✨Emily (emilouie014) | 176 comments I think I’m gonna be taking a bit longer to get through this cause it’s not really gripping me so far

Alex (The Scribe Owl) | 249 comments Don't hate me, but I just finished the book. It was...interesting. It was a sincere and well-intended idea, but the execution just ended up falling flat. I'm tired and I don't know if I can word it right again, but here's my review 😂 :

✨Emily (emilouie014) | 176 comments Hahaha no worries at least I can take my time with the book.

Speaking of execution, I've loved the discussions the author includes in his book but in this one it leans on the heavy-handedness of highlighting those themes of diversity and equality that it feels really forced. Which is why I'm having a hard time getting into it. I'm about 25% in and it's pretty flat for me because I loved all his pervious works.

✨Emily (emilouie014) | 176 comments Just read your review and I'm kinda nervous cause I love Scythe and Unwind.... tbh his writing is a bit different in a sense that the messages are being shoved down your throat than being blended with the narrative.

✨Emily (emilouie014) | 176 comments So it’s kinda weird seeing Covid in a book especially since this is fiction. Also the whole discussion on racism in the US is really heavy handed in a sense that the main character really wants to be a decent guy who is not discriminatory but sometimes his thoughts seem really performative. I swear the messages are just being slapped on my face that it feels like I’m getting a race and privilege in America lecture and I don’t even live there. I’m really hoping that we’ll get more sci-fi components soon.

Alex (The Scribe Owl) | 249 comments Yes! I actually really enjoyed the sci-fi elements of the story and I loved seeing all the alternate realities (especially the last couple), but the messages are annoying. I really don't need that right now.

✨Emily (emilouie014) | 176 comments Okay don’t hate me but I think I might just DNF it for now and come back to it in the future 🙈 I just don’t want to get into a reading slump and I feel like this book might get me into one.

Alex (The Scribe Owl) | 249 comments That's okay! I totally get that. There were some good elements at the end, but I had to slog through a LOT to get to them.
