Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14232 comments Titles that start with X, Y, or Z (has links to lists with other letters)

Popsugar 2021 #32 - A Book Whose Title Starts with Q, X, or Z

It is *highly* recommended that you check the MPE for your titles before you finalize your list. Though it happens rarely, the most popular English language print edition may have a different title than the one on your shelves. I would hate for this to happen to you that would disqualify a read.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14232 comments Bumping this as you wouldn't have gotten a notification of Post #2 Update.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14232 comments For those of you who might choose to do this more than once, you may use an author again in subsequent rounds.

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) | 1174 comments When a book is edited by.... We usually say for tasks it is authored by the person whose name shows up in the field for Goodreads. Like Passages is "by" Mercedes Lackey So would be a P-M pairing (except I already read it...)?

And I note the bonus is non-fiction, not not-a-novel so the above collection of short stories would not qualify for +5 but poetry will?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14232 comments Beth wrote: "When a book is edited by.... We usually say for tasks it is authored by the person whose name shows up in the field for Goodreads. Like Passages is "by" [author:Mercedes Lackey|8685..."

Yes, as to the author. For scorekeeping, we couple the title with the first named author even if an editor.

I'll get back to you on the non-fiction question.

Not-a-novel will be applied as the per book bonus.

Yes. For those the first initial is your key.

Deedee | 2281 comments Is Qiu Xiaolong Q or X??

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14232 comments Deedee wrote: "Is Qiu Xiaolong Q or X??"

Thank you for asking this. Though his family name is Qiu, we will be looking at him as if that is his first name only because that is how he is pubilshed and how we will carry it scorekeeping.

You should consider him for Q.

(I hope he isn't offended.)

Wow that was quick! Thanks for answering.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14232 comments Ed: This doesn't work.

10. C - E: Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean by Ed Graczyk

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14232 comments Bea. These two don't work.

15.8 g-k The Ghosts of Elkhorn by Kerry Newcomb
15.9 f-b Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver

I just replaced #1 and #10.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14232 comments You fixed #10, but now this won't work. (But it's very good, so find a place for it somewhere sometime!)

1. H - A: Hotel Silence by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir

message 18: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Ahhhhh...how could I make the same mistake! LOL...Thanks for checking...and the recommendation to read Hotel Silence.

Got it! Dang...I need more coffee.

Elizabeth, I have corrected 15.8 and 15.9 in my plan (post 5). I think I am OK now.

Thanks. If I finish the sub-challenge, I will be reading a bunch of books I have been avoiding. However, I must admit that Covid has had me doing just that, since I own most of them, and I have found books that I have really enjoyed!

Yes! And well done for being able to use the X!

message 35: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 574 comments I don't see a listing for The Underdog and Other Stories at BPL.

Does this mean I'm the clear to use? I know some of the Christie's get caught up in the YA category and this one doesn't have a Lexile either.

Thanks!

You're clear to use because we are no longer checking short story collections. But you are also correct that if BPL doesn't shelve a title we don't check the Lexile.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14232 comments Kim, this won't work because Kindred is a YA Assignment at BPL and has a Lexile of 580.

O-K Kindred Octavia E. Butler

message 38: by Bucket (new)

Bucket | 304 comments Hi there, I'm a longtime lurker planning to join in the challenge for the first time in the Spring. I want to use The Hunchback of Notre-Dame for H-V for this sub-challenge and would like to clarify that I'm handling it correctly.

The MPE is called The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, but the original title (and the title on the Bloom Canon) is Notre-Dame of Paris. The Bloom Canon matters for this one because it does have a YA BPL shelving and I'm not finding it in Lexile (only seems to be abridged/illustrated/otherwise adapted editions there).

So my question is can this book be used for H-V, or is it really an N-V and therefore not a fit for the sub-challenge?

Hi Bucket, and welcome! Yes, we go by the MPE so that H-V is the correct combination of letters. And that it is on Bloom's Canon means BPL shelving and Lexile is irrelevant.

message 40: by Bucket (new)

Bucket | 304 comments Great, thank you!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14232 comments Kim, sorry I didn't catch this when I was looking earlier. Both these letters are in the same half of the alphabet.

N-Y Year One (Chronicles of The One, #1) Nora Roberts

Yes. You may use leading articles in this game when it works for you.

Yes. Some of the reviews refer to stories as well.

No, sorry. The MPE is And Then There Were None, but even so it has a Lexile of 570 so can't be used in the sub-challenge.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2595 comments okay, thank you. I will find something else.

message 49: by Anika (new)

Anika | 2796 comments I saw in the Completed Posts thread that One of Us Is Lying was grandfathered in re: Lexile.
Does that only apply to receiving Style points or could I use it in the subchallenge despite its below-800 Lexile rating?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14232 comments Anika wrote: "I saw in the Completed Posts thread that One of Us Is Lying was grandfathered in re: Lexile.

In this context, "grandfathered" means it was added to the database before it was shelved as YA/Juv at BPL or has been removed as such (some Christies as to this latter, for example). Once in the database without a Lexile note of any kind it will forever remain. No Lexile score it may have will be attached. The title can be used for both styles and sub-challenges.

Books don't get into the database without someone posting and claiming at some point. The "Hot off the Press" tasks have helped!

I've tried to word this carefully, please note! ;-)
