, does "The" count for "T"? Thanks

Yes. You may use leading articles in this game when it works for you.

There are longer descriptions of the book here: The Inimitable Jeeves

Yes. Some of the reviews refer to stories as well.

No, sorry. The MPE is And Then There Were None, but even so it has a Lexile of 570 so can't be used in the sub-challenge.

Does that only apply to receiving Style points or could I use it in the subchallenge despite its below-800 Lexile rating?

In this context, "grandfathered" means it was added to the database before it was shelved as YA/Juv at BPL or has been removed as such (some Christies as to this latter, for example). Once in the database without a Lexile note of any kind it will forever remain. No Lexile score it may have will be attached. The title can be used for both styles and sub-challenges.
Books don't get into the database without someone posting and claiming at some point. The "Hot off the Press" tasks have helped!
I've tried to word this carefully, please note! ;-)
