Anita Pomerantz | 9288 comments Many of you already know this, but every year for baseball season, I run a mile for every run that the Yankees score. Over the years, many PBT members have joined me with their own fitness challenges and their own favorite teams. Some people bike, others do stairwells, some swim laps, but in each case, they tie their workouts to their teams' fortunes.

Spring training starts today, so we are getting organized on Facebook, and of course, anyone is welcome.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/mlbmoves

I personally have put on a few pounds with last year's abbreviated sports season and extra eating and drinking while locked down, so anxious to get going!

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I'm so busy right now, I want to commit- but just am in limbo.

I think once regular season comes I'm going to try and join with my usual team.

Charlotte | 1701 comments I'm in and can't wait but I already said that on FB. Yay! Go RAYS!!! Hopefully we have another amazing year!

Jen K | 3143 comments I might try to join in on this! I just got a treadmill and will need some motivation.

I just requested to join on FB- (Jen Kennedy) and need to support my Nationals. They used to be up north with me, Vermont was the feeder team for the Expos, and now we are together again in DC. :)

message 6: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9233 comments It sounds great, but I rarely go on FB now and am just starting back after having some ankle trouble so my goals would be embarrassingly low right now.

message 7: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12933 comments I haven't quite figured out yet what I am doing for the runs. It used to be 100 sit-ups, butt tucks, or leg lifts. I think I could also add in 20 minutes of tabata intervals. Just took a class on Sunday and it was great. They told me to get the app..... But I haven't been on FB in three days....

message 8: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15574 comments Hmmm...I really need to do this given my pre-existing tendency to be an inactive slug has worsened with no longer having to physically leave my apartment to go to work, no longer having any non-virtual social or cultural events, coupled with working long hours at a desk. New Yorkers in non-pandemic times walk a lot in the normal course of a day.

Let's see if I can figure something out.

message 9: by Theresa (last edited Mar 03, 2021 02:44PM) (new)

Theresa | 15574 comments OK. I signed up! My goal is more about adding more movement to my days and improving stamina than increasing exercise or losing weight or gaining muscle tone. Those will follow but for now, becoming less sedentary is the goal.

message 10: by Robin P (last edited Mar 03, 2021 08:37AM) (new)

Robin P | 5763 comments I would like to do this, although the last full season (2019), my MN Twins had the record number of home runs and a lot of high scoring games. I have been doing Jazzercise at home 2-3 times a week but I know I don't work as hard as in person. And weather has been too cold and snowy to walk outside until just recently. I have not weighed myself since some time last year and ever since the original shutdown, told myself, "Oh well, I am home so much, why not bake/cook/eat/have treats?" I will check out the Facebook link.

**Checked it out and I was confused where to comment on the Facebook page, as it had last year and this year, but please add MN Twins and I will decide what challenge to do.

I don't do a huge amount, Theresa, but it helps. Like you, I would rather just sit on the couch and read. :-) I am actually trying to increase the amount I do (this is my second time doing it) for each run, even.

I have a (manual) treadmill. Last year I did 100 steps/run. This year, I'm going to aim for 150. I (some? most? days) kept up even when baseball wasn't going. But I did slack off after some holidays, so I had to start small again and work my way up. Even with the 100/run (or 150/run), I have a minimum.

But, I tend to only do it on days when I don't leave the house. At least that's what I was doing when no baseball.

Makes sense. My profession is one where I am chained to a desk mostly. That has not changed. But pre-pandemic, there was commuting which was an incredibly easy way to incorporate exercise and movement and had me outside almost everyday. I could get off tbe bus or subway a couple stops early to add more walking. There were lots of stairs in and out of buildings and subways. That all stopped the 3rd week of March 2020 unless I was out for a walk and most of those had me sitting on a park bench working.

Yeah, I take transit, as well, so it makes a difference for me, too. Probably not as many stairs as you have, but I do have some at one end of my trip.

I do listen to an audio book while I'm on my treadmill, which helps. I'm certain I wouldn't bother at all without that audio book!

message 14: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8425 comments As I did last year ... I'm going to go for a flight a stairs for each run. These are flights of stairs going UP and I don't count any that I do in the normal course of the day (e.g. I leave my computer to go downstairs to have dinner and then back up again to the office ... that doesn't count). I only count flights that I do for the specific purpose of getting moving. Think I'll go make a trip to the basement and back to get two flights in....

message 15: by Theresa (last edited Mar 07, 2021 04:31PM) (new)

Theresa | 15574 comments Just want to mention how glad I am that I joined in on this. My goal is just about increasing movement, stamina and getting out of my chair and out of the apartment given my extremely sedentary profession. Not having the commuting factor - which for me involves walking and stairs between subway and bus - has really turned me into 100% slug.

I'm doing essentially a block at a time for each run - some are internal in my building, some outside. A block is roughly 1/5th of a mile I don't necessarily do them all the time, I'm generally not breaking a sweat - yet. I've only been doing this since Wed. but I already can see an improvement in my stamina and breathing as I walked partway back from Sunday in the Park with Bloody Marys.

I encourage those who like me hate exercise or don't have the knees or whatever for treadmills or running or peletons to join because even with modest goals, you will see improvement.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12593 comments Yes, to everything Theresa said. For me, it is just about moving too. 2 years ago (last year was a dud, eh?) I started and although I have no high expectations (of myself, or my chosen team-LoL) any type of movement is what is important for me. If I do not keep my spare parts limber, I suffer. This group of Anita's has helped me so much and I thank her from the bottom of my heart

message 17: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5763 comments I think I will do one block per run. I have a lot of nice places to walk near me. I will start when the season starts, I'll be able to get the scores daily myself.

Awww, thank you so much, Joanne! I'm so glad it has helped in some small way!!!

And, I'm glad you also have enjoyed it, Theresa!

It's fun to share two of my passions (running/baseball) with my friends who share my third passion (reading)!

message 19: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9233 comments Thanks, Anita! While I haven't joined, it got me walking again; I'd stopped due to an ankle situation that took a couple of months to get over to the point where exercise didn't get it to flare up.

message 20: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12933 comments I'm excited to get started. Reading is such a sedentary sport!

message 21: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments I love this idea. But living in Europe I'm an absolute baseball illiterate. Maybe I'll think of something else, like every time my two favourite football (soccer) teams score a goal I'll walk for an hour. Walking is honestly the only exercise I get atm. Like Theresa, I live in a city where walking and riding bikes is how you get around. When I'm not working from home I ride my bike 12 km (7.5 miles) every working day. Plus I walk a lot at work. I can really feel I don't get that daily, natural exercise.

Lol, you really don't need to know anything about baseball to participate. We can just give you a team to follow, and then when they score a run, you do something of your choice (I suggest walk 10 minutes if that's your thing). Teams generally score anywhere from 0 to 10 runs. Occasionally they score more and that's the challenging part. The median is 4 runs, so on average you'd be walking 40 minutes. If that seems like too much, you could make 1 run = 5 minutes of walking. Or 1 run = 1 kilometer.

I truly don't follow sports and chose the team my father liked - the St. Louis Cardinals, because he liked the bird, seriously.

I don't follow but of course know the game having attended some and grown up with it.

They play almost daily. And yay for the one and only Canadian team! (Which is, of course, the one I'm doing.)

message 30: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11702 comments And I don't even really follow baseball, but I do (in my mind) always hope well for the Jays!

The trouble with this challenge and picking the team you want to do well, though, is if they are doing well, then you have more exercise to do! (Well, maybe some like that...! LOL!)

Not if your team gets a lot of wins in low run games...

Which is likely WHY Miss Joanne waits until full season to start her 'workouts with the Tigers'.

I need to exercise more regardless of baseball season, which is why I tried to keep up (somewhat) even when there was no baseball.

And now even more so, with the prediabetes, I should be exercising more, anyway. Sigh... (I hate exercising - I would rather be a slug or a lump with a book in my hand on the comfortable couch!)

message 38: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments That's why I've discovered walking, it's not hard like regular exercise and you can listen to an audiobook. Well I sometimes walk with family members, but I like them as well :) Win!
And I've seen what walking can do, my dad was overweight for a long time, but then got a malamut/ border collie mix a couple of years ago. Boy does that dog love walking. And he's lost like 20 kg I think (that's maybe 25-30 pounds can't be bothered to look it up).

message 39: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments As for building body strength that will have to wait a bit since I'm lazy (also fitness centres are closed). I have a colleague who does a short yoga session with us after our twice weekly online check-in meeting.

You are in! But the Blue Jays didn't play yesterday, so you have a day off.

I should let you know that right now is spring training, so it's really more of warm up for the real deal. The regular season starts in April and some people wait until then to start. The scores seem to be trending a bit higher in spring training than you would usually see.

You actually picked a great up and coming team to follow. Lots of young players with tons of talent, but not so much experience.

Walking is such a great way to exercise . . .I hope you have fun with us! I like to run only because of the efficiency, but I find walking to be so enjoyable, especially with my dog. And anyone can do it, and you only need shoes for equipment.

Anita Pomerantz | 9288 comments Johanne wrote: "and I guess a run is a homerun?

So when a home run occurs, a single player hits the ball so hard and far, that he can run around all FOUR bases at one time.

Runs are whenever any player scores. So a typical player might get on first base when it is their turn. Then, subsequent players try to move that first player around the bases until that player returns to home plate. When the first player arrives at the home plate, a run is scored. The subsequent players may also score if players after them are able to move them around the bases by hitting the ball well and hard.

I know what you mean about motivation, but last year, the US baseball season was VERY delayed because of the pandemic. We ended up starting with Korean baseball teams which started the season considerably earlier. After a month, I was rooting hard for my Korean team lol!!

message 43: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12933 comments I must be alone with my beloved Red Sox. I swear I knew nothing about Sports before birthing these three sports enthusiasts. Now its all sports all the time. Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox, and Bruins.

For exercise, I am actually stronger than anyone in my life believes. I have been doing twice a week workouts for over a year at the Exercise Coach in Welleseley, and they like my competitive spirit. I like it when a good looking guy tells me I look and am doing great! I have been really working on my diet these last months, but its a painstaking process. Once in a while I get an exercise class in. I am indeed looking forward to swimming laps in summer, and biking in Spring, and a lot of walking.

message 44: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments Thanks for explaining that. I'm already feeling the connection with my Canadian team :)

I'll start off with walking, and then when the proper season starts I may do something harder. We'll see.

Charlotte | 1701 comments I'm a HUGE baseball fan, so this is right up my alley! I was looking forward to it this year because I've really been struggling with motivation.

My husband and I had season tickets to the Rays when we lived in FL and are looking forward to going to Mariners games when we are able to again.

My issue is I'm not the best of sticking with things so I hope I stick with it throughout the season... I hope I can with everyone's excitement.

And Anita gave you more info about the Jays than I knew! I learned, as well. :-) Although, I'm sure (if I'd asked) my dad could have told me all about them - as well as other friends who like baseball. The Jays being the only Canadian team (now) are well-supported across the country. :-)
