My trick for that is this: The format of a linked book is [book:<title>|<number>], and it's the same information if you want show the cover, which is [bookcover:<title>|<number>], so I copy the text out of the comment box and paste it into a text editor and search and replace 'book' with 'bookcover', and paste that as a separate section. Covers sorted out for linked books in seconds!
