Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) | 131 comments First published in 1965, this is the beginning of the Martin Beck series, by Swedish crime writing duo Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo. I am a long time fan of Nordic Noir, and I've been really interested in this series for several years, so I'm excited to get started on this one. Big thanks to Jazzy for suggesting it as one of our yearly reads!

My library conveniently had a copy, so I downloaded it today & will get started very soon!

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) I was a naughty girl and read it a couple of weeks ago. Wow, you'll love it i think!

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) I have the complete set of these, there are ten altogether and the spines spell out the name of the detective

MARTIN BECK

Kathy E | 2349 comments Lovely books, Jazzy!

I was so engrossed in the book that I finished last night. I thought it was perfectly amazing. I have never been able to analyze writing styles, but I liked this one. One line after another building suspense. I "know" Roseanna from the evidence of the case.

That's not a picture of mine but mine are just the same. I was at a charity shop and saw them, and said Must have them!! I bought the lot and the guy said he had just put them out!

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) Kathy and Trisha i'm so glad you're both loving it! I love those Scandinavian TV shows, this reminds me a lot of one of those.

Tr1sha | 1043 comments I finished reading this today. Although a few parts of it seemed quite slow initially, I liked the way the story developed & the tension increased.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) You're on a roll Trisha! 😎

Wow! I love this kind of collections! Beautiful!

Karin | 681 comments I received an email today and this is at my library waiting for me. However, now that I actually have a bit of a schedule again, I'll be picking it up on Monday.

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... | 164 comments My library has the audiobook! I will definitely join in.

Valentina Di Nisio (ntina) | 8 comments I finished today the book of this month. In hot blood, I don't know if I really liked it (4*) or just liked it (3*). So I'll stay in the middle.
I agree with Trisha on the slowness of the initial part, even if to me this sensation continued until the 3/4 of the book. The last chapters were the most enthusiastic.
I have to say also, that the style of the authors is really fluent and natural, which gives you the opportunity to read indefinitely, without feeling the pages passing through.

Karin | 681 comments I have the book, but am going to finish a couple of others I'm already reading first.

Mikiko (mikikoschot) | 52 comments I've watched the series on tv (season 8 just started in the Netherlands) but have never read any of the books, don't know why even though I do read other Scandinavian writers.
No better place and time to start than here 😁

My husband, who's more of an action film kind of guy, finds Scandinavian series slow in the beginning but suspenseful in the end and is now on a Netflix binge with them haha.

Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) | 131 comments I started this last night. I'm not very far into the book, only 17%, but I'm intrigued. It seems to have quite a modern feel, although it was first published in 1965. My edition has a foreward by Henning Mankell, who is a long time favorite Nordic Noir author of mine.

Is it on Netflix? I didn't see it. But i love Scandi noir.

Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) | 131 comments Oh, my, the miscommunication between Beck and (view spoiler) was hilarious.

Also, I really loved the detail about trying to identify the victim. The slog that is boots-on-the-ground police work was really well done.

no, on a regular station. Only season1 is on Netflix here in NL.

message 23: by Mikiko (new)

Mikiko (mikikoschot) | 52 comments Finished this afternoon and will probably read the others later this year.
Even though it's not my favourite genre, I do enjoy a suspenseful story, especially with good old 'boots-on-the-ground' detective work as Christine puts it.

I will also make a point of finding the rest of the books in the series, but I have no idea when that will happen. My TBR list exceeds my probable life span by orders of magnitude. I need to figure out immortality in order to read all of the books I want to read!

message 26: by Karin (new)

Karin | 681 comments I started this last night and read in between 1/4 and 1/3.

message 27: by Karin (new)

Karin | 681 comments I finished this last night, but am not sure if I'll write the review today, tomorrow or Monday since I have to drive my son to the city so he can help a friend with a recording for his friend's recital (in turn, he has friends who will be part of his). This would be okay if everything were open and I could hang out where I take voice lessons, but it's not.

Ideally by September things will be open again thanks to the vaccines.
