Off Topic: Baseball and Exercise

I think once regular season comes I'm going to try and join with my usual team.

I just requested to join on FB- (Jen Kennedy) and need to support my Nationals. They used to be up north with me, Vermont was the feeder team for the Expos, and now we are together again in DC. :)

Let's see if I can figure something out.

**Checked it out and I was confused where to comment on the Facebook page, as it had last year and this year, but please add MN Twins and I will decide what challenge to do.

I don't do a huge amount, Theresa, but it helps. Like you, I would rather just sit on the couch and read. :-) I am actually trying to increase the amount I do (this is my second time doing it) for each run, even.
I have a (manual) treadmill. Last year I did 100 steps/run. This year, I'm going to aim for 150. I (some? most? days) kept up even when baseball wasn't going. But I did slack off after some holidays, so I had to start small again and work my way up. Even with the 100/run (or 150/run), I have a minimum.
But, I tend to only do it on days when I don't leave the house. At least that's what I was doing when no baseball.

Makes sense. My profession is one where I am chained to a desk mostly. That has not changed. But pre-pandemic, there was commuting which was an incredibly easy way to incorporate exercise and movement and had me outside almost everyday. I could get off tbe bus or subway a couple stops early to add more walking. There were lots of stairs in and out of buildings and subways. That all stopped the 3rd week of March 2020 unless I was out for a walk and most of those had me sitting on a park bench working.

Yeah, I take transit, as well, so it makes a difference for me, too. Probably not as many stairs as you have, but I do have some at one end of my trip.
I do listen to an audio book while I'm on my treadmill, which helps. I'm certain I wouldn't bother at all without that audio book!

I'm doing essentially a block at a time for each run - some are internal in my building, some outside. A block is roughly 1/5th of a mile I don't necessarily do them all the time, I'm generally not breaking a sweat - yet. I've only been doing this since Wed. but I already can see an improvement in my stamina and breathing as I walked partway back from Sunday in the Park with Bloody Marys.
I encourage those who like me hate exercise or don't have the knees or whatever for treadmills or running or peletons to join because even with modest goals, you will see improvement.

Awww, thank you so much, Joanne! I'm so glad it has helped in some small way!!!
And, I'm glad you also have enjoyed it, Theresa!
It's fun to share two of my passions (running/baseball) with my friends who share my third passion (reading)!

Lol, you really don't need to know anything about baseball to participate. We can just give you a team to follow, and then when they score a run, you do something of your choice (I suggest walk 10 minutes if that's your thing). Teams generally score anywhere from 0 to 10 runs. Occasionally they score more and that's the challenging part. The median is 4 runs, so on average you'd be walking 40 minutes. If that seems like too much, you could make 1 run = 5 minutes of walking. Or 1 run = 1 kilometer.

I just feel it's more motivating if I know the teams."
I truly don't follow sports and chose the team my father liked - the St. Louis Cardinals, because he liked the bird, seriously.
I don't follow but of course know the game having attended some and grown up with it.

They play almost daily. And yay for the one and only Canadian team! (Which is, of course, the one I'm doing.)

The trouble with this challenge and picking the team you want to do well, though, is if they are doing well, then you have more exercise to do! (Well, maybe some like that...! LOL!)

Or you can be like me and stick with the Home Team (Detroit) who always come out swinging, but by June are big ZEROS

Not if your team gets a lot of wins in low run games...

We all so far over on FB only talk about or whine about how much our team is making us all move!
Come join!

Which is likely WHY Miss Joanne waits until full season to start her 'workouts with the Tigers'.

I need to exercise more regardless of baseball season, which is why I tried to keep up (somewhat) even when there was no baseball.
And now even more so, with the prediabetes, I should be exercising more, anyway. Sigh... (I hate exercising - I would rather be a slug or a lump with a book in my hand on the comfortable couch!)

And I've seen what walking can do, my dad was overweight for a long time, but then got a malamut/ border collie mix a couple of years ago. Boy does that dog love walking. And he's lost like 20 kg I think (that's maybe 25-30 pounds can't be bothered to look it up).

You are in! But the Blue Jays didn't play yesterday, so you have a day off.
I should let you know that right now is spring training, so it's really more of warm up for the real deal. The regular season starts in April and some people wait until then to start. The scores seem to be trending a bit higher in spring training than you would usually see.
You actually picked a great up and coming team to follow. Lots of young players with tons of talent, but not so much experience.
Walking is such a great way to exercise . . .I hope you have fun with us! I like to run only because of the efficiency, but I find walking to be so enjoyable, especially with my dog. And anyone can do it, and you only need shoes for equipment.

So when a home run occurs, a single player hits the ball so hard and far, that he can run around all FOUR bases at one time.
Runs are whenever any player scores. So a typical player might get on first base when it is their turn. Then, subsequent players try to move that first player around the bases until that player returns to home plate. When the first player arrives at the home plate, a run is scored. The subsequent players may also score if players after them are able to move them around the bases by hitting the ball well and hard.
I know what you mean about motivation, but last year, the US baseball season was VERY delayed because of the pandemic. We ended up starting with Korean baseball teams which started the season considerably earlier. After a month, I was rooting hard for my Korean team lol!!

For exercise, I am actually stronger than anyone in my life believes. I have been doing twice a week workouts for over a year at the Exercise Coach in Welleseley, and they like my competitive spirit. I like it when a good looking guy tells me I look and am doing great! I have been really working on my diet these last months, but its a painstaking process. Once in a while I get an exercise class in. I am indeed looking forward to swimming laps in summer, and biking in Spring, and a lot of walking.

I'll start off with walking, and then when the proper season starts I may do something harder. We'll see.

My husband and I had season tickets to the Rays when we lived in FL and are looking forward to going to Mariners games when we are able to again.
My issue is I'm not the best of sticking with things so I hope I stick with it throughout the season... I hope I can with everyone's excitement.

And Anita gave you more info about the Jays than I knew! I learned, as well. :-) Although, I'm sure (if I'd asked) my dad could have told me all about them - as well as other friends who like baseball. The Jays being the only Canadian team (now) are well-supported across the country. :-)

Yes! I'm also Team Nats and there were 9 runs yesterday!
Spring training starts today, so we are getting organized on Facebook, and of course, anyone is welcome.

I personally have put on a few pounds with last year's abbreviated sports season and extra eating and drinking while locked down, so anxious to get going!
