(My rating of The Fold was also 3 stars - for me, also a passing grade meaning I don't regret that I read it.)

It does set up The Fold in terms of what some readers (especially on the podcast) seemed to think of as an out of nowhere twist late in the book. Reading 14 first, you know that something like that is coming (and why), apart from the separate mystery of what is happening with the rings in The Fold.

It was predictable even without having read 14.
The twist was predictable. The change in genre wasn't, unless you read 14.
Reading 14 wasn't required to enjoy The Fold, but there are a few nice call backs.

I'm curious though, where are the "male-gazey" comments coming from? I'm not arguing, just interested in hearing another opinion.

I was referring to Jenny's comments in this other thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
After a conversation I had in Instagram with a former student, I think I could be persuaded to read other books in this series in a certain mood. This one was a solid 3 stars for me which is a good, not perfect, passing grade.
A: Have you read 14 by him? I wonder if it feels less sloggy if you have. Even though you don't have to read them in order, I think there was enough overlap in the building blocks of the adventure part that help with that. More excitement in waiting doe the characters to realize what you know or at least suspect. I also did all 4 books on audio (the last 2 are Audible only). Ray Porter narrates them and he's my absolute favorite narrator!
Me: No but I'm guessing the (view spoiler)[ woman who shows up at the end of this one must be that story?
A: Yes! I actually like that one better than The Fold. The roaches are a clue from that one as well. (hide spoiler)]
Me: interesting! Do they work together in book 3?
A: They kind of do in book 4. Book 3 is a big jump into the future and is basically a zombie book on the moon. With the same monsters. It's really fun!
Me: Woah
