Frances Carden | 60 comments I was only going to do the one (I picked the other book), but I love stories set in the isolated Artic (The Thing, anyone) . . . so now I'm going to read this too.

Zain | 340 comments Definitely the kind of action-adventure-Scifi-horror book that I like.

There is a Buddy Reads section here on HA and you can join the ones going on or set up your own :)

Netanella | 573 comments I'm stoked for this book, since I just finished reading Dark Matter and Who Goes There?, and spent the weekend watching "The Thing from Another Planet" and "Horror Express" (the last one is set on a train, but hey...Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Telly Savalas?)

Horror Express is such an entertaining movie!

"He knows that a horse has four legs. He knows that a murderer has two arms. But still, the Devil must be afraid of one honest Cossack."

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) I just wanted to say I nominated this book after I read and reviewed it. I won't say anything else about it but I hope everyone who decides to read Colony enjoys it as much as I did.

Mr Chuck (mrchuck) Just started last night and already stayed up an extra hour as wanted to read more. So far really enjoying it.

message 25: by Netanella (last edited Mar 04, 2021 06:10PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Netanella | 573 comments I started this evening. I loved the scene with the Russian guards.

Looking forward to more.

Luvtoread (Trying to catch up) | 1944 comments Do you need to read the previous book first or can I start with this book? Thanks

message 27: by Netanella (last edited Mar 06, 2021 10:28AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Netanella | 573 comments There isn't a previous book that I know of. This is a stand alone. If you're referring to the book being Group Read #2, that's because there's a Group Read #1 for an unrelated horror book, The Haunted Forest Tour. That book is humorous and full of crazy, bloody monsters in a madcap tour of forest.

This one is set in the arctic, with an international team of scientists on a 2-month impact-study. There's an ice mummy and some type of cryptid, I believe. I'm up to Chapter 6 so far, and I have 'seen' any cryptids yet. There's been a few bloody mutilations, but no big reveal yet.

It's feeling a little congested up in the Arctic freeze, actually.

Luvtoread (Trying to catch up) | 1944 comments Thank you much, Netanella! This book sounds very intriguing!! :-)

Netanella | 573 comments Chapter 11

(view spoiler)

Chandler | 255 comments I'm only a few chapters in but already intrigued! It feels like it'll be an action-packed horror/thriller, like Jurassic Park.

Trustno1 (carosabotage) | 58 comments Just finished, I really liked the archeology and creature parts.
They had some really cool unique tricks up their sleeves.
But I must say I wasn't too impressed with the rest of the plot.

Frances Carden | 60 comments I'm 36% in so far, and I just cannot get into it. It seems a little slow, a little technical in parts. Characters are hard to differentiate and I don't feel a sense of isolation.

Jason | 486 comments I'm really struggling to get into this also, on pg 35 keep picking up and putting down straight away, just not grabbing me.

Jason | 486 comments Started a week ago and only 35 pages down.

message 35: by M.E. (last edited Mar 15, 2021 04:35AM) (new) - rated it 1 star

M.E. | 409 comments I gave up on it after 21 pages. I just couldn't take the abuse of wildly inaccurate adjectives ("...smoke tripped from his nostrils...", "...the freezing air congealed..."), and ultimately gave up after combat hardened, "elite" soldiers couldn't handle seeing a severely injured soldier, panic fire at a shadow in the distance and keep their triggers depressed after their magazines are empty.

Something in the writing would slap me out of the story every few paragraphs. This needs someone with a lot more patience than I have.

Mr Chuck (mrchuck) Just finished. I personally really like it and did a review if anyone wants to read it.

Frances Carden | 60 comments Time is ticking and I really need to get a move on with this one. I'm still just not that into it, although I don't dislike it either. I like the creatures, but something about the human characters is just flat. I have so much trouble remembering them and distinguishing the scientists.

***spoiler warning below***

I just got to the point where we finally meet and really interact with the creatures and the submarine catches one.

Like several others, I gave up on this one. It didn't hold my interest and I have so many other books to read. No rating from me because I didn't finish it.

Chandler | 255 comments I'm over halfway through and I'm struggling with it. There's some good action scenes interspersed but it's overall so slow. I have about 150ish pages left and I'm debating not finishing it. Life's just too short. I'll sit down with it one more time because I made it this far but it's on thin ice (no pun intended).

message 40: by Kara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) I want to comment to those struggling with Colony. Keep at it, the action picks up in the second half of the book. Just keep going.

Chandler | 255 comments I ended up finishing it. It did pick up in the those last pages. It felt a little too late but it did pick up. I just wish it was more consistent throughout.

Frances Carden | 60 comments I'm about half way through. I don't like the military characters. they are so unrealistic.

Amanda | 96 comments I finished reading this book last week. I typically really enjoy these type of books but I struggled a little getting into this one. The story plot was good but I felt that most of the action was at the very end of the book. This book was just average for me but I'm still glad that I read it.
